Best quote:
"I know you're out there. I can feel you now. I know that you're afraid... you're afraid of us. You're afraid of change. I don't know the future. I didn't come here to tell you how this is going to end. I came here to tell you how it's going to begin. I'm going to hang up this phone, and then I'm going to show these people what you don't want them to see. I'm going to show them a world without you. A world without rules and controls, without borders or boundaries. A world where anything is possible. Where we go from there is a choice I leave to you. " - Neo

In one life, Thomas A. Anderson is "a program writer for a respectable software company. [He has] a social security number, pays taxes, and helps his landlady carry out her garbage." The other life is lived in computers, where [he] goes by the hacker alias Neo and is guilty of virtually every computer crime [there is] a law for."

So Neo (Keanu Reeves) has lived a relatively ordinary life. It is what he thinks is the year 1999. However, Neo is contacted by the enigmatic Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne) who leads him into the real world. In reality, it is the year 2199, and the world has been demolished and over taken by highly advanced artificial intelligence machines.

These computers have created a fake version of the 20th century, called "the Matrix," to keep their human slaves satisfied, while the AI machines draw energy from the humans. Neo is constantly pursued by "Agent Smith," (Hugo Weaving; a computer program who has taken on a human form to infiltrate the Matrix and stop the people fighting the A.I.).

Neo is hailed as "The One" who will lead the humans to overthrow the machines and reclaim the long-lost Earth.

Personal Comments

The whole film is based around the stunning special effects.

For The Matrix, a new technique called "bullet time" was used in which over three dozen camaras, placed in a 365° circular motion, that capture the action of the actor from all angles. Click here to see what I mean. Click here to see the finished shots.

I can't get over how great the special effects actually were. No wonder The Matrix won four Oscars! The effects are mindblowing and were a significant innovation in film technology (much like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs was in in 1937). YOu truely have to see for yourself.

Not only were the special effects great, but like Star Wars in 1977, it also has a great plot, which is essential for any movie.

I love The Matrix because it is so dark and edgy, and was TOTALLY different than almost anything previously seen.

Plot:
The Matrix is like nothing seen up to it's release. Nothing. Not only does it have wicked effects, but is has a great plot to boot.

The story is very dark and edgy but leaves the door wide open for many possible twists and turns. You never know what is going to happen, which is a bouns.

Visual Effects:
WOW. The "bullet time" sequences are totally out of this world! Nothing like these scenes had every been attempted seen on the silver screen. Props to the wicked effects team.

Sound:
The allstar soundtrack to the film has been used over and over again since the film came out. The score is so memorable and catchy that it will stick with you for a long time after you finish the film.

Character Development:
Many of the characters stay very static; we never learn much about them. We know lots about Neo and Morpheus, but that's about it.

Atmosphere:

Realism:
Of course the film is pure fiction, but right from the word go it just feels so very, very real...
