[Part 2: Japanese Episodes 47-59]

The Missing and Changed Episode List is divided up into Parts based on how Sailor Moon was originally broadcast in 1995 on the Global TV Network. Part 2 contains 13 episodes corresponding to Japanese episodes 47-59. In the final English version of Sailor Moon these became episodes 41-53. If you need help locating a specific episode, check the master episode list.

In Japan this episode was the first in a new Sailor Moon season called "SailorMoon R". It had the same opening song as previous Sailor Moon episodes but with different opening theme animation. For convenience, I refer to this group of episodes as Series 2 when talking about the English version.

The first scene showing the two cats on the roof of Serena's house is cut short in the English version. After Luna comments that the girls are getting on with normal lives, Artemis says to Luna "Maybe we should too..." and leans against her, but she scratches his face. [The whole subplot of Artemis having a crush on Luna is omitted from the English version of Seasons 1 & 2]

The next scene is omitted entirely. Usagi is late for school so she is made to stand outside the classroom holding a bucket of water [if you watch Ranma 1/2 you know about this punishment!]. Ami walks by and says 'hi' but they don't know each other because their memories were erased when Queen Beryl was defeated. Miss Haruna hears Usagi complaining to Ami about her mean teacher so she comes into the hallway and tells Ami to stay away from a bad influence like Usagi. Usagi gets mad and accidently spills the water on Miss Haruna.

The English version is a bit confusing about whether Serena and Darien know each other because in this episode Darien talks to Serena but in the next episode he doesn't seem to know her at all. In this episode, he recognizes Serena but doesn't know her name. That part is the same in English and Japanese. In the next episode he is supposed to be surprised because Serena knows his name and he doesn't know hers but in English, it seems like he suddenly doesn't recognize her at all.

In the English ending to Series 1, Serena and Darien meet at a hospital where Serena is volunteering and Darien is a patient. In the Japanese ending, Usagi is walking down the street moping about her bad test score; she crumples up her test and throws it over her shoulder, where it hits Mamoru (just like when they first met).

In the Japanese version, the aliens had different names for talking to each other versus when they were disguised as students. Alan's "alien" name in Japanese was Ail (Hitoshi Doi translation) or Ali (ADV translation), and Anne's "alien" name was "An". Note than Ali and An together sounds like "alien". When they were disguised as students, their Japanese names were Ginga Seijuurou and Ginga Natsumi (family name first in Japanese). Ginga means 'galaxy'.

Some things had to be changed for the English version. Serena and Molly ask Anne to say something in French. Originally, Usagi and Naru ask her to say something in English!

You'll love this one. Remember when Luna and Artemis are following the monster that is attacking girls and stealing their energy? Naru ("Molly") is attacked while talking on the phone to Serena. Luna says, "This is a girl who gets attacked a lot."

At the very end the English version is "lightened up" a bit by a voice-over in which Serena muses that she will have to be more responsible now that she is Sailor Moon again but Luna remarks that it "never stopped her before". In Japanese, the teary-eyed girl says "To the normal Usagi. Bye-bye."

In the Japanese version, this episode introduced a new closing animation and a new closing song, Otome no Policy ('A Maiden's Policy').

In English, when Molly tells Serena about the audition, she seems nervous and asks Serena to come with her. In Japanese, Naru says she's worried because she always gets caught in wierd incidents! Usagi assures her that she will come along and make sure that Naru is ok [and try to swing an audition for herself, of course].

When Raye uses her ofuda (the anti-evil seal), the picture flashes between scenes of Raye, flames, and a menacing armoured figure standing amidst flames. This is how Rei's ofuda attack normally appears in the Japanese version. Usually, the menacing figure is removed from the English version (I guess people might think it was a satanic subliminal message). The only other English episode in which it appears is "Last Resort". It has been suggested to me that Rei calls upon the spirits of ancient warriors to help her vanquish evil and the armoured figure represents one of these ancient warriors [from Trunks]. An anonymous fan further remarked that Raye says "Maybe an evil charm will work...". Usually, they translate the dialouge to minimize any suggestion of the occult. The opening scene when Serena begs for test help from Amy is shortened in several bits. At first, Usagi thinks that Ami is going to give her some answers so Mako (Lita) whips out a little notebook behind Usagi's back and is ready to write. This funny little detail is cut out. In both versions, Ami tells Usagi and Mako they need to study for themselves. Usagi begs Ami, telling her that she is like a drowning man grasping at rope (Usagi's thought bubble shows herself in a raging river holding onto a rope). Ami points out that the correct saying is 'grasping at straws' and Usagi's thought bubble shows the rope breaking and Usagi getting washed downstream.

After the attack on Ken, Ann and Alan are discussing their strategy, and agree that they can only depend on each other. The scene ends with them holding hands. In Japanese, they also kiss.

51: "Renewed Transformation Usagi's Power Up"
Series 2 Episode 5 "Cherry Blossom Time"

That's right - Mina and Raye don't go to Serena's school. In the original, Mina is thanking Miss Haruna for letting them come along on the trip.

A large part of the Japanese episode is omitted from the original. In it's place, they simply do a collage of food shots and Serena stuffing her face. In the Japanese version, after Melvin gets in his sleeping bag and explains how he stayed there all night to get the best spot for Molly she zips up the sleeping bag entirely, trapping Melvin inside.

Next, Rei and Usagi start arguing. Rei comments that the onigiri (rice balls) that Usagi made don't look very good. Usagi retorts that Rei just brought store-bought lunch. Usagi goes around looking at everyone elses lunch (as usual) and so Minako, Mako and Ami share with her. When Usagi sees that Natsumi (Ann) doesn't have any bento (lunch) she asks if Natsumi is after other people's food. Ann replys that she'll get some energy later and Usagi is confused (that part is the same in English). Then Rei cuts in and says that Usagi is the one after other people's food.

Usagi plots revenge against Rei. She puts lots of hot mustard in a sandwich and gives it to Rei. Rei takes a bite and burns her mouth. She jumps up and yells "Fire" and then falls down and says softly "Soul". [Rei's attack in Japanese is "Fire Soul"]. Rei and Usagi start fighting. At this point Miss Haruna tries not to get angry (that does appear in English).

Next, Usagi doesn't spot Seijuurou, as in the English version, but sees a vendor selling odango. Rei says "Why does an odango have to eat an odango." [odango atama is what they call her in Japanese, rather than "meatball head"].

The rest of the episode is translated quite closely. In Japanese, the Moon Sceptre is called the "Cutie Moon Rod" and the attack is "Moon Princess Halation". In the Japanese, new transformation music is introduced for Sailor Moon

52: Targeted Children! Venus in Action
Series 2 Episode 6 "Kindergarten Chaos"

In the Japanese episode preview Usagi says Hey! Save the children who'll be making up the 21st Century! You'll pay hefty for jeopardizing our senior pension plan! In the name of the Moon, I'll punish you!

At the beginning of the Japanese show, Minako yells at Artemis, calling him ecchi because he is looking at her while she is changing (hey, he's only a cat!). Also near the beginning, Artmemis is narrating; he says that Minako tries hard but is clumsy. Just after this, Minako trips and lands on Artemis and he complains about how heavy she is.

In Japanese, the kids on the bus sing Moonlight Densetsu, the Sailor Moon Theme Song.

Episode 53: "Mamoru and Usagi's Baby Sitter Mayhem"
Series 2 Episode 7 "Much Ado About Babysitting"

The part where Serena changes the baby's diaper is completely altered in English. In the original (and I shake my head in disbelief), Serena thinks that Manami is a girl (apparently "Manami" is not common as a boy's name). When she takes off the diaper she screams "Manami is a girl but has a "wee-wee"!". Mamoru ("Darien") points out that Manami must be a boy.

When Usagi and Mamoru are out shopping for baby supplies, Natsumi ("Ann") sees them and thinks that the baby is theirs. The girls tease Usagi shamelessly in the Japanese version. Instead of saying "Oh look at the cute little family", Minako says "When did you have Mamoru's baby?" and Ami says "Usagi-chan, what did you do with Mamoru-san?"

After Ann storms out of Darien's apartment, Darien says to Serena that the baby threw up on her and she got mad. In the original, Natsumi ("Ann") picks up the baby to hold, but the baby (sensing her evil nature), crys and urinates on her (twice). Although this scene is cut, you can see it in the "Sailor Says" segment.

A cultural note. The cardian in this episode is called Amaterasu which refers to the sun god in old Japanese legends. Cardian Amaterasu appears in front of a sun image and uses orange and yellow special attacks.

In Japanese the baby's thoughts are spoken as a voice-over.

Episode 54: "The cultural festival is just for me!? Queen Rei sings all out."
Series 2 Episode 8 "Raye's Day in the Spotlight"

What are Lita and Mina doing at the temple? In English, they never say. Also, why do Serena and Amy look embarrased when Grandpa says that Raye is at school rehearsing? Here's what is left out. Mako ("Lita") and Minako ("Mina") are helping out at the temple selling good luck charms. Mako says that no matter how many times she gets a broken heart a new love always comes along, so lots of girls buy the charms. When Amy and Serena arrive, Grandpa says that Rei is at school rehearsing for the festival. Then he asks if Serena would like to work there as a shrine girl, but Serena says it's too hard for her to remember all the rituals. [Judging from her expression I think she's just making excuses. She knows Grandpa's reputation!]

Just after Raye makes her announcement over the public address system you can see that Luna has developed a red bump on her head. Usagi hits Luna after Luna makes some crack about Raye being a shameless self-promoter.

The song that Raye starts singing but never finishes is "Call My Name" ("And I'll Be There"). You can hear the whole song on the "Songs From The Hit TV Series: Sailor Moon" CD. [Click here for CD info].

Episode 55: Is Seijuro the Moon Shadow? Mako-chan Firing Up
Series 2 Episode 9 "Food Fetish"

A few scenes are cut out near the beginning. Usagi is late for school. Luna runs after her with her lunchbox, but Usagi trips and crushes Luna. She still forgets to take the lunch with her! Also a scene of the teacher yelling at her for being late and sleeping in class is omitted.

Another scene that's dropped is Mako ("Lita") slapping Ami on the back just before she rushes off to chase Allan. Since she's busy thinking about Allan, she hits Ami so hard it knocks her over.

When Lita meets Allan after school she says "Are we on for lunch tomorrow?" In Japanese she asks if Seijuurou ("Allan") will walk home with her.

When Amy asks why Serena is going to go break up Lita and Allan, Serena says that Lita is always taking all the cool guys and there won't be any left for the other girls. In Japanese, Usagi says she is mad because Seijuurou is going out with Mako even though he previously said that he likes Usagi.

Nina Matsumoto tells us that the cardian in this episode is based on oden. It's left shoulder is abura age and is right arm is chikuwa (fish cakes). The cardian shoots kanpyo, which is made from shaved dried gourd and looks like shoelaces before being cooked.

Episode 56: "Steal Mamoru's kiss! Ann's Snow White strategy"
Series 2 Episode 10 "Mirror, Mirror on the Wall"

The first scene of this episode was ommitted from the english version. Luna sees Usagi sleeping with her head on her english textbook and yells at her. Then Usagi gets mad at Luna for waking her up from her nice dream about eating a giant nikuman (meat-filled bun).

Rei finds out about Mamoru's ("Darien's") problem with the play because he comes to the temple and writes a wish on one of the boards, hoping that his play will go well.

So, Lita has the most "talent", huh? In that case, "Baywatch" must have the most talented cast on television. [Yes, she does say she should be Snow White because she has the biggest bust.]

Here is what the girls originally said when they introduce themselves on stage:

Sailor Mars: "The fire of passion and the power of praying will defeat evil. I'm Sailor Mars of the red high heel!"
Sailor Jupiter: "I was born with this power. I'm Sailor Jupiter of the thunder power!"
Sailor Mercury: "I always do well in cram school and homework. I'm always reading textbooks. I was number one in the country in the exam. I'm Sailor Mercury!"
Sailor Venus: "In the past I wore a mask. The real face is also beautiful. I'm the last Sailor Senshi to appear, Sailor Venus!"

Episode 57: "Beware of after school! The target Usagi"
Series 2 Episode 11 "Detention Doldrums"

The English version actually opens with the second scene. It omits the Japanese opening scene which shows Sailor Moon defeating another cardian at dawn. That early morning fight is why the girls (even Amy) are late for school and why Ann has no energy left.

Notice that Serena is eating lunch behind her English text. Of course, this is English language class, not English Literature class. In the Japanese version, Miss Haruna says (in English) "Once upon a time there was a pretty girl on the moon." and asks Usagi to translate the sentence into Japanese!

After Serena drags Ann downstairs to attend detention, Allan says that he'll have to get energy from someone else. Originally, he says that he is determined to win Usagi's love.

As you can see, Miss Haruna does not assign them an essay but rather leaves a page of English translation problems.

In English, Miss Haruna says to her boyfriend that the evening is perfect. In Japanese, she says she feels as though she has forgotten something!

In the original, Usagi sees that Natsumi (Ann) has hardly finished any problems and asks what she can do to help. So, Natsumi thinks of the story of the tortise and the hare and says that Usagi should sleep for ten seconds. [Remember, the confident hare oversleeps and lets the turtle win]. This strongly contrasts with the English version in which they make it seem as though Serena's kindness conjures up a sweet pastoral image in Ann's imagination.

The fight scene with the cardian is edited to make it seem that the Moonlight Knight saves Sailor Moon before the cardian grabs her throat, but actually he saves her after.

Epsiode 58: "The disagreeing feeling of love! The Makaiju's anger"
Series 2 Episode 12 "Secret Garden"

The symbols printed on the foreheads of the faces of "Four-Face" are the numbers one through four in Japanese. Apparently, Four-Face was male in Japanese, but it has a female voice in English.

In Japanese, Luna asks Artemis to take the twig out of the jar not knowing what it is. I kind of like the English version where she knows but she uses Artemis as a "guinea pig" anyway! Also, the girl's discussion is changed in English. Ann and Allan aren't from the negaverse. In the Japanese, the girls simply figure out that Ann and Allan must be the aliens and associate them with the strange meteor from the first episode of this series.

When Serena goes to see Ann and Allan, Luna argues with her, then suddenly disappears. In the original, she says to herself that she will go back to get the other girls.

When Serena is thinking about her favourite foods, notice that the caption "Nikuman" appears. In the english dialouge, they usually they change "nikuman" to "doughnuts" (or "donuts" if you prefer American spelling).

Alan says he's making cocoa, but he's using a coffee maker.

Episode 59: "The true love awakens! The Makaiju's secret."
Series 2 Episode 13 "Treed"

The whole later middle part is somewhat different - it's really good though! I recommend Hitoshi Doi's Episode 59 summary/translation to get the full version [remember that in Japanese, Ann and Ail are their alien names].
