[Part 3: Japanese Episodes 60-72]

The Missing and Changed Episode List is divided up into Parts based on how Sailor Moon was originally broadcast in 1995 on the Global TV Network. Part 3 contains 12 English episodes corresponding to Japanese episodes 60-72. In the final English version of Sailor Moon these became English episodes 54-65. In the original, when Usagi ("Serena") asks who the little girl is she replies "I'm Usagi".
Then the little girl asks "Who are you? Why do you have the same odango atama as me?" [odango atama = japanese joke name for Serena's hairstyle].
Then Usagi gets mad and says, "The odango atama is my trademark. I'm Tsukino Usagi."
The little girl pulls out a gun (!) and says "If you're Tsukino Usagi, you must have the ginzuishou. Hurry up and give it to me." [ginzuishou=silver crystal]. When Usagi pretends she doesn't know anything, the little girl shoots her. Mamoru ("Darien") rushes to her, but discovers that it was a toy dart gun. He turns around but the little girl has vanished.

In spite of what you may have heard, the bathtub scene is pretty much the same in Japanese as in English.

The food that Grandpa tries to bring them is manju, a type of cake. Rei yells at him to go away because he tries to pick up the girls [I don't know exactly what he says].

The English version doesn't show Usagi spanking Chibi-Usa in Rei's room. Since Serena and Rini are both named "Usagi" in Japanese, they call Rini "Chibi-Usa" which is like saying "Little Usagi" or "Mini-Usagi". Likewise, I think Rini is supposed to be a short-form of Serena. Yes, I know that implies that "Rini" should be spelt "Reeny", but "Rini" is how it's spelt by DiC.

When Tuxedo mask is holding her, Chibi Usa says "It feels warm, just like father."

At the very end, when Usagi is watching Chibi Usa sleep she says "Little Usagi-chan, if you would tell me what was up, I would have listened."

When Serena's father rushes off to yell at Darien, her mother says (in English), "He seems like a nice boy, why don't you bring him home for dinner some time." In Japanese she says "Usagi, he's pretty cool. Next time when father is gone, please bring him home."

Wonder why the next shot suddenly shows Serena's dad leaning against her mom? The English version drops a scene; her father starts crying and says that Usagi has become a delinquent.

When Sailor Moon and the youma are fighting in the cosmetics store, the youma yells "Put on thick make up!" When Tuxedo Mask appears, in English he says "It's what's on the inside that counts", but in Japanese he says "A young girl's skin is very lively and fresh. There's no need for thick make up."

The note in Amy's present says "No matter where you go, we are together."

The English background song is "Only a Memory Away" and is available on the Sailor Moon Soundtrack CD. The song from the Japanese episode is called "Onaji Namida wo Wakeatte" (sometimes called Ami's Song) and is very beautiful.

Amy's new attack, "Mercury Ice Storm Blast" is "Shining Aqua Illusion" in Japanese.

In japanese, the episode opens with Grandpa wondering why there haven't been any girls at the shrine lately. Rei yells at him and shows him an article in a girl's magazine which says that there is a perverted old man at the shrine (note the picture in the magazine)! Rei asks Grandpa to reflect on his behaviour but Grandpa just says that maybe he should retire and let Rei run the shrine because he doesn't want to work if there aren't any girls.

Later, when the girls are working at the shrine, Amy says "We've made enough to cover temple expenses for a year". Sounds unlikely, doesn't it? In japanese she says "It's great that I can practice my calculating skill and work at the same time."

Later, Grandpa and Yuuichirou ("Chad") are doing exercises while wearing aerobics tights. Rei and Usagi are watching. Raye yells at her grandfather that such overexertion is bad for him at his age. Originally, Rei says "You just want to play around with girls!" In both versions they argue, then Rei says she doesn't care what happens to him, and leaves.

Grandpa is on the street trying to get girls to join his fitness club but none will. Chibi Usa ("Rini") appears, but in English they cut out the scene where she actually talks to Grandpa. She tells him that she wants to join, if the training will make her stronger. Grandpa says that it will. Chibi Usa imagines herself spanking Usagi (remember Usagi spanked her at the beginning). Grandpa remarks that he was hoping for older girls but that it's better than nothing. Then Yuuichirou ("Chad") appears with a whole crowd of women and Grandpa is delighted.

In English, Catsy taunts Grandpa to get in the ring with "Rhonda" and prove that he's a good enough fighter. This is in keeping with the theme created for the English version of the episode, but the scene seems a little awkward. In the original, Cooan ("Catsy") says to Grandpa that he will need assistant instructors to help run such a large class and sends her associate (a youma) to demonstrate their "suitability" for this. Yuuichirou ("Chad") protests that he is Grandpa's assistant, but Grandpa, with hearts in his eyes, chooses Cooan.

When Sailor Moon appears, she says to Catsy, "...I know what you're up to. I recognize that sorry tutu. I will fight to defend this temple from evil...". In Japanese, she says "Destroying the fun for an old guy who is a little H. That's going too far! For love and justice, ..." [The roman letter "H" is a euphemism for "oversexed" in Japanese].

Raye's new attack "Mars Celestial Fire Surround" is called "Burning Mandara" in Japanese.

When Chibi Usa (Rini) talks to the Luna Ball, in Japanese, she addresses the person in the image as "Pu". The person in the Luna Ball, does not have the same voice as Luna in the Japanese version. In fact, the Luna Ball gets a different voice in a later English episode. The voice says basically the same thing in both English and Japanese versions.

When the gravity in the room suddenly disappears, Raye floats up and her head ends up underneath Mina's skirt. Mina yells "Hey - do you mind!".  In Japanese Minako (Mina) yells "Ecchi!" which more or less means "pervert".

When the girls crash to the floor, notice that Lita lands on top of Mina. In English, they omit Minako's line; she says "Mako-chan you're heavy." In English they cut out many of the lines dealing with the troubles that Mako (Lita) has being a big, tall girl.

In both versions, Mina and Lita start arguing about whether the boy was teasing Rini because he likes her or because he's a bully. In English, Rini tells them that Serena and Darien were fighting on the phone and broke up. She doesn't say that in japanese, instead she says that she is going to marry Mamoru (Darien). Usagi hears this just as she shows up and in both versions they start fighting. After Serena falls over, Rini says "Didn't anyone tell you to be careful what you wished for?" but in Japanese she says "Getting rejected and can't recover. You three are all old women."

The label on the "love potion" that Serena finds says "down it all at once good luck juice for love". In the original, Usagi asks if they have a charm for getting back a boy who has become cold towards her. When the sisters bring out the jewel, Minako and Mako also reach for it, but then both pull back, insisting that they weren't thinking about their old boyfriends. [The episode about Mina's old boyfriend is dropped from the English version]. Later, in English, they agree that they shouldn't fight with each other over silly things, but in Japanese, they agree that they will both find better boyfriends than their old ones!

In English, the girls are tipped off by one of the sisters saying something about the girls being important for their plan. Kind of obvious don't you think? In Japanese, she says "Love is worthless".

Just before Minako and Mako transform to fight the sisters, Mako says to Minako, "We don't want to turn into a man hater like that."

When Sailor Venus and Sailor Jupiter are trapped by Karaberas and Petz, Petz says, "Saying things like love and depending on men. That's how girls get weak." but Sailor Jupiter replies, "No! Love gives a courage which is stronger than anything."

When Sailor Moon finally shows up, she asks Sailor Mercury and Mars what happened. They yell at her to hurry up and destroy the droid. Sailor Moon complains: "You won't even let me say my finishing lines!"

When they're in the coffee shop, Usagi says, "I'm going to drink this and see Mamo-chan again!"

Ami says, "You'll die." and Rei says, "Her stupidity won't get fixed unless she dies."

Usagi swallows the whole potion, but no more will fit in her stomach and she ends up spitting it out on Rei's face.

In English, Serena asks if they can't go shopping later, and Darien says he has to go right now. In the japanese version, he reluctantly agrees to go later. Usagi rushes off to get cooking lessons from Makoto ("Lita"). The English version drops the whole scene with Makoto trying to teach the other girls how to make curry. Part of it appears in the "sailor says" segment. Minako tries cutting carrots and is just as incompetent as Usagi. She thinks she cuts herself and Usagi yells that Minako's finger is lying on the chopping board. The girls run around screaming for an ambulance, etc. until Makoto looks and realizes that the "finger" is just a carrot tip.

Petz ("Prisma") tries a very dramatic sales pitch in Japanese. She says: "Hey you! Do you have fear in your heart? Do you fear for your life? Black is the color that matches your feelings! Why not eat Dark Fruit and be unhappy?" [another translation I read: "Are you feeling insecure with your life? Black will fit you the best! Have Dark Fruits and let's all be unfortunate!"]. Then Karaberas ("Avery") gives a more appropriate sales pitch, just like in English.

In Japanese, Sailor Moon's dramatic opening speeches are a sort of running joke. In English she always says pretty much the same thing; I won't let you evil Negaverse monsters get away with this before her "I am Sailor Moon... in the name of the moon I will punish you" line. But in Japanese, she always invents a preamble that has to do with the episode and is usually really corny. In this episode her speech translates something like "The supermarket is the source of healthy food, where people get fresh vegetables, and beef for shabu shabu. I'm mad at you. Those evil ones who destroy good food! I will punish you!". The joke in this episode is that when Tuxedo Kamen appears, he says "The supermarket is the source of healthy food, where people get fresh vegetables, and beef for shabu shabu...." Usagi says "Exactly the same line as me! We sure get along!".

It's summer holiday and the girls are complaining about their homework [in Japan, the summer break comes during the middle of the school year, instead of between school years like in North America]. They go to Rei's shrine and find Chibi Usa. She says that Rei has gone to an isolated island.

Rei is shown on a beach, wearing her shrine robes and practicing exorcism spells. She is glad to be away from the others so she can concentrate. The girls suddenly arrive [Sailor Teleport?] and surprise Rei, who falls into the ocean. She yells at them that she has come here to practice. Mako says "Swimming is good practice" [The cats have found Rei's suitcase and are holding up her swimsuit].

The girls run down to the beach and play in the water [notice that except for "Shutter Bugged", the English version drops all episodes that show the girls in swimsuits?]. Usagi splashes Chibi Usa, who can't swim, but Rei and Chibi Usa team up and splash Usagi. Later, Chibi Usa sees a long-necked grey creature in the water, but when she points it out to Rei, it has disappeared.

Mako catches some fish and cooks them for everyone's lunch. [The fish are served like they normally would be in Asia or Southern Europe, i.e. they are gutted, but the scales, head and tail are not removed. Another reason this episode wasn't aired? The American producers probably figured little girls wouldn't like the sight of dead fish.] Chibi Usa doesn't like fish. She throws hers on the ground and storms off.

Chibi Usa is floating on the ocean in an inflatable ring. Suddenly, she sees a shark fin and falls off her ring in a panic. Sharks are swimming around her. A different grey shape zooms by and Chibi Usa grabs on.

Chibi Usa is riding on the back of a grey marine dinosaur [one with a long neck and fins]. The sharks are chasing them and one bites the dinosaur's fin. Chibi Usa turns Luna-P (the Luna Ball) into a propeller (!) and sticks it the water, and the dinosaur zooms off like a speedboat. Meanwhile, the girls realize that Chibi Usa is missing. They take a yacht and go looking for her (Mako drives the boat). Luna and Artemis get sea-sick.

Chibi Usa and the dinosaur land in a cave on another island. Chibi Usa sees a giant eggshell and figures that the dinosaur is newly hatched. It must think Chibi Usa is its mother. She makes friends with the dinosaur. Chibi Usa is hungry, but the only thing the dinosaur knows how to catch is fish. Meanwhile, the girls see smoke coming from a volcano on the island where Chibi Usa is. Chibi Usa is really hungry, so she cooks the fish and eats it [yep, she takes a bite out of a whole (hopefully gutted) fish that is impaled on a spit for cooking]. She decides that it tastes good.

The mother dinosaur finally comes to the cave, but the baby doesn't want to leave Chibi Usa. This makes Chibi Usa think of her own mother. Just then, the volcano erupts. Rei sees Chibi Usa's face in the volcano flames [just like when she sees faces in the fire at the temple] and realizes she is in danger. The girls transform.

The volcano causes a landslide that traps the two dinosaurs. Chibi Usa is able to crawl out, but is afraid for her new friends. The Sailor Senshi use their attacks to slow and divert the lava and Sailor Moon uses the Moon Princess Halatation (Moon Scepter Emanation) to clear the rockslide. Later, Chibi Usa wakes up on the boat. The girls tell her that the Sailor Senshi saved her friends [she doesn't know that the girls are the senshi]. Chibi Usa looks out of the boat to the ocean and sees the dinosaurs. Then the dinosaurs swim away to find a new island to live on.

It seems that even the Japanese producers were not satisfied with this episode. When ADV released an uncut Japanese version of Sailor Moon R on Region 1 (North America) DVD this episode was not included.

Later, Serena is outside airing the futon. In English, Sammy says that she keeps getting extra chores as punishment for being mean to Rini, but in Japanese he is teasing her saying that she wet her own bed.

When Chibi Usa is talking to her Luna Ball, she says that the bad guys are too strong. The Luna Ball tells her that the senshi will protect her, but Chibi Usa doesn't think they are strong enough; she says "My mother.. They did that to my mother! Even my father couldn't beat them!". The Luna Ball says that the senshi are protecting Crystal Tokyo and that the senshi will protect Chibi Usa too.

At the time that Sailor Moon was written there were considered to be 9 planets in the solar system. In Japanese, when the four sisters introduce themselves, they say that they are from the Tenth Planet, The Dark Moon!
