What is Alternative Universe?

From Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary,
Alternative: different from the usual or conventional
Universe: a distinct field or province of thought or reality that forms a closed system or self-inclusive and independent organization

*smiles* I just had fun copying the definition from the dictionary. =)
But anyway, Alternative Universe (AU) is a specific type or genre of fanfiction. In the context of AU Sailor Moon stories, you will not find youma, senshi, Tuxedo Karmen or Sailor Moon. AU is like a different parallel where Sailor Moon does not exist. The names of the characters are used in the stories but they do not represent what you have learnt about the characters. For example, Lita could be bad at cooking, had a brother and never lost her parents at a young age.
In addition, some often place Alternative Reality and Alternative Universe in the same category. *raises hand* That's what I usually do. =P But anyway, for a better understanding, Alternative Reality applies more to stories with a twist in the Sailor Moon plot. For example, (in the Moon Kingdom) Serenity and Endymion meet for the fist time in another planet such as Venus.
