Fur flies over 'bestial' stage act Rowan Philp The projected image of mating lions on the skin of a semi-naked dancer was disturbing enough for some members of a Johannesburg theatre audience last night. But the introduction of a second young woman - performing the role of a cat in an erotic dance with her partner - forced them to one shocking conclusion : they were watching on-stage bestiality.
Above the tableau were three holograms of humans having sex with animals.
Those who questioned whether it was 'allowed' were told they'd been spared the real shock material planned for the show: the original performance artist - who broke her ankle this week -was to have performed the sequence completely naked. Not only that, but one male actor had offered to actually have intercourse with a live sheep during the performance.
The venue was Carfax, in Newtown - a fast-growing fringe art institution dedicated to challenging, disturbing and, occasionally grossing-out its audiences.
Entitled The Number of the Beast, the show follows an even more graphic play about vivisection two weeks ago. This was the first in the theater's new fortnightly schedule of explicit play on controversial subjects - which it predicts will have "out-raged everyone" by the end of the year.
During Vivisection Party, animal lovers expected a heart-wrenching play about a lost pet used for medical research -instead, they watched in horror as performers wrenched the heart from a lamb's carcass.
Outside, the Animal Anti-Cruelty League, South Africans for the Abolition of Vivisection and several doctors from Chris Hani Baragwaneth Hospital heckled patrons and protested against the show.
A spokesman for the anti-vivisectionists condemned Carfax's literal portrayal, calling the play "a crude and barbarous spectacle" and "a sick and unfeeling act".
Sasha Fabris, Carfax's curator, said she had since received "some choice hate mail", but remains undeterred : "Obviously, these people miss the point. It's time people started wising up to who they really are. South African consciences are very lazy -confronting people with disturbing material wakes them up."
"I'm fairly sure all the resident artists at Carfax are against vivisection, but that's completely irrelevant. Since we are completely neutral on moral issues, we merely present an artistic interpretation of things that really happen in our society."
Named after a notorious mental asylum in London, Carfax was founded by Jo'burg interior decorator Rolf Haungs in 1996. It occupies a former electrical warehouse, once owned by Premier Milling, and the decor is as geared to shock as the shows.
Supporting its basic goal of dissection society, surgical memorabilia hangs everywhere in the labyrinthine complex - from operating-theatre lights and X-rays to skeletons and preserved animal hearts in jars.
