A long time ago, in a glaxay far, far away...
Luke Skywalker (Mark Hammil) is young man itching to join his friends at the Academy, to train to become a star pilot for the rebel Alliance, and to fight against the dreded Empire.
Darth Vader is an evil man bent on controlling the universe through that very same evil Empire.
Little do they both know, but their paths will cross more times than either of them would like it to happen. You see, both people are destined for more than what they have now.
Two droids - R2-D2 (Kenny Baker) and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels)- are carring secret plans that will save the universe from the evil clutches of Darth Vader. These two droids have been sent by Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) to find one Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guiness). Princess Leia is captured by Darth Vader, and imprisoned on a space station called the Death Star. The Droids end up in the hands of Luke Skywalker, a simple boy with a mysterious past, living as a farmer's helper on the planet Tatooine, the farthest place from anything exciting as you can get.
Luke eventually finds Obi-Wan. They discover a hidden message in one of the droids, and together they embark on a quest to return the droids to their proper master on a distant planet.
To do so, they enlist the help of Han Solo (Harrison Ford) and his co-pilot, Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew. Takeing flight in the Millenium Falcon, the fastest ship in the universe, all six individuals make it to their destination, the planet Alderaan, witch has been destroyed by Darth Vader's gigantic space staion.
Upon arriving at Alderaan, or where it should be, the Millenium Falcon is captured by Darth Vader.
While on the space station, Luke Skywalker rescues Leia, and together, with Han Solo and Chewbacca, they escape the space station. Luke's mentor, Obi-Wan, was killed by Darth vader in a duel of light-sabres.
Now, without Obi-Wan to help him, Luke must use his expert piloting skills to help the Rebel Alliance in destroying the Death Star, to save the universe, and become a true Jedi.
Star Wars is the movie the launched the so-called "block-buster" movie era. It was the highest grossing movie for twenty years untill "Titanic" came along, and then only slipped to second.
Star Wars is more than a "special effects" bonanza. It actually has a plot. A story. There is a main character who goes through a tragedy in loosing his family. He then learns that he has powers that he never dreamed about, and that he can use them to save the universe. And not only that, he does save it!
There are great supporting characters who add to the story, like Han solo and Chewbacca. There is also a nasty villan whom everyone dislikes, and a captive princess who must be rescued. The perfect mix for a space drama.
All of the characters have a back story of some sort, and this adds to the mystery of the characters. Where is Han Solo from? Why does Greedo want to kill him? How does Darth Vader know Obi-Wan? Why would Luke's Uncle lie about Obi-Wan? Star Wars is exceptionally well written and the special effects are amazing for their day, and John Williams score is extremely powerful. All of this combined, in part, lead to Star Wars winning six oscars, and many more accolaids.
Star Wars was robbed of the Best Picture Oscar by Annie Hall, a stupid movie that can't compare with Star Wars. Star WarsShould have won hands down. Although, six Oscars is great accomplishment!
Thank GOD for 20th Century Fox! Little did they know, but George Lucas had the biggest sleepr-hit of all time on his hands!
Plot:
What can you say about the plot of Star Wars? It simple and original, yet it draws from Kurosawa, Buck Rogers, Flash Gordon and other space movies, silent commedies, etc. It has the right mix of action, suspense and story that make a great movie.
Visual Effects:
WOW. The cinematography will blow you away, and the visuals are... well... out of this world. The explosions, space ships, aliens, light-sabres... everything works. Nothing looks "cheesy" or overdone.
Sound:
Every sound you hear came from libraries of sounds collected by using different items in combonation whith other itmes. Each sound is unique, and each sound was painstakingly created to give you the impression of authenticity... and they succeeded.
Character Development:
Are you kidding me? This is the whole plot of the movie! Star Wars is a comming-of-age tale, focused around Luke Skywalker's journey from youth into man, and then into Jedi. Granted, this is only the first stage, but wow!
Atmosphere:
From the very get-go the movie is dramtic! The first scene of the film is a space battle, on a space ship. Blasters firing, droids running... it's very easy to get hooked on the movie. In fact, you can enter Star Wars at any point and get hooked!
Realism:
This is why the first thing you see is "A long time ago...". The movie is so good that realism doesn't even apply.
Warren’s Rating:
Movies it was nominated with for Best Picture:
*Annie Hall, (1977); The Goodbye Girl, (1977); Julia, (1977); The Turning Point, (1977)
Is the movie worth your time to watch?
