"I
have fond memories of the CJM. We always used J&M Convent in my
time. As I am 81 now that goes back a bit !
There
was a Reverend Mother Antonio who was my favourite, a tiny Irish nun
with a sense of humor, but could be very strict. A Mother Gertrude,
and Mother Lawrence whom we teased unmercifully. She looked after our
tuck boxes and we used to say " Lolly, you are getting fat, have
you been into my tuck box?" She took our teasing with a smile.
In my time, most the girls were from British Army families. I went overseas
with an american accent and left with a British one. Much to my father's
disgust !
I believe I was a good student, but managed to get into trouble a lot.
I was brought up in the States with so much freedom and they were so
strict there. One time I just walked out of the school and hired a horse
to go riding for the day. The school had the police after me!
I made many good friends and met some again in UK years later.
I had been 2 years in ST Denys' and the food was bad. JMC fed us well
and at decent tables. One bath a week. In the cold weather who would
want more ! Those funny tin tubs....
Having been on the netball team at St Denys' I missed the activity and
persuaded Rev, Mother to let us play against other schools. She set
us up with nice pleated grey shorts, peach coloured blouses and we made
up a good team. We had to wear bands round our bosoms though! Very uncomfortable
to play in.....""
