Domestic version double backglassIn order to be competitive in the largest pinball market of Europe (where there was competition from Spanish and Italian manufacturers like Playmatic and Zaccaria), Gottlieb trimmed back to reduce costs. With Black Hole, they created a "slimline" export version with a single backglass and the simple sounds-only board used in earlier System 80 games (playing completely different sounds to the domestic version.)

Export version single backglassThe Export version's single backglass (pic. right) retains the imagery of a double spiral of gas and space rubble, which 4 unfortunate spacemen are being sucked into, but it's flat in comparison to the domestic version's double-mirrored "infinity" backglasses (pic. above). This, with the clockwise wave of "chase" lights around the backglass frame and its counter-clockwise spinning disc make for an effect that is truly mesmerising and draws one giddily in.

Some domestic versions did find their way into Europe and other markets and conversely, some export versions remained in the USA and Canada.
