January 1990 Day-By-Day Summary

 January 2

Tom arrives with Casey, Lyla, and Duke at Susan's lab; Casey begins his job. Tom speaks with Emily about her engagement and the court case later that day. Tom gives his opening statement regarding the letters and lies told during Paul's trial of James Stenbeck's murder. The judge does the questioning in this perjury case. The judge hands down a fair sentence.

   

January 3

January 4

Finley calls Tom at home while he and Margo are lounging, drinking wine. Finley informs Tom about Brock being a traitor and possibly turning state's evidence and eliminating Emily, Ellie, and Brock if he suspects his son turning on him. Emily's phone is tapped. Tom gets a busy signal when calling Emily at home; the tap is being placed at this time. Lien and Duke walk in on Tom and Margo kissing. Tom distracted trying to find Emily. Duke (speaking to Tom) discusses Casey fighting the odds. Margo and Lien bring out a huge birthday cake for a surprise Duke. Bob and Kim drop by. Tom places an anonymous phone call by disguising his voice to Brock at the Mona Lisa warning him to check the phones before using them. Tom tells Duke to bring Lien home from The Cellar, at a decent hour. Margo answers the phone when Washington, DC calls for Tom. Bob and Kim leave. Tom returns the call to Hopkins in DC, in order to get permission from Joe to offer Brock a deal.

January 9

Margo just showered, (in between kisses) takes Tom up on his offer to join him in his shower. Frannie and Sean stop by to join Tom and Margo at the Mona Lisa for dinner. Over wine, they discuss Andy. Tom gets a phone call from Finley, for an update on Joe Bailey. Finley is worried he is being made and Emily is in danger. Margo tries to listen in. Tom and Margo catch some alone time before heading to the Mona Lisa. Tom checks in with DC before heading out to see if Joe checked in. Margo overhears that lives are hanging in the balance. Margo and Tom arrive at the Mona Lisa. Frannie asks Margo to help track down HeyYou. Frannie suggests his running has to do with Brock. Tom puts a stop to that idea quickly. Margo and Tom dance. Margo questions Tom about Brock, HeyYou, and Joe. Tom is let off guard in answering that for a bit while Lyla sings, "I Remember You When" and dedicates it to a very special person. Tom receives a phone call at the Mona Lisa, from Finley. Finley feels he is being tailed. Tom places an anonymous phone call to Brock, telling him not to let Emily out of his sight tomorrow.

January 12

Tom meets Joe and Mac in his office to discuss Brock. Tom calls Emily to invite her and Brock to dinner at his house to get better acquainted with Brock. Tom calls Brock to get an answer from him about meeting for drinks with him and Margo. This is a cover for Tom to discuss a deal with Brock. Brock changes the place to his suite at 7pm and Ellie is to join them. Finley calls Tom to let him know he will be at Emily's to watch over her cause he knows she is like family to Tom.


January 15

Tom receives a call from Hal looking for Margo cause Emily called the station and left Hal hanging on an open line. Hal heard a gun shot. Neighbors called the station indicating they heard more than one gun shot. Tom asks Hal to call back once the squad car reports in. Tom tells Hal he won't be there, he and Mac will be off doing something but Joe Bailey will. Tom and Mac arrive at Brock's to find Ellie and Caleb there along with Brock's dead body. Tom oversees the police investigation of the crime scene. Tom questions Ellie and learns Brock was going to turn state's evidence. Tom tells Ellie and Caleb about what happened at Emily's place. Tom tries Emily's and speaks to Joe. Joe tells Tom about Pryor's death and Finley's gun shot wound. Tom tells Joe what happened at Brock's suite. Tom calls Margo and asks her to come to Brock's.

   

January 16

Margo now understands what Tom was dealing with this past couple of weeks. Joe fill Margo in on the details of what was going on. Joe, Tom, and Margo question Ellie, Caleb, and Emily. Tom calls the Lake Forest Lombard residence, looking for Philip Lombard to tell him his son is dead. Margo calls John for an update on Finley and tells him Brock was murdered. Hal, Joe, Mac, Tom, and Margo sit around discussing theories and facts of the case. Joe and Mac head to the hospital as Margo, Tom, and Hal further discuss Ellie and Emily's involvement. Hendrick's calls Tom with the report of the murder weapon being registered to Brock with two set of matching prints, Brock and Ellie's.

   

January 17

Margo and Hal go to the farm to ask Ellie and Caleb to come to the station to answer questions. At the station, Margo and Hal officially question Ellie and Caleb about the sequence of events that occurred that evening with Tom, Jessica and a transcriber present. Margo and Ellie agree not to tell Craig. Jessica questions Tom about the urgency of bringing Ellie in and Joe Bailey's involvement. Tonio is brought in to the station for questioning by Hal, Margo, and Joe about his meeting with Brock that day and their business dealings. Mac and Tom listened in. Hal tells Margo about Julie being at Tonio's in the middle of the night. Margo tells Tom that Lien didn't authorize the cable hook-up; then tells Joe and Hal about the cable man that came to the house the day Finley was there. Tom calls Rome to speak to Philip who is not to be disturbed. Tom works with a sketch artist, Norm, to draw the cable man. Hal checks with the cable company to make sure they didn't send anyone. Margo says, "great we had a professional hitman in our house." Tom tells Philip of Brock's death and to come straight to the station for questions when arriving in Oakdale.

   

January 18

Having spent the night at the station, Tom finishes his conversation with Philip. Tom plays the tape recorded message from Emily's place. Lisa drops by the station upset with Tom for not telling her that Lucas was shot. Lisa wants answers from Tom, Margo, and Hal. (In the background, Margo is taking medicine pills.) Margo and Hal search Ellie's office. Margo tells Lucinda to "get real" and follows through to question Lucinda about a gun. Margo tells Hal that Lisa was right; she's like a terrier with a bone, referring to Lucinda. Back at the station, Tom, Margo, etc. listen to the tapes found in Ellie's office garbage can. Frannie arrives with Sean and tells Tom about her concern for Andy and his lying about Julie's whereabouts. Emily gives Tom the letter from Philip and Margo asks her if she recognizes the sketch. Tom reads the end of the letter. Margo calls Ellie to tell her about the letter and to inform her that Emily is convinced by Philips words. Tom reports of no change in Finley's condition. Joe wonders what truth there is to the evidence against Ellie and shares it with Tom, Margo and Hal.

   

January 19

Margo and Hal refute the evidence; Tom mentions that if they don't find the missing ledgers than Ellie might be looking at a murder charge. Joe tells Margo, Tom, and Hal how Finley has solid proof hidden somewhere. Tom and Joe head to the hospital. Margo gets a soda and returns to find Barbara looking at the photo of Hal and Adam. Margo listening to a tape with headphones, when Tom returns back to the station. Philip arrives. Lyla calls the station and Margo says she can't talk. Margo continues to help question Philip with Tom and Hal. Shannon drops by the station to tell Margo about HeyYou. HeyYou then enters the station and Tom identifies him as Bruce Dryfuss. Philip then re-enters the station.


January 22

Tom tries to get Philip to leave when HeyYou accuses Philip of murdering his family. Margo holds him back from physically attacking Philip. Jason Benedict arrives to the station and jumps on board. Tom introduces him to Bruce. Margo and Hal question Philip about the murder weapon gun. Philip makes the connection between Detective Margo Hughes and DA Hughes. Philip tells his lawyer to make a note of the connection along with Ellie being involved with Detective Hughes's brother. Indicating the closeness between Margo and Ellie. Margo further questions Ellie and Caleb about what Philip said. Jason lays into Ellie for lying back in Chicago. Margo falling asleep in her chair' Tom suggests they go home, shower, and work out the tension. As they are about to leave, Hal calls the hospital to find out that Finley died and informs Jason, Tom, and Margo.

   

January 23

Ellie calls Margo for permission to go to dinner at the Mona Lisa. Margo also informs Ellie that Finley died and to hang in there. Joe walks into the station and tells Tom, Margo, etc. that Finley was secretly transferred to a military hospital. Joe tells them that he chose the chief of staff to sign the death certificate due to his closeness to Tom and Margo. Hoping Lisa will run a front page story in the Argus. Joe sends Tom and Margo to the Mona Lisa to give the impression the police have hit a dead end. Hal tries to make them feel bad for him being stuck at the station. Tom and Margo arrive at the Mona Lisa after stopping home to change. Margo talks with John about how important it is that no information slips to Lucinda. Lucinda is grilling Tom for information for her paper. Philip joins in on the conversation with his list of questions giving away new information for Lucinda to use.

   

January 24

Philip demands information from Tom at the Mona Lisa in front of Lucinda and accuses him of protecting Ellie. Tom invites him to his office tomorrow to talk about it. Tom urges John how important it is that he not let it leak that he forged the death certificate. Lisa tries to get information about the case from Tom for her paper. Ellie shares her concern about Caleb's missing whereabouts to Tom and Margo. Jessica lays into Tom about keeping information from her about the case. Tom speaks to Hal by phone and finds out that Caleb was found over Roper's dead body in Ellie's office. Tom and Margo rush out of the Mona Lisa. At the police station, Margo and Hal go through Roper's effects and find evidence framing Ellie. Tom hangs up on Lucinda when looking for information.

   

January 25

Margo calls Jason to let him know that Bruce Dryfuss's prints were found on Brock Lombard's door and they are sending Bruce in for questioning. Margo reads Bruce his rights, then continues to question him about his finger prints on the door and his whereabouts the night of the murder. Joe provokes Bruce and Margo with Tom's help tries to restrain Bruce from attacking Joe. Margo and Barbara have a conversation about when Barbara is going to tell Hal that she knew about Adam's paternity. Hal interrupts the conversation.

   

January 26

Margo, Tom, etc. continue to question Bruce about the night of Brock's death. Ellie calls for Margo to tell her that Philip called her. Margo, Tom, etc. discuss theories and possibilities while Philip arrives bringing Brock's will which leaves half to his ex-wife and half to Ellie. It was drawn up two weeks before Brock's death, says Philip. Next day, Ellie phones Margo at the station looking for new information. Margo phones Emily asking her to come to the station. Tom disgusted about the front page of the paper. Tom and Philip get in a heated argument throwing threats and Margo steps in for Tom and shuts Philip up.


January 29

Margo and Tom stand side by side when Caleb is arrested. Ellie and Jessica are very upset with Tom's decision. Tom asks for Ellie's help in proving Philip is behind the murders. Tom arranges a meeting with Philip after the funeral service and places a listening device in Ellie's hat.
