Ok. So I fell victim to the inevitable 'name-dropping' that goes on in this dumb scene. I, too, am a Music major, and can go on rattling off names, and movements, and genres, to no avail. It still strikes me as funny that the people who include the most a ount of 'true' classical knowledge on these sites suck the most at their instrument....the same happens in a school, or conservatory. Anyhow, good site, and I hope that the new interest in shred guitar inspires musicians to become better, and more virtuos c.....I for, one, am damn sick of hearing lousy guitar players.....and if I hear one more 13 yr old play a Metallica riff at a music store, I'm going to throttle him.

Well Thomas, I found your post to be very stereo-typical, and well, just plain stupid (for the most part). Shred is not so much a style as a type of musicianship. You see, Paganini, great composer, and virtuoso on his instrument. Could Mike Keneally or Vai, or Zappa play all 24 of his caprices? Let alone play them fingerstyle on a classical acoustic like Eliot Fisk? I think not. Vai jerks off with his whammy bar and uses his eventide for so much of his shit that it's unbelievable. To tell you the tr th, Vai bores me. I listen to real composers such as Arcangelo Corelli, JS Bach, Mozart, Dvorak, Rimsky-Korsakov, and Chopin. Speaking of Chopin, he was quite the virtuoso on piano, and a remarkable composer. You could say he 'shreds'. Can Vai or Kene lly play any of Chopin's etudes on Piano, like Tony MacAlpine? Nope. Ya see there is a lot of things those boys can't do which "shredders" can. I don't know what your problem is, but to fill a comment like yours in a guestbook of a shred page is pretty idiotic. I got a good laugh from it though. No doubt that Zappa was quite a composer. I'd rather listen to Philip Glass, or George Gershwin. This response is to let you know that Yngwie Malmsteen is not the only shredder out here. But I agree the way they go about saying he is god is not something I'd brag about, for he is a great guitarist who needs to expand. By the way, it's Harmonic-Minor (not harmonical.) Do yourself a favor go buy yourself a copy of DiMeola/Delucia/McLaughlin - Passion, Grace Fire; Corelli's 4 Concerto Grossi; Berlioz' Symphonie Fantastique. I really love the site. I got into Yngwie a few yrs back and through this site I'm getting into people that I haven't heard of before like George Bellas and Kelly Simonz. I've played for about 5 yrs and Chris- for only having played 2 yrs you're pretty da n good. I wish I could find a neo-classical cat that did the tapping thing-sorta like a Steve Vai but with an Yngwie vibe. I love to hear good tapping so if you guys had any recommendations they'd be appreciated. I also would like to see some Vinnie Moor stuff added-he does a great "bach rock" style thing on his Time Odyssey album, he has a ton of chops too. Anyhow, great job on the site!
