The Contest and How It All Came To Pass
...The Story behind Grandma Ora's European Vacation

I dedicate this page to Ora O'Neill Hackney-Ratcliff, my paternal grandmother, a woman of vision--full of life, spirit and love and living in the early 1900's.

"OFF TODAY! 20 GIRLS, NEWS GUESTS, TO TOUR OLD WORLD"

      THE NEWS EUROPEAN TOUR PARTY.

Taken from the News Journal, Newcastle, Wyo. of June 2, 1911

"It is with much pleasure that we learn that Miss Ora Hackney, of this city, won out in the European Tour contest inaugurated by the Rocky Mountain News some months ago. Miss Hackney was in the eighteenth district and the final count which was made last Tuesday, showed that she had 'run away' from all her competitors in this district, her total vote being 362,761. She ranks fifth highest in the entire contest. Thus Miss Hackney will be one of the twenty young ladies who will make the forty days' trip through Europe at the expense of that paper. The party will start on their trip about the first of July. The News-Journal unites with the many friends in extending congratulations to Miss Hackney on her success in securing this trip."
