People rarely talk about the mental game of a multi-day hike. All it took was a few mishaps and for the next couple of days I was mentally defeated. Firstly I lost my wedding ring. I thought it might have been under the tent platform as I had put it on when I got up but my fingers can shrink during the night and so when I was packing up I realised it wasn't on my finger anymore. Also blue skies were rapidly replaced with grey stratus cloud that was thickening. By Mt Hayes I was feeling quite depressed and then it began to rain. In an attempt to keep thermals dry I hadn't put on enough layers so as we went up out of Square Lake and at this stage Roan was building his fitness so I had to keep waiting for him I think I got a bit hypothermic. My so called water resistant watch proved to be relatively non water resistant (and it was my wife's Christmas present!) Roan weathered my mental state quite well. Roan had to keep me from wanting to return to the base of Morraine A to do the easier South Coast Track instead. I felt rather whimpish. We decided to lay low at lake Oberon as I wasn't mentally ready to tackle the next stage in lousy weather. What gave me the courage to keep going was finding my ring at about 7pm and a few hours warming up in a dry sleeping bag. Also the constant rain eased about 2 am - the clearing weather gave us the push to continue. The sounds of the crescent honeyeaters around lake Cygnus and Oberon were quite amazing.
