The Inside Man

While Jim and Blair are on surveillance with agent Frank Mulroney, assisting a federal investigation into the Lazar crime family, Jim saves the life of the young grandson of Dominick Lazar, the head of the family. When Lazar is keen to express his gratitude Jim seizes a chance to go undercover and infiltrate the family who have frustrated the ongoing investigation for seven years.

He goes undercover as a bodyguard for the grandson, and befriends the grandson's mother, Michelle, who was widowed in a mob hit. Michelle is caught in a fierce battle of wills with Lazar to prevent her young son Edward being assimilated into the violence of the Lazar family. The only possible successors to the old man are his daughter Erica, and young Edward. While Erica tends to her father's terminal illness and endures his patronizing encouragement to wed and provide with him with another grandson, he lavishes his affection and hopes on Edward.

Jim becomes personally involved when he wins Michelle's trust and tries to rescue her and her son from the family. Simon is worried that things are getting too complicated, but Jim's involvement with Michelle has become more personal and he refuses to abandon her as he's her only hope of escape.

During an unsuccessful murder attempt on Dominick Lazar and his grandson, Jim's position is threatened when his senses are affected by an unknown allergy and Erica appears and kills the assassins.
