Kerr Smith -- Jack McPhee on "Dawson's Creek"

Kerr Smith takes residence in Capeside as Jack McPhee, a troubled teen and loner whose mystery will unfold over the season. Smith, whose first name was bequeathed to him by his grandmother, who carried it as her maiden name, will also be seen in the coming months in two independent features. In the improvisational comedy, "Kiss and Tell," he plays an arrogant womanizer. Giving a very opposite performance in the follow-up, he portrays a gay artist in the romantic comedy "Hit and Runway," which is currently screening in several film festivals. Smith is best remembered for his portrayal of Ryder Hughes on the CBS daytime drama "As the World Turns." In 1996, his outstanding performance earned him a Best New Actor Award from Soap Opera Magazine. Smith grew up in the Philadelphia suburb of Exton, Pennsylvania, where his competitive nature propelled him to excel in baseball, snow skiing, and student politics, first as class president and then as school president. His first dramatic performance was as Sir Edward Ramsey in his high school production of "The King and I." After high school, Smith followed his financial advisor father's advice by earning an undergraduate degree in "something sensible" -- Business Administration (Finance & Accounting) -- from The University of Vermont. As a Kappa Sigma, Chief Justice of the Greek Judicial Board and a member of the ski patrol in Stowe, Vermont, Smith's college days were "very social," by his own admission. After graduation, Smith returned to Exton to start a business marketing firm with his father. After realizing that he "hated the selling aspect, but loved making the presentations," it was time to become an actor. Smith's first acting job, as an extra in "Twelve Monkeys" with Bruce Willis, came immediately and coincidentally fell on his birthday. His first commercial came soon after. He sold his beloved Bronco II, moved to New York City and landed a part on "As the World Turns" within a few months. A self-taught pianist, Smith enjoys writing music in his Los Angeles home recording studio. He is currently writing a screenplay about a college incident which will remain under wraps until its finished.

Jacks Poem

Kerr's most embarrassing moment on DC:

Excerpt from Twist magazine, "Dawson's New Duo".
"Katie and I had to do this scene basically out of Titanic, where she's sketching me [nude]. I had to wear this triangular patch over my business the whole day. There's one point in the scene where my towel falls off and I have, like, a nude-colored thong jock strap on. I decided to freak Katie out. I had wardrobe stuff a sock for me. I thought it would be like a six-inch sock. This sucker was 24 inches long! Anyway, I tucked it into my jock strap and let half hang out and then put my towel on. When we started to rehearse, I got upand the towel came off and this big slinky popped out. Katie couldn't even look. She thought it was the real deal. She turned bright red. The whole day she just had rosy cheeks."

Question and Answer Series from NY Daily News February 18th, 1999.
By Alan Carter
Kerr Smith, who plays Jack on "Dawson's Creek" and has been the subject of some hot speculation over the last two weeks, takes time out to answer a few questions from our Grand Inquisitor:

Q-- Sex or romance?
A-- (Laughs.) Aren't they the same thing?

Q-- Cat or dog?
A-- Dog. Cats are useless.

Q-- Beach or pool?
A-- Beach. No question. I love the beach. I love the whole thing -- sand, the waves.

Q-- "ER" or "Chicago Hope"
A-- Neither. I don't like medical shows.

Q-- Cry or hold it in?
A-- Oh man, I go to the movies and cry.

Q-- Forgive or forget?
A-- I'm very forgiving. Why not? Everyone makes mistakes.

Q-- I'll do it or let someone else do it?
A-- I'll do it. I'm a total control freak. Yeah. With most stuff. I try to keep my hand in everything.

Q-- Gel or mousse?
A-- Gel. Mousse doesn't do anything for me. Too foamy.

Q-- Bath or shower?
A-- Shower. A bath takes too long.

Q-- Boxers or briefs?
A-- Boxers. (Laughs.) Briefs are too tight. I need room.

Q-- Hanson or Manson?
A-- Manson. You gotta respect a freak.

Q-- White meat or dark meat?
A-- White. I'm a breast man. (Laughs.) If you're talking about women, I'm a leg man.

Q-- Sunrise or sunset?
A-- Sunset. I've never been fully functional during any sunrise.
