"It may be of interest to your readers to know in what part of the world we live, and 'what manner of people we are'. Montross is one of the interior towns of Virginia, situated at the head of a big gully about midway between two rivers. It boasts of a wheelwright and blacksmith shop, two stores, two hotels, a bar room, court house, clerk's office and several other places of lesser note.

The buildings are not in straight line or graceful curves, and like Warsaw, is not able to have more than one street. This happens from the fact that we are independent and build our houses without regard as to where and how other people build theirs.

The wheelwright shop and the store are often left open with no one to attend them. But this is considered the best evidence of the industry of the proprietors of the establishment as they have little potato patches to look after and can't afford to stay at their business just to accommodate loafers.

The habits and customs of the place are very much like those of the primitive Christians, all things are supposed to be held in common-hence, we don't require many articles to supply the village and surrounding country side.

No one need bother himself to return an article which he has borrowed, to do so would infringe upon ancient custom and practice, and would be an insult to the lender.

Our citizens are peaceably inclined and have such regard for the feelings of others, that very few difficulties occur on that account.
