The Forgotten Knights

Background

The concept of the knights initially began with just one character I had created for a Sailor Moon RPG which at the time, like the RPG, was a pretty shallow person. Still the initial idea of his being intrigued me and forced me to develop him further. By the time I had composed enough of a history, I still essentially had one character, who to me had lacked a lot of depth.

The first of the knights to be conceived by myself was JC, a tough-talking, fast moving warrior who held little regard for authority in most forms. On the surface, JC was initially an antagonist for the senshi but still on their side. The idea was appealing as I found it a good way to get the most out of the senshi themselves. One of my preferred methods of learning about a character is to generally assault them socially and physically in my writing and trying to imagine how they would react. Being able to see ordinary people in extraordinary situations is part of a learning curve for me. But to just have JC verbally batter the senshi didn't make sense. I needed to give him purpose which seemed impossible without giving him a reason for being there in the first place. Why was it only him there with the abilities he has? The easiest option was to create more characters to balance him out. JC was warrior capable of fighting at super speeds. An obvious option was to have a counter part who was as strong as JC was fast with a more sobering attitude. I also conceived two more characters focused around skill and intelligence. Now I have a quartet mirroring the inner senshi.

Before moving on to the knight's characters and personalities, I feel it important to explain the background of the knights. where they come from and how they relate to the Silver Millennium. It was obvious to me that the Moon Kingdom would have its own army of knights to protect the kingdom itself. If there was an army there would be a place they were trained. So the knights would originate from the Moon army, but what would make them stand out?

The history I fabricated states that a hundred years before the destruction of the Moon Kingdom, a new Knight Academy was built on the moon to train the knights of the Moon Kingdom. Upon its opening, Queen Serenity, blessed the gates with her crystal. What happened next was an unexplained phenomena. The crest that rested over the gate was split in four. The crest itself contained symbols to virtues that all Moon knights held in highest regard as part of their service; Courage, Sincerity, Loyalty and Truth.

Queen Serenity knew that these crests were broken and now infused with the power of the crystal. It could only mean they would eventually seek owners, extraordinary warriors above others. She ordered them to be kept at her castle until such time that they would call out for a master.

So that is the beginning of the story. The crests that give the knights their power were blessed by the silver crystal long ago in the Silver Millennium.

The Knights

JC

JC is the knight bearing the crest of sincerity. His special abilities allow him to travel at super fast speeds with agility to match. His personality is a fiery one a almost reflects his physical self. He is quick witted and confrontational. He is even abrasive to the senshi who are the closest thing he can call friends and often purposely makes things difficult for them by disobeying orders or not doing any favours. By most JC isn't doing this to hinder the senshi or hurt them in any away at all, the attention he receives from pulling such stunts is a way of defining himself. Deep down, JC is extremely loyal to the family he serves. His past self was a member of the Earth army under the command of its prince. His defiance to the senshi is more of a proud gesture of his Earth heritage and proof of loyalty to its prince.

In battle, JC utilises his two short swords to great effect. His fast paced and close quarters fighting style is more often than not too much to keep up with. He continues to push himself and those around him to the limit.

Jesse Devaries

Jesse is of Italian/Spanish descent and before moving to Japan, lived with his parents in Italy on the Mediterranean. Jesse's crest is Truth and it empowers him with inhuman skill and accuracy. He can use this to sniper with great ability. Jesse is a cool, calm and collected man. He's a real smooth talker and a favourite with the ladies. His laid back attitude makes it easy for anyone to relax around him and he generally makes an effort to keep an atmosphere everyone can enjoy. He also has the reputation for being a bit of a prankster from time to time.

Before becoming a knight of the moon, Jesse was a ranger in the Silver Millennium. He was taught how to track and live in the wild as well as hunt with a long bow and fight with a sword. As such he has these two weapons with him when he fights in battle. His ability to sniper from a distance is unrivalled and is matched only by his elegance and posture with a sword. Whilst not being the most talented swordsman ever, his style is simplistic but effective, it almost seems like a dance to see him fight.

Joseph Cairns

Cairns bears the crest of loyalty which gives him the power of incredible strength. Cairns is a very silent character, allowing his actions to speak for him rather than words. A natural leader in battle, Cairns is a very caring a protective soul, always looking out for others and seeing their not harmed in any form. He's also capable of keeping people in line with his presence and as such is a sobering influence on the likes of JC.

Cairns uses a mighty halberd to fight. He is a seasoned fighter capable of dealing with almost any adversary. His weapon dictates that he cannot fight at extreme close quarters but he is more than capable and willing to do the job with his bare hands.

Chiyuu Riku

Riku bears the crest of courage and is the leader of the forgotten knights. His crest gives him the ability to increase his thought capability a thousand times and also gives him limited telepathy. Riku is a prodigy in his own right. He has managed to excel in every subject at school, right through to college. He focused his studies on English and history and took up law at college. Riku's biggest defining factor is his thirst to prove himself not only mentally but physically. Fed up with everybody else’s expectations in his studies, Riku surprisingly left college to sign up for a security guard job which promised great advancement in a private military with officer training. Riku thirsted for some challenge he could apply himself to that didn't rely on his natural brains as he felt the need to do something different from what everybody expected of him.

Riku fights with a staff, a well balanced weapon of attack and defence. With his telepathy, Riku is capable of using his staff as a missile as well as his surroundings, making nay battlefield an advantage for him. Riku's fighting style is a counter active one, always parrying strikes and waiting for an open in his opponent's defence before striking.

Plot Lines

The plot lines I had planned for the knights are meant to proceed right through to the future of Sailor Moon when she becomes Queen Serenity of Tokyo. I've never actually seen beyond the third season of Sailor Moon (in fact I never managed to see the conclusion) so not knowing what actually happens at the end of the story created in anime form. This is as much and advantage as it is disadvantage as I'm really using the Sailor Moon story as a platform to write my own and so a lot can be lef to speculation. If its wrong or some one doesn't agree with the events.....well, hey, that's their problem, I wouldn't change my story unless it was a serious contradiction to the themes of Sailor Moon and those points could always be subject to points of view.

With the history and the intended story lines, I now intend to write out past, present and future, but not necessarily in that order but rather in the time line the characters themselves experience them. The memories of the past would be experienced in the present or maybe the future, so I wouldn't be drawing up definate lines of when events occured. This is something I had done before with the story which I have now scrapped, not only because I didn't like the way it turned out but I am as of the moment, unhappy with the writing in general. (Then again, I generally find anything I've written before a great deal worse than I could make it. Its a good thing I'm not a perfectionist, I'd never get my writing out!).

For the sake of not giving away spoilers, I will include most of my plot line notes in the author's notes page, but read at your own risk.
