ALLEN, John William "Sonny" Jr., 76, widower of Thelma Saunders Allen and owner and operator of Allen's Oyster House, Inc., Coles Point, Va., died December 25, 2007. Mr. Allen was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean era, a retired Director of Northern Neck Electric Co-op and a member of Coles Point United Methodist Church. He is survived by his son, William R. "Billy" Allen and wife, Beth, of Chesapeake, Va.; three grandchildren, Will, Joshua and Samuel Allen; three sisters, Elizabeth Kaplan, Waldorf, Md., Adeline Winstead, Kinsale, and Louise Bailey, Arizona; two godsons, Christopher Palicia and John H. Allen II; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 29, 2007 at Coles Point United Methodist Church, with interment at Carmel United Methodist Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Friday, December 28, 2007 at the Welch Funeral Home, Montross Chapel. Lucy Yeatman Allen, 84, of Warsaw, died on Thursday, October 13, 2005. She was the widow of Peter A. Allen Jr. and a member of Grant United Methodist Church. Survivors are her children, William E. Cooke, Rose Withers, and Betty Lou Conklin, son-in-law, Charles Squires; two sisters, Belle Jenkins and Susie Brown; 14 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. She was preceded in death by her children, Charles C. Cooke, Lucy Schneider and Lorraine Squires. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, October 16, 2005, at Grant United Methodist Church, with interment in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Welch Funeral Home, Montross Chapel from 7 to 8:30 p.m. this evening. ANDREWS, Joseph C., 95, of Tappahannock, passed away, April 26, 2008 due to complications of Alzheimers disease. Joseph was born on October 4, 1912 in Essex County, Va., and was an Army veteran of WWII. He is survived by his wife of nearly sixty-three years, Florence Andrews; his son, Joe Campbell Andrews of Tappahannock; his daughter, Nancy Andrews of Waitsfield, Vt.; a granddaughter, Sarah Campbell Andrews; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Monday, April 28, 2008 at Marks-Bristow Funeral Home. Graveside services will be held on Tuesday at 2 p.m. in Upper Essex Church Cemetery, with Reverend Roy Foster officiating. Yvonne Balasakis Angelo "Yiayia Ma" passed away quietly and peacefully on her wedding anniversary, July 12, 2005, at home with her family by her side at the age of 92. She was born in Thrace, Greece, on July 15, 1913. She touched the hearts of everyone that met her. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, John Anthony Angelo; and her son, Anthony Constantine. Mrs. Angelo is survived by her daughter, Mary Trahadias and her husband, Philip; and her son, Ernest Constantine and his wife, Rita; 10 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Mrs. Angelo was a former owner of Angelo's Restaurant, was a member of Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral, the Philoptochos Society and the Eastern Star. Her remains rest at the Bliley Funeral Homes' Central Chapel, 3801 Augusta Ave., where the Trisagion Prayer Service will be held Thursday (tonight) at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held Friday, 11 a.m. at Sts. Constantine and Helen Greek Orthodox Cathedral. Interment Riverview Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests any expressions of love be sent to the Greek Orthodox Cathedral Building Fund or Sentara Hospice of Chesapeake. Carroll Winston Arthur Sr. was born on Oct. 23, 1933. His parents were the late Nina Pettiford and James Henry Arthur Jr. of Richmond County. He was the oldest of four children, which include one sister, Mary Eva "Sister" Shelton, who preceded him in death in 1997, and two brothers, James Henry Arthur III and Lawrence Chester Arthur. As a young boy, Carroll accepted Christ and joined the Clarksville Baptist Church and attended with his family. He received his education in the Richmond County Public Schools. He leaves to cherish fond memories three sons, Carroll Winston Arthur Jr. (Helen) of Augusta, Ga,, Curtis Arthur (Pearl) of Richmond and Kelvin Arthur (Valerie) of Tege Cay, S.C.; two brothers, James Henry Arthur III (Delma) and Lawrence Chester Arthur of Warsaw; eight grandchildren, Keith, Curtis II, Mitra, Kelsey, Kaleb, Elsie, Yvette and Gerald; nine great-grandchildren; one aunt, Ida Pettiford, and a host of nieces, nephews, several cousins, including family patriarch, cousin John Lewis Pettiford (Gladys) and friends. Funeral services were on Saturday, Aug. 25, 2007, at Clarksville Baptist Church. Pastor Michael R. Reed Sr. officiated. Interment followed in the church cemetery, Funeral services entrusted to the Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home.

Erlene Umber Ashby of Bowlers Wharf, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 27, 2006. Erlene retired from Dahlgren and worked at Good Things in Warsaw for several years. She was an active member of Upper Essex Baptist Church until moving to Oak Grove, where she was active in her church as long as she was able. William Louis Balderson, 74, of Montross died Monday, Jan. 13, 2003. Mr. Balderson was a retired laborer and a member of Popes Creek Baptist Church. He is survived by several nieces and nephews. Swannie Louise Balderson Miss Swannie Louise Balderson, age 96, of Montross died on Saturday, Jan. 15.

Robert Eugene Beatley Jr., 36, of Burgess, Va., passed away on Monday, October 10, 2005 after a lengthy illness. Rob was a former athletic trainer at Virginia State University and was with the athletic department of the Atlanta Braves Organization and Christ Church School. He was a member of the National Athletic Trainers Association, Dallas, Texas and a member of New Friendship Baptist Church, Burgess. He is survived by his daughter, Savannah Beatley, of Richmond; parents, Dr. Robert E. Beatley Sr. and Vera Tackett Beatley; sister, Christal Lynn Wilmer and husband, Tim; nephew, Jordon Wilmer; and special aunt, Betty Kidd, all of Burgess. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, October 11, 2005 at Faulkner Family Funeral Home, Burgess. Robert M. "Bobby" Battaile, 66, of Montross died Tuesday, April 22, 2003. Mr. Battaile was a member of Ephesus Christian Church and a retired farmer. He is survived by his mother, Elva M. Battaile, one brother, Ben L. Battaile III and his wife, Betty, and one niece, Anne Bayne Battaile, all of Montross. Also surviving are several cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Benjamin L. Battaile Jr. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, April 25, at Ephesus Christian Church, Foneswood. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Robert Richard Beasley, 92, of Callao passed away Thursday, Jan. 20, 2005. He was the proud founder of R.R. Beasley Concrete in Callao, where he worked for over 70 years. He was a member of Henderson United Methodist Church at Callao and a 60-year member of Heathsville Masonic Lodge 109. He also was a member of Montross Landmond Masonic Lodge 293. He was very proud of his family and enjoyed spending time with and playing music with many friends. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ilva Hayden Beasley. Survivors include a daughter, Betty Beasley of Farnham; a son, R. Ray Beasley and his wife, Lane, of Callao; a close and loving friend, Martha Lewis of Callao; two sisters, Hilda Croxton of Sandston and Virginia Ferguson of Maryland; his grandchildren, Bill Beasley, Rob Beasley II, Heather McKenney, Chris Packett and Roy Stevens; and four great-grandchildren. A funeral was held Tuesday, Jan. 25, at Henderson United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Sue Ann Salmon officiating. Burial followed in the church cemetery. Mrs. Belfield is survived by a son, Frank Edward Belfield Jr. and his wife, Thelma, of Montross; a daughter, Joyce Ann Sudduth and husband, George of Montross; a brother, Joseph Pitts and wife, Louise, of Temple Hills, Md.; and two sisters, Clara Mae Pitts and Pearl Wolko, both of Richmond. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Ronald Lee Sudduth, Elaine Belfield Landman and Brenda Sudduth Lewis; nine great-grandchildren, Ronald Lee "R.T." Mrs. Boyce was a retired licensed beautician, a member of Coles Point United Methodist Church, and the Betty Lewis Chapter of the O.E.S. She loved her family, community and church. Surviving are a brother, John W. Childs and his wife, Leslie of Oakton. She is also survived by a niece, Donnie Childs Bass and her husband, Buddy of Richmond; as well as many other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a son, Marvin Ellsworth Boyce. Veda L. Bottomley, 63, of Montross, died on Tuesday, November 22, 2005. Mrs. Bottomley was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She was formerly of Vienna, Virginia, where she was active at McLean Bible Church and church secretary at Chesterbrook Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Beulah Baptist Church, Lyells, Va., serving as a librarian, a member of the Westmoreland County Garden Club, the Uptown Quilters Guild, and was an avid needle worker. Surviving are her husband, John F. "Jack" Bottomley; a son, John N. Bottomley and wife, Alessia, of Geneva, Switzerland; a daughter, Joy L. Tayor of Fredericksburg, Va.; five grandsons, Edward and James Bottomley and Luke, Jonathan and Joshua Taylor. Evelyn Sisson Bowen, 86, of Westmoreland County, passed away on Saturday, June 18 due to complications of Alzheimers disease. Widow of John Randolph Bowen Sr., she is survived by her daughter, Brenda Bowen Shearer and husband Donald, of Chesterfield; her son, John Randolph Bowen Jr. and wife Christine of Warsaw; four grandchildren, Christy Bowen Livesay, Cindy Bowen Haynes, Elizabeth Morgan Shearer, and Graham Branson Shearer; one great-granddaughter, Megan M’Lynn Livesay, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Evelyn Sisson was born at Templeman, VA on July 21, 1918, and was one of the last surviving child of eleven born to Willie Norwood Branson Sisson and George Ashby Sisson. She was a devoted wife to her husband, Randolph, and beloved to her children and grandchildren. Friends and family will long remember Evelyn as a person who cultivated the beauty of her gardens, and prepared delicious dinner-fare for all to enjoy. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, June 20, at Lebanon United Methodist Church, with the Rev. James Salmn officiating, and her niece, Judy Sisson Hynson, playing her favorite hymns on piano. Raymond E. Bowen, of Montross, passed away on July 6, 2007, at Wesley Medical Center in Wichita, Kan. Ray and his wife, Chris, were visiting family in Kansas when he suffered a massive stroke on June 27, 2007. Ray had a distinguished 31-year career at Dahlgren's Naval Surface Warfare Center as a Senior Naval Gun Technician. His commitment to excellence and his tireless effort in the field of gun systems and projectiles led to a patent in 2004. Although he retired on Jan. 3, 2007, Ray returned part-time to a continuation of the work that he had enjoyed for many years. Having reached 60 on March 16, 2007, he was pleased to have more time at home to devote to family and friends and his model railroad hobby. Ray was a 1965 graduate of Washington and Lee High School, and he answered his call to the draft in 1966 for a two-year tour in the U. S. Army. In 1967, Ray served in Vietnam for a year, earning a Bronze Star for outstanding meritorious service as an administrative specialist. Ray was a member of the American Legion, VFW, and a lifetime member of the Tropic Lighting 25th Infantry Division. Over the years, Ray had been an active volunteer fireman in the Westmoreland Volunteer Fire Department. He was a charter member of the Montross Moose Lodge and held numerous local and state seats in the organization. Ray was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Edward Bowen. Survivors include his wife, Chris; his mother, Lillian England; two sons, Eddie and wife, Becky, and Kennon and wife, Kasey; step-son, Joe Saunders and finance, Ria Knutson; six grandchildren, Zachary, Nicholas, Sarah Brooke, Kamden Bowen and Alexis Holmes, all of Montross and Jeyton Saunders of Kansas. Funeral services will be Thursday, July 12, 2007, at 2 p.m. at the Welch Funeral Home, Montross Chapel, with interment following at Grant United Methodist Church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, July 11, 2007, at the Welch Funeral Home, Montross Chapel, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. with a Moose Service being held at 8 p.m. A memorial service will also be held at Dahlgren on Friday. Irvin Joseph Boudreaux Jr., of Coles Point, died on Thursday, January 20, 2005. Mr. Boudreaux was a Korean War veteran. He is survived by his wife, Virginia A. Boudreaux; one son, Charles Edward Boudreaux, Warsaw; two daughters, Virginia Lee Boudreaux, New York, and Precia Ann Smith, Ruston, La.; one brother, Rudolph Boudreaux, Lock Port, La.; one sister, Marian Alcantara, Metarie, La. She was preceded in death by a son, Norman A. Bowen. William Bernard Boyle, 83, died Saturday, June 21, 2003. He is survived by family in Montross. Mr. Boyle was a retired farmer and member of Henderson United Methodist Church at Callao. Surviving are his wife, Lois R. Boyle; three daughters, Rose Marie Self, Judy Boyle and Mary Ellen O'Bier, all of Warsaw; two sons, W. Bernard Boyle and Curtis Bryon Boyle, and their mother, Gladys Balderson, all of Montross; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Stacy Allensworth Minor 34 years Stacy Allensworth Minor lost her long courageous battle with cancer April 10, 2004 at the home of her parents Gary and Lois Allensworth of Montross. She was 34. Stacy was employed by BAE Systems of Dahlgren, a member of Beulah Baptist Church, where she had been a Sunday School teacher and church treasurer. Other than her parents, she is survived by her husband, Charles William Minor, a daughter Olivia Grace Minor, one brother, William Daniel Allensworth of Montross and one sister Cindy Marie Allensworth and her fiancé Gregory Marc Fisher of Arlington, a grandmother Thelma S. France of Montross. She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Kermit France of Montross and William F. and Grace B. Allensworth of Colonial Beach. John Middleton Branson, 92, of Montross passed to his heavenly reward Friday, Jan. 16, 2004. He was the husband of Mary Carter Harris Branson until her death in 1970. He was a retired maintenance supervisor for Westmoreland County schools and for the Town of Montross. He served on the Montross Town Council, and was a longtime faithful worker at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church, where he belonged to the United Methodist Men and served as a church trustee. John M. is survived by his wife, Earleane Robins Branson; his daughters, Jane Carter Branson and Evalyn B. Sanford and her husband, Billy, all of Montross; his stepchildren, Betty M. Eby of Tappahannock, Robert A. Mason of Newport News and Richard F. Mason and his wife, Cathy, of Hampton; three grandchildren, Becky S. Bowen and her husband, Eddie, Richard C. Sisson and his wife, Melanie, and Bill Sanford and his wife, Nicole; stepgranddaughter Elizabeth Eby; and four great-grandchildren, Zachary Bowen, Nicholas Bowen, Megan Hundley and Ryan Sisson. Robert L. Brickner Robert Lee Brickner, 70, of Montross passed away Wednesday, April 23, 2008. Mr. Brickner was a retired water and sewer inspector for the D.C. government, where he worked for 38 years. He was a Maine hunting guide, an avid hunter and loved to fish. He also loved to garden and collect different things. He was a member of Pantico Hunt Club and a lifetime member of the National Rifle Association. He is survived by his wife, Linda L. Brickner; two sons, Jeffery Robert Brickner of Montross and James Edward Brickner of Lorton; his mother, Miriam W. Brickner of Carlisle, Pa.; and four grandchildren, Jason and Amanda Brickner of Springfield and Kristin and Kyle Brickner of Lorton. Also surviving are numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws. Roy E. Brune Roy Edwin Brune, 83, of Montross died Thursday, May 15, 2003. Mr. Brune was a retired bank examiner for the FDIC, a World War II Army veteran, a member of Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church, the Elks Northern Neck Post 2666, where he served as past exalted ruler, and the United Methodist Men's Group. He was also treasurer and member of the board of directors for the Montross Rescue Squad. Survivors include his wife, Frances H. Brune; a daughter, Betty Jane Turnbull of Durham, N.C.; a stepdaughter, Susan H. Staples of Colonial Beach; a stepson, Robert L. Hinson of Springfield; two sisters, Gladys Hammond of Venice, Fla., and Helen Larssen of Sacramento, Calif.; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Carol Harper. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 17, at Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church, with interment at 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, in Culpeper National Cemetery. The Rev. Robert Lee Burner, 67, of Montross, a native of Page County, died Monday night, December 6, 2004, at Virginia Hospital Center in Arlington, where he had undergone lung surgery. Mr. Burner was born July 20, 1937, and was a son of the late Charles Lee and Anna Virginia Smith Burner. He graduated from Luray High School in 1954 and received a degree in music in 1958 from the Shenandoah Conservatory of Music, which was then located in Dayton. That fall, he moved to Westmoreland County as a music instructor. He remained with the Westmoreland school system until 1962, when he began pharmaceutical studies at the Medical College of Virginia in Richmond. He received his degree in pharmacy in 1966 and joined the staff of Peoples Drug Store in Montross. He continued his career in pharmacy until his retirement in 2001. Mr. Burner was active in the community. He recently resigned from the Montross Town Council, a position he held for 18 years. He also was Montross mayor for one term and served seven years on the Montross-Westmoreland Sewer Authority. He was a former member of the Montross Planning Commission. He was a former member of the Westmoreland Ruritan Club and a former member and president of the Montross Chamber of Commerce. His professional memberships included the Virginia Pharmacists Association and the Chesapeake Pharmacists Association. Mr. Burner was a member of Andrew Chapel United Methodist Church in Montross, where he was choir director for many years and sang in the choir until recently. He also was a member of the church's administrative board and the Methodist Men. On December 30, 1959, he married the former Margaret "Peggy" Lowery Burner, who survives. Also surviving are a brother, Charles Leonard Burner of Luray; three sisters, Mary Ann Waybright and Carolyn Rothgeb of Luray, Barbara Phillips of Stanardsville. A sister, Margaret Elizabeth "Betty" Burner is deceased. Additionally he is survived by his good friend and brother-in-law, W. Palmer Lowery of Newport News, and many nieces and nephews. Helen Clement Burruss, 83, of Warsaw, formerly of Highland Springs, passed away March 18. She was the widow of Alfred P. "Butch" Burruss Sr. Survivors include a son, Frank A. Johnson; a granddaughter, Misty M. Thompson; a sister, Mary C. Call; three stepsons, William L., Alfred P. Jr. and James R. Burruss; a stepdaughter, Nancy B. CARNEAL, Thomas Walter Sr., 84, of Tappahannock, died Monday, February 11, 2008. He was the retired owner/operator of Tommy's Gulf Station, Carneal's Tire Shop, and Carneal's Tastee Freez. A member of Beale Memorial Baptist Church, he was a World War II Army veteran and a member of the American Legion. Tommy was a charter member of the Tappahannock Warsaw Moose Lodge where he was a "Legion" member and a former member of the Tappahannock Volunteer Fire Department and Lions Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, William Beale and Nancy Elliott Carneal; and four brothers, William Beale Carneal Jr., Douglas G. Carneal, John M. Carneal, and Temple M. "Pete" Carneal. After leaving Westmoreland, he relocated to Philadelphia, Pa., where he attended Canaan Baptist Church. He attended O.I.C. trade school and also Ace Welding School to complete a course in welding. He was employed at Penn Fruit for several years, Keysby Madison in Amber, Pa., and retired from the Budd Company after 26 years of service. Minister Barbara Christine Gaines Camp of Dunnsville, formerly of Colonial Beach, died Thursday, Dec. 22, 2005. She is survived by her husband, Joe. L. Robert Preston "Dickie" Carey Sr., son of the late Thelma Reed Carey Roane and Robert Walter Carey, was born April 20, 1938 in Westmoreland County. He died Saturday, March 5, 2005. Mr. Carey was a member of Potomac Baptist Church, Hague and a 1957 graduate of A. T. Johnson High School. He was guitarist of the Golden Stars at Morning Star Baptist Church and briefly played for The Carey Family, a group that consisted of his wife and children. He was a truck driver, owned and operated a dump truck business and was last employed with Waste Management until he became ill. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Dorothy Hackett Carey; five daughters, Elizabeth Russell, Marie Johnson, Patricia Garnett, Brenda Carey and Linette Payne; two sons, Robert Carey Jr. and Jerome Carey Sr.; three sons-in-law; two daughters-in-law; seven brothers, Arthur Carey, Larry Carey, Walter Carey, Alvin Carey, Elwood Carey, Wayne Carey and Gregory Carey; two sister, Alease Lane and Grace Carey; seven sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; a devoted aunt, Dallas Branson; 13 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren and a host of other relatives and friends. The journey of life for Lakesha Renee (Ke-Ke) Campbell, 17, ended suddenly early Saturday morning, May 27, 2006. Ke-Ke was born June 15, 1989 in Richmond to Meshelle S. Thompson and John R. Campbell Jr. She accepted Christ as her personal savior at an early age and joined Jerusalem Baptist Church in Kinsale. Ke-Ke was a sophomore at Washington & Lee High School where she was an active member of the Student Council Association, Family, Career & Community Leaders of America, and the Varsity volleyball team. To know Ke-Ke was to love her. With her pleasant, cheerful smile and easy-going ways, hardly ever was there a time when you saw her down. When talking with her she was always “just chilling.” Ke-Ke loved to spend time at home listening to music, bonding with her sister and taking care of her favorite pet dog, “Pebbles.” Those who are left to cherish her memory are a devoted mother, Meshelle S. Ashby Neal Coleman, 50, of Spotsylvania passed into peace on Thursday, June 7, 2007, at his home. He was employed by Food Lion/Bloom as an Assistant Manager in Stafford. He was a native of Montross. He was well known for his hard and devoted work as a volunteer with the Westmoreland Rescue Squad and as an assistant manager for the Blue and Grey Grocery Store. William Brandon “AC” Crawley departed this life Friday, September 16, 2005. He entered this world with a smile on August 12, 1981 in Richmond. He was raised in Kinsale and received his education in Westmoreland County public schools, graduating June 15, 2000 from W&L. Along with his high school education he attended Northern Neck Regional Vocational Center in Warsaw and successfully completed his trade in 2000. While attending school he worked at McDonalds in Tappahannock and following graduation worked as a laborer. At the time of his passing he was employed with Virginia Paving Company in Stafford. Elizabeth Goheens Dameron, 87, of Hague, died on Tuesday, February 1, 2005. Mrs. Dameron was the widow of Malcolm D. Dameron and a member of Nomni Baptist Church. She is survived by a daughter, Janice D. Jenkins and her husband, Donald, of Montross; a brother, Joseph W. Goheens, Mount Jackson, Va.; a sister, Shirley Diehlman, Accokeek, Md. Robert C. "Bob" Douglas, 65, of Springfield, TN, formerly of Montross, died Feb. 7. Bob, known to many as Cup-O-Tea, was a self-employed painter and a member of the Montross Moose Lodge. Survivors include a daughter, Starr Pendergrast; two grandchildren; six sisters, Deane Vaughan, Jackie Rose, Shirley Clark, Nettie Jones, Millicent Harper and Linda McCammon; two brothers, Carl Douglas and Wendell Douglas. A funeral service was held Feb. 11 with burial in the Middle Tennessee Veterans Cemetery.

Lola Butler Dove, 78, of Montross died Thursday, June 3, 2004. Mrs. Dove was the widow of Richard Hayden Dove and was a member of Popes Creek Baptist Church. She was a former volunteer with the Northern Neck Hospice Support Services and a member of the Telephone Pioneers Association. Survivors are her two sons, Richard H. Dove Jr. and his wife, Fay, and James A. Dove and his wife, Sheila, all of Montross; two sisters, Virginia E. Nash of Montross and Ann B. Martin Anthony Encinger Jr., 64, of Montross, died on Saturday, April 30. He was born in St. Louis, Missouri, but lived from early childhood until his retirement in 2000 in San Francisco and Marin County, CA. He owned and operated a construction management company and a high-end millwork company in the San Francisco Bay area. He was a member of the Northern California Construction Institute, Society of Professional Engineers, the April Club of Northern California and the Association of Construction Inspectors. He is survived by his wife Mary Flannery Encinger; and son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Shannon Encinger; a grandson, Christian Encinger; granddaughter, Isabella Encinger; a brother, Louis Encinger; two brother and sisters-in-laws, Peter and Loudel Flannery, Terrance Flannery, Nancy Flannery Koch, all of Mill Valley, CA, Bryan and Catherine Flannery of Corte Madera, CA; 10 nieces; two grand nephews; and two great-nieces. FALLIN, Donald Elvin "Donnie," of Warsaw, went safely home to his mother, father and loving Lord on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 at the age of 57. Donnie was preceded in death by his devoted parents, Henry "Kenneth" Fallin and Grace Bailey Fallin. He is survived by his three brothers, David W. Fallin and wife, Ellen, of Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Joseph B. Fallin of Lottsburg, Frank K. Fallin and wife, Pamela, of South Charleston, W.Va.; his two sisters, Mary F. Pritchard and husband, Daniel, of Warsaw, and Beth E. Fallin of Charlottesville. Donnie touched so many lives and was loved by all. He spoke volumes through his sweet nature and sparkling eyes. She is also survived by 10 grandchildren, Amy Ahrens and husband, Peter, Lori Seipp and husband, Larry, Matthew Fallin and wife, Laura, Philip Fallin, Grace Ellen Fallin, Lee Fallin, Faith Fallin, Dea Fallin, J.K. Fallin and Bethany Pritchard; and five great-grandchildren, Calvin Ahrens, Abe Ahrens, Miriam Ahrens, Andrew Seipp and Owen Seipp. She was preceded in death by her father, James Jacob Bailey; her mother, Mary Love Abraham Bailey; and granddaughter, Carrie Beth Pritchard. Grace lived a life of unselfish sacrifice in the service of her Lord and devotion to her eldest son, Donnie. She was a devoted wife, a loving and caring mother, a faithful friend and teacher. She grew up in Skinquarter in Chesterfield County, then attended Mary Washington College in Fredericksburg, Va. She taught "Tiny Tot Nursery School" in her home for many years. She was also involved in helping her husband manage the farm and Fallin Rental properties. Grace was active in her church for many years. She took her faith seriously and her desire was to serve Christ first, other second and herself last. Grace, also know as "Dolly" to some, was well known as a faithful prayer warrior. Lorena Dovell Fries, 88, of Montross, died on Friday, February 27, 2004. Mrs. Fries was the widow of August Ernst Fries and a homemaker. She was also the oldest member of the Colonial Beach Eastern Star and a charter member of the Colonial Beach VFW. Survivors are her son, Kenneth Allen Triplett of Clarksville, Tennessee; two daugthers, Shirley C. Morgan of Montross and Janet Trigger of King George; a sister, Pauline Scott of Tallahassee, Florida; a sister-in-law, Yvonne Dovell of Raleigh, North Caroline; nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren. The book of life was gently closed for Arlene Margaret Givons, who departed this life on Monday, July 16, 2007, at Mary Washington Hospital. She was born December 17, 1943, to the late Critcher and Lillie Stewart. She accepted Christ at an early age and joined New Monrovia Baptist Church under the leadership of the late Rev. Lloyd Watts. She received her schooling in the Westmoreland County School System. On Aug. 22, 1970, she was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late Deacon Thurman Givons. She was employed by Mary Washington Hospital for many years. Peggy is the name we all knew her by. Her favorite colors were royal blue and silver. She enjoyed watching Wheel of Fortune and she Loved That Chicken from Popeyes. She will be remembered by all as a person who would keep it real with you and would not mind telling you what was on her mind in order to get you straight. She will be missed by all for her famous cooking, especially the crab cakes. Peggy served her church family diligently until she was called home to rest. She was a member of the Deaconess Board, President of the Kitchen Committee, Assistant to the Junior Ushers, Church Custodian, and a member of the Senior Ushers. She served on the Pastor’s Aid Committee and participated in numerous programs with the church. Marion Ellowease "Weasy" Harcum Marion Ellowease "Weasy" Harcum was born in Neenah, Virginia on July 14, 1954, daughter of the late Robert and Virginia Wiggins Wise, Sr. At an early age, Weasy as those who knew her lovingly called her, joined Jerusalem Baptist Church. Weasy was educated in the Westmoreland County Public Schools, graduating from Washington and Lee High School in 1972. After graduation, she worked as a LPN at Tappahannock Hospital for several years. She later went to work for Continental Telephone Company in Warsaw and C & P Telephone in Silver Springs Maryland. Weasy returned home from Maryland in 1987 to care for her mother, who passed away in November 1987. After her mother’s death, she remained in the area working in the food industry. At the time of her death, she was employed by the Buoy Food Store in Heathsville, Virginia. Weasy, was joined in holy matrimony to Hurston Harcum on March 28, 1998. Marion departed this life on Friday, October 7, 2005 at her home in Northumberland County, Virginia. Her parents, and two brothers: Melvin and Richard preceded her in death. He was the widower of Carrie Hall, was a World War II Army Air Forces veteran, an educator for 30 years, a local prominent farmer and a member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church at Nomini Grove. Robert Henderson “Daddy Roy” Roy died Monday, June 13, 2005. He was born June 25, 1918 in Westmoreland County to Rev. William and Alice Roy. He married Lillie Maiden in 1938 and they lived in Washington, D.C. for many years. This 46-year marriage was blessed with three daughters, Althea, Zelda and Gale. In 1994, 10 years after Lillie’s death, Roy married Cora Williams, who survives him. Robert worked as a construction worker for many years and was an active member of Local Union #74. He was also a part-time taxi driver until his health failed. Surviving are his wife, Cora; three daughters, Althea Knowles (Cornelius), Zelda Lawrence, and Gale Session; two stepchildren, Joy Brannum and Sherwin Henry; two brothers, Earl and Allen; six grandchildren; six step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three step-great-grandchildren and many other relatives and friends. Services were held June 18 at Galilee Baptist Church with Pastor Joseph Haden, Sr. officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

She was a retired telephone operator for AT&T, a member of Provide nce United Methodist Church and a union member of Communication Workers of America. Survivors are her son, Calvin B. Harold Sinclair Kuster Harold Sinclair Kuster, 77, of Montross, formerly of Washington, D.C., widower of Barbara Ann Campbell Kuster, died Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2005. Mr. Kuster was a member of Bayview Baptist Church, Colonial Beach, a retired equipment operator for Hutchinson Bros. and an Army veteran. LATANÉ, Mary Hill, age 89, of Oak Grove, widow of Lt. Colonel David Eaton Latane (USAF, Ret.), died on Saturday, February 23, 2008. Mrs. Latane was a graduate of Smyrna High School in Smyrna, Tenn., and the Northwest Institute of Technology, where she received her degree in Medical Technology. Mrs. Latane also attended the University of Tennessee. Prior to her marriage, Mrs. Latane worked as a medical technologist in Michigan during WWII, and afterwards lived with her family in various locations, including Fairbanks, Alaska, Rome, N.Y., and Taichung, Taiwan. After her husband's retirement, Mrs. Latane worked at Oak Grove Elementary School as secretary for her husband, Col. Latane, who was the principal. Surviving are one son, David Eaton Latane Jr. (Dawn) of Richmond; three daughters, Mary L. Sulik (Waldy) of Farnham, Margaret L. Haynes (Tom) of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Susie L. Bowie (Charles) of Oak Grove; 10 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two brothers, John Hill of Lewisburg, Tenn. and Frank Hill of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; and one sister, Tina H. Sarah Virginia London departed this life at Warsaw Health Care Center on Friday, Sept. 23, 2005. She was born Sept. 24, 1914 and raised in Westmoreland County, the daughter of Peter N. and Marie K. Hackett. Sarah met and married Eathon Emmanuel London Sr. in July 1934 and their union was blessed with six children. Sarah worked for various government agencies including the Printing Office, Pentagon, Navy Yard and Bolling AFB. She was predeceased by two children, Erick G. and Enoch P. Raymond William Johnson, Jr. "Sonny" entered eternal rest Monday, May 9, 2005. He was born Jan. 13, 1942 in Westmoreland County, the eldest son of Raymond and Margaret Fulcher Johnson. He was educated in Westmoreland County school, joined Zion Baptist Church at an early age, later joining Siloam Baptist Church where he served as a trustee before reuniting with his home church in 1995. His marriage to Mary E. Johnson ended in divorce, but was blessed with six children. Raymond served in the U.S. Air Force after high school followed by service with the D.C. Police Department and ended his 24-year federal career at NSWCDD when he retired in 1994. After retirement he took numerous courses in veterinary medicine and automotive mechanics. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, crabbing, hunting and boating. Surviving are his mother, Margaret F. Johnson; daughters, Maureen and Mauve Johnson and Maronica J. Brown; sons, Ralph Tyson, Richard Pierre, and Raymond William Johnson; six grandchildren; six brothers, Hayes of Hague, Robert, Roland, Levi, Charles and John, all of Kinsale; four sisters, Eliza J. Kelly, Edith J. Smith and Elsie J. Thompson, all of Kinsale and Dr. Esther R. Johnson of Woodbridge; one foster sister, Merita Jo Carey of Hague; a host of other relatives and friends, among them special friends Mike and Diane Gadwill, Tina O'Donael and William Kelly, who stayed with him many nights during his illness. He was predeceased by his father, Raymond Johnson; three sisters, Dorothy J. Lewis, Josephine and Collis Johnson; and a brother, James A. Luster W. Jones WARSAW—Luster Walker Jones, 86, of Warsaw died October 9, 2007, at Riverside Hospital in Tappahannock. Also known as “Uncle Walker,”Mr. Jones was born May 14, 1921, in Haynesville to Florence and Frank Beal Jones. He was one of 12 children. He attended school in Threeway. He worked in the Reedville fishing industry and later at Quality Automotive in Tappahannock. He was the janitor for Warsaw Baptist Church. He was famous for his jokes and most of all for his gift of imitating people. He was predeceased by his parents, all his sisters and brothers, and his wife, Bettie Alice Jones. He is survived by three children he partly raised, Frances Ann Prichett of Maryland, David Jackson and Earl Jackson; a sister-in-law. Mae Jones of Farnham; a special friend, Virginia Landon; and many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held October 12 at the Second Baptist Church in Warsaw where the Rev. William Roane and the Rev. James Johnson of Lyells Baptist Church officiated. Interment was at the church cemetery.

Marian Lou (Davis) Knight, 73, formerly of Westmoreland County, died June 12 in Morgantown, WV of heart failure. The Class of 1948 Valedictorian of Colonial Beach High School, she received a BS from Mary Washington University in Home Economics in 1952. She was preceded in death by former husband, Lt.Col (ret.) Herbert Edward Knight of Hague. She worked as a tax preparation specialist and accountant from 1969 until a brain damaging aneurysm struck her in 1980. She had a warm and open heart for everyone she met. She was a great mom who sacrificed much for her children’s happiness and her husband’s military career. Knight is survived by daughter Margot H. Catherine Louise Langmack, who passed away to be with her Lord on Saturday, June 11, at the Riverside Hospital in Tappahannock. She was 46 years old. Cathy was a resident at the Orchard Nursing Home in Warsaw for the last year and had been diagnosed with Huntington’s disease. Prior to her illness, Cathy lived in Easton, MD, resided in San Pedro, CA for twenty years. She was born in Silver Spring, MD on Oct. 12, 1958 and was the daughter of Holger C. Langmack Jr. and the late Beverly Green Langmack. She was the loving aunt to Justin, Sara, and Denny Colie, and Jessica Hughes of Richmond, and Robbie Derricotte of Silver Spring, MD, Melissa and Michael Langmack of Easton, MD, and Brody and Brooke Largent of Urbana, MD. Catherine was a 1976 graduate of Easton High School. She was a former member of the First Baptist Church of Easton and recently of the Nomini Baptist Church of Montross. Cathy had a passion for music and played the guitar, piano and sang in the Easton Baptist Church and in various St. Michaels and Easton local establishments in the late 70’s and early 80’s. She played in a band and recorded several records in California. Maude Ellen Wellons Latane, 78, of Washington's Birthplace in Westmoreland County died at her home Wednesday, Jan. 21, 2004, after a long illness. She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Lawrence W. Latane Jr.; and their two children, Lawrence W. Latane III and his wife, Becky, and Rebecca Ripley and her husband, Jeff. She also had five grandchildren, Sarah Beth, Cameron and Sage Latane, and Evan and Hollyn Ripley. For many years she was president of the Wakefield Memorial Association which supported National Park Service efforts at George Washington Birthplace National Monument. In the 1970s, she helped her husband restore Blenheim, an 18th-century Washington family home which was placed on the National Register of Historic Places. She was born in Southampton County and grew up in Emporia. A memorial service was held at St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Oak Grove at noon Monday. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother James McCorkle. He received his BA degree from Union College, Lincoln, NE in 1949, and his laboratory technician training in St. Louis, MO. He married LaWanda Carrick on October 4, 1951. His life long ambition to be a physician was achieved when he was accepted into Medical School at Loma Linda University, Loma Linda, CA in 1954. He graduated from medical school in 1958 and interned at Los Angeles County Hospital. On finishing family practice residency in Ventura, CA he practiced in LaCrosse, KS for eight years. In 1969 the family moved to Loma Linda, CA for residency in internal medicine. In 1972 they moved to Tappahannock where he practiced medicine at Tidewater Memorial Hospital, and for a short time in Warsaw. In 1958 he had a heart attack. Because of this it was recommended by his cardiologist that he retire from his practice on May 1, 1986. He enjoyed his church, family, gardening, reading, and traveling. His family will truly miss him. We loved him. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lawanda McCorkle; three sons, Brian McCorkle of Loma Linda, CA, Bruce and wife Kathy of Tappahannock and Brent and wife Gail of Randallstown MD; two sisters, Leann Kang of Walla Walla, WA, and Laura VanDecar of Klamath Falls, OR; one sister-in-law, Betty McCorkle of Bellingham, Wa; three grandchildren, Robert Ryan and William Randall of Tappahannock, and Jacob Brent of Randallstown; five nieces; and two nephews. The family will receive friends Thursday, May 5 from 2-4 p.m. and 6 – 8 p.m. at the Marks Bristow Funeral Home, Tappahannock. Funeral services will be held Friday, May 6 at 1 p.m. at the Tappahannock Seventh-Day Adventist Church on Hospital Road with Pastor Clinton Adams officiating. Garnett S. Mozingo, 93, passed away May 28, 2007 at Parham Health Care Center, Richmond. Mrs. Mozingo formerly of Montross was the widow of Cleveland H. Mozingo and a member of Currioman Baptist Church. She is survived by one son, E. Wayne Mozingo and wife, Sandy of Mechanicsville; one grandson, Wayne Mozingo Jr.; one granddaughter, Christine Balser, and three great-grandchildren, Stephen Mozingo, Emily Mozingo and Charlie Balser. Robert Edward Lee Peed, 91, the widower of Patricia G. Reed, died at his home at Horner’s Beach on Friday, Aug. 10, 2007, after a brief illness of cancer. He was born at Peed, Va. in Westmoreland County, the son of the late Lee Dolphus Peed and Daisy A. Peed. He was the brother to the late James Donald Peed, Edna P. Pound and Lelma P. Horner. Mr. Peed retired from The Daily News in Washington, D.C., where he was a manager and supervisor of 57 men. He and his wife lived in Maryland until his retirement in 1972, when he built his home and moved to Horner’s Beach. Mr. Peed was a member of Popes Creek Baptist Church where he was a trustee and served on several committees. He is survived by his sister, Marion P. Horner of Montross; two nephews, Garnett C. Horner Jr. and his wife, Betty, and Allan Pound and his wife, Elaine; a niece, Diane Pryor; five great-nephews, Garnett “Clay” Horner III, Dean Horner, Trey Pryor, Donnie Pryor and Craig Jefferson; several great-nieces, Sally B. George Freeman Pickens, son of the late Hosae and Lula Williams Pickens, entered into eternal rest on Feb. 6, 2007 at the McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond. He was born on March 26, 1932 in Townville, S.C, but grew up in Greensboro, N.C., where he received his education. A graduate of North Carolina A.& T. Johnnie R. Pratt Johnnie Roosevelt Pratt passed away Dec. 24, 2005. He was born Feb. 24, 1933 to t James H. and Susie A. Lucas Pratt in Westmoreland County. He was he eighth of nine children, six of whom preceded him in death. Johnnie was educated in the Westmoreland County School System. He accepted Christ at an early age and joined Morning Star Baptist Church in Montross. Johnnie served the United States Army from 1951-1953. Upon returning home from the service to visit his mother, he later decided to go to Philadelphia, Penn. While there he worked out of Lot #57, Heavy Highway and Construction. As you travel over the many roads and bypasses of Philadelphia, you can recall that he helped build them. He joined First Corinthian Baptist Church where he served on the Senior Usher Board. After being in the city for a while he met and married Aldonia Luster. Due to failing health he left his job and moved back to Virginia. He joined Galilee Baptist Church and was a member of Galilee Senior Usher Board and the Trustee Board. He is survived by his wife, Aldonia Pratt of Warsaw; a daughter, Alease Virginia Pratt of Philadelphia, PA.; a son, Darrel Keith of Mitchellville, Md.; a sister, Virginia Smith of Montross; a brother, George Pratt of Philadelphia; three grandchildren, Rashad Green, Charles and Tayia Holden of Philadelphia; two great-grandchildren; four brothers-in-law, Lloyd Pierce, Theodore Luster, John Luster and Clayton Bowles; five sisters-in-law, Ruth Johnson, Mary Baldwin, Estelle Luster, Dorothy Dent and Anna Bowles; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; three devoted friends, Lorenzo Johnson, Eugene Garner and James Lilly. Winifred Schlosser Ptucha, 79, of Montross passed away at her home Thursday, Jan. 1, 2004. She was the widow of Nicholas Paul "Nick" Ptucha and was a member of St. Timothy's Catholic Church. She was active in 4-H Clubs, was a master gardener and a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary of Montross and the Westmoreland Garden Club. RICE, Chancellor Asa, 10, of Fredericksburg, died Friday, January 18, 2008 at his home. Known by many as "Chan Man", he held a flame that lit the lives of everyone he touched. Though brief in years, he had a greater impact on this world than most might hope to achieve in a full lifetime. Chancellor was the son of William and Pamela Rice. Mr. Richardson was a retired insurance agent for Acacia Mutual Life Insurance Company and a lifetime member of the McLean Fire Department. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Mae Richardson; a son, David L. Richardson II, Richmond; two daughters, Donna R. Dowd, Fairfax, and Dawn R. Steele, Gainesville. Miss Eva Roth, 88, of Montross died Monday, June 16, 2003. She was a retired self-employed health care worker. Survivors are her close friends, Margaret Nash, with whom she made her home for 25 years; Shirley and Wayne Jones; Catherine Fraer; and her dog, Laddy. Isaiah "Pipe" Roy Jr., 71, of Westmoreland County died Tuesday, Aug. 10, 2004, at Warsaw Health Care Center.

Isaiah Roy III, departed this life to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, Feb. 9, 2007 at 7:19 p.m. Zeke or Junior, as he was affectionately known by his family and friends was born Sept, 8, 1955 to Iola W. Roy and the late Isaiah Roy Jr. He received his education in the public schools of Westmoreland County. He became a member of the Grants Hill Baptist Church at an early age and served as a Junior Usher. He also attended many other churches. Funeral services were held at Grant’s Hill Baptist Church on Saturday, Feb. 17, 2007.

Born in Westmoreland, Mr. Roy worked as a truck driver and was a member of Grant's Hill Baptist Church. He was the son of he late Isaiah Roy Sr. and Earnestine B. Roy. Survivors include his wife, Iola W. Roy; two sons, Isaiah Roy Jr. and David Roy; a sister, Mary Johnson; two brothers, Garnett Roy and George Roy; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. A funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 14, at Grant's Hill Baptist Church, Leedstown, with the Rev. Lloyd A. Fox officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. John Scarborough, 87, of Stratford Harbour, died suddenly at home on Wednesday, June 7, 2007. “Jack” was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and was the son of the late Ernest and Agatha Scarborough of Andalusia, Pa. Jack spent most of his life in Bucks Co., Pa. He graduated from Bensalem High School and for two years attended the University of Pennsylvania. A memorial service will be conducted on June 15.

William Alfred "W.A." Scates William Alfred "W.A." Scates, 64, of Route 1, Warsaw, passed away on July 23. He was predeceased in death by his parents, William Alfred Scates and Mildred Scates and his stepfather, Ernest B. Hinson. Surviving are his son, William Stephen Scates and companion Patsy, of Warsaw; a daughter, Brenda S. Dillon and son-in-law, Trent Dillon of Virginia Beach; three granddaughters, Lauren Mitchell, Amber Dillon, and Alexis Dillon; sister and brother-in-law, Lewis and Joyce Hinson; a sister, Marion Peters and former wife, Betty Scates; a special friend, Nellie Adams and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He was a member of Oak Grove Baptist Church where he loved to sing in the choir. For many years he was an active member of Rappahannock Baptist Church. He retired from NSWC Dahlgren in 1992 where he worked in the Public Works Department. He was a self employed farmer and worked for Sonny's Tire Service in Montross. He was a member of the Northern Neck Antique Car Club and the Callao Moose Lodge. Memorial services will be held Wednesday, July 27, at 2 p.m. at Rappahannock Baptist Church with the Rev. V. Mary Jett Schools, age 58, of Emmerton, widow of Russell Morris Schools, died Thursday, April 29, 2004.

Mrs. Schools is survived by two sons, Russell M. "Rusty" Schools of Warsaw and Joseph "Joey" Schools and his wife, Danielle, of Tappahannock; a daughter, Debbie Schools of Austin, Texas; three brothers, John T. Jett Jr., Paul D. Jett and Earl S. Jett, all of Fredericksburg; and three sisters, Margaret J. Morgan and Palma J. Blom, both of Stafford, and Anna J. Johnson of Suffolk.

Hattie Mae Smith departed this life, after a long illness, on Tuesday evening, September 13, 2005 surrounded by her family. She was born June 11, 1930 to Jerry Fulcher Sr. and Irene Wilson Fulcher. She was a member of Zion Baptist Church, Kinsale and was educated in the public schools of Westmoreland County. She united in marriage with Walter Smith, who predeceased her. Surviving are one foster sister, Christine Braxton of Oak Grove; three cousins, William Green, Laura Mae Gaskins, and Jannie Thornton, all of Kinsale and a host of other cousins and friends. Services were held Sept. 19 at Zion Baptist Church with pastor Donn Hall Sr. officiating. Interment was in the church cemetery.

TANCREDI, Anthony Charles Sr., 84, of Tappahannock, died Wednesday, February 20, 2008 at his residence, surrounded by his loving family. He was a graduate of Gonzaga High School, Georgetown University and a biochemist for the U.S. Government. He was a World War II Army Veteran and served in the Battle of the Bulge under Patton. Pauline D. Willis, born on July 7, 1924, died Aug. 4, 2007. She was the daughter of the late Emma T. Evans. She received her early education in Elkton, Md., and her later education in Wilmington, Del. She graduated from Minors Teachers College/Howard University, with a B. S. degree in Education. Pauline taught school in Baltimore City Schools, and later began teaching in the Washington, D.C., Schools. Her schools were Madison Elementary and Leckey Elementary, in the District, and Walter J. Mitchell Elementary in LaPlata, Md. She loved to teach fifth grade, and she also loved to have the youth participate in Black History plays, which she directed for the school and community. On July 4, 2000, Pauline married George Asbury Willis. She is survived by her husband, George Asbury Willis of Montross; one devoted son, Andre D. Smith of Glebe Harbor; one daughter, Paula Holiday of Lively; one granddaughter, Whitney Duncan of Tucson, Ariz.; one great-granddaughter, Alicia Duncan; one sister-in-law, Mable Burgess of Washington, D.C.; two brothers-in-law, John Willis of Nevada and James Willis of Montross; one aunt, Althea Mitchell of Washington, D.C.; a special caregiver from Wisconsin, Conswayla Minatee; two special cousins, Evelyn Swann of Washington, D.C., and Stanley Gaskins of Maryland, and many other cousins, relatives and friends, especially Keith and Barbara Johnson of Pomfret, Md. TRAVIS, Mary Jane Tarbutton, 84, of Montross, daughter of Freda and Harry Tarbutton, passed away on Thursday, January 31, 2008. She was a graduate of Lasell Junior College of Aburndale, Maine and Richmond Professional Institute, now VCU. A teacher of 18 years, she was a resident administrator assistant at the School of Distributive Education at RPI in Richmond. She also taught in Fredericksburg and Westmoreland County schools. Mrs. Travis was very active in her church, having held offices in the E.C.W., the Altar Guild, and a former member and officer of Westmoreland Woman's Club. She was also very active in the Westmoreland County Cancer Society. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Roper Travis, M.D.; and a daughter, Jennifer Broun Travis. She is survived by a son, Kenney Caperton "K.C." Travis of Montross; and one daughter, Katherine Drewery of Roanoke; one nephew, Kent Tarbutton of St. Paul, Minn.; four grandchildren, and one great-grandson. Thomas Roper Travis, MD, 84, of Montross, died at his home on Monday, April 17, 2006. Dr. Travis was the son of the late Dr. and Mrs. John Randolph Travis. He was a native of Caroline County, growing up on what is now A.P. Hill. He graduated from Mica High School upon joining Liberty Baptist Church he was baptized in the Travis Pond. He was stationed in Trinidad serving as a medic studying malaria during World War II. Upon returning to the states, he was stationed at Fort Belvoir. He attended VPI, Mary Washington College and the Benjamin Franklin Business School in Washington D.C. He graduated from MCV and served his internship at Johnston-Willis Hospital. He came to Montross in the early 1950’s and worked with Dr. C. Harper Ward prior to going into practice for himself. Surviving are his wife, Jane Tarbutton Travis; his adopted children; a son, Kenney C. (KC) Travis of Montross; and a daughter, Katherine T. (Kit) Drewery of Roanoke; four grandchildren and a great grandchild. Dr. Travis was preceded in death by a daughter, Jennifer Broun Travis, and a twin brother, Francis M. Travis. Diana Elizabeth Thompson departed this life on Saturday morning, May 28, 2005 after a long illness. She was born Oct. 11, 1907 in Westmoreland County to Edward Nelson and Alverta Jones Nelson. She was a member of Galilee Baptist Church. Left to cherish her memory are a devoted daughter, Cora Johnson and son-in-law, Moses Johnson of Hague; ten grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; a host of great-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Emma Nelson of W&L Home for the Elderly at Flat Iron and Sarah Walker of Shelterham Nursing Home in Philadelphia; and a host of nieces and nephews. Services were held June 2 at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Oldhams with Pastor Darryl E. Fisher officiating and Pastor Henry C. Lee delivering the eulogy. Interment was in the church cemetery.

Dorothy Lillian Thompson was born on July 1, 1924, to the late Vincent and Lillian Samuel Thompson. After a lengthy illness, she peacefully went home to our Heavenly Father Monday, Aug. 6, 2007, at the Warsaw Health Care Center. Dorothy was educated in the public school system of Northumberland County. She graduated from Julius Rosenwald High School, Reedville, in 1943. In August of 1943, she married the late Horace D. Thompson Sr. To this union three children were born: Rebecca (Beck), Doris (Fuzzy), and Horace Jr. (Sonny). She joined the Lively Hope Baptist Church at an early age and remained a loyal and faithful member until her health began to fail. She was a member of the Missionary Circle, Willing Workers, and she served as Vice President of the Progressive No. 2 Club. During her lifetime, she worked at a number of places, including the local oyster houses, H. Warshow & Son, the Elastic Plant and Arrowhead/Scovill. She worked for Arrowhead 20 plus years before retiring in the mid 1980s. Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories: one son, Horace (Sonny) Thompson Jr. (Ruth); one daughter, Rebecca (Beck) Thompson; one son-in-law, Norman Tate; one sister, Ida Mae Gaskins; two brothers, Warren H. Thompson (Marie) and Carroll W. Thompson (Maggie); one brother-in-law, Napoleon Rollins; one sister-in-law, Dorothy H. Travis Wade Turner, 13, of Midlothian, Va., departed this life on February 26, 2006, doing what he loved best - living life to its fullest. Born to Marie and Jimmy Turner on April 29, 1992, he is survived by his parents; three brothers, Dylan Turner, Gregory Edmonds, Rusty Edmonds; grandparents, Evelyn Atkins, Catherine Turner and Kellam and Chris Turner; aunts and uncles, Cathy and Brian Thomas, Bobby Turner, Nancy and Billy Inman, James Atkins; cousins, Jonathan Locher, William Turner, Katie Turner, Latisha Inman, Megan Inman, Alex Varboncoeur, William Inman, Devon Atkins, and many friends and teammates. Walter Henry "Billy" Turner died Dec. 26, 2005. The son of the late Samuel Turner and Virginia Turner Wilson, he was born Aug. 23, 1931 and was affectionately known as "Billy." Billy joined the Air Force and served during the Korean War conflict. During his early years he was a construction worker in Washington D.C. and in his later years worked at Bevans Oyster Co., Driftwood, Peoples Express and painting jobs. His hobbies were listening to gospel music, attending gospel concerts and cutting lawns. Billy will be greatly missed by all. He is survived by his wife, Catherine Turner of Sandy Point; seven daughters, Sterling Bibbens, Rose Jones, and Dora Fauntleroy all of Hague, Linda Marshall of Bowling Green, Karen Turner of Montross, Billie Jo Garner and Cheryl Turner, all of Hague; two sons, William "Mickey" Turner of Saudi Arabia and Lionel Turner of Mt. Holly; five aunts, Rosette Lee, Margaret Johnson, Alese Reed, Earlene Parrott and Carolyn Ashton; three uncles, John W. Fulcher, Moses Fulcher and Raymond Fulcher Jr.; 21 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, four sisters-in-law; a special uncle that was like a brother, John W. Fulcher; an adopted daughter, Sandra Johnson; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral service was held Dec. 31 at Zion Baptist Church in Kinsale with Pastor Donn Hall Sr. officiating and interment in the church cemetery. Pallbearers were Martin Bibbens, Levi Johnson, Charles Smith, Byron Keith Johnson, Roland Johnson and Rev. Gerald Smith. Honorary pallbearers were John W. Fulcher, Eugene Garner, Melvin Smith, Moses Fulcher, Edward Hackett and Zebedee Thompson.

Mary Newberry Wood 66 years On Tuesday, June 15, 2004, an amazing mother made her last journey home. Mary Newberry Wood, 66, of King George County passed through heaven's gate at 10:05 p.m. at Mary Washington Hospital. Mrs. Wood is survived by her husband, William G. Wood; her son, William Franklin Hunt Sr.; two daughters, Barbara L. Wood and Tonya McMillan Cruse; one granddaughter, Joy Mullen; two grandsons, Jason Wood and Franklin Hunt Jr.; two great-granddaughters; and two great-grandsons, all of King George. She is also survived by her brothers of North Carolina and many loving friends and family members who will miss her laughter and her songs always. Mrs. Wood will suffer no more in life, but live on in glory as she has joined her mother and father and many loved ones who had passed before her. A viewing was held at Nash & Slaw Funeral Home, King George, on Thursday, June 17. A funeral was held on June 18, at Tabernacle Baptist Church in King George, with the Rev. Sherman Davis officiating. Mable Elizabeth Jones Suttle, 67, of Montross died Saturday, June 26, 2004. Mrs. Suttle was a member of Grant United Methodist Church and was the widow of Alvin Wilkins Suttle. She is survived by a son, Michael J. Suttle of Montross; two daughters, Linda S. Fallin and Karen S. Taylor, both of Montross; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Suttle; three brothers, Earl V. Jones, Edward Jones and George C. Jones; and two sisters, Rose Colligan and Grace Ellis. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, June 30, at Welch Funeral Home, Montross. Interment will follow in Grant United Methodist Church cemetery. Charles Edwards Thomas, 84, of Montross died on Friday, April 30, 2004. Thomas was a retired self-employed merchant, and he was a member and a deacon of Popes Creek Baptist Church. Arthur L. Thorne, 86, of Montross, died on Sunday, February 9, 2003 at the Warsaw Health Care Center. Mr. Thorne was the former town sergeant for the Town of Montross, a member of Currioman Baptist Church at Zacata, a member of the Federal Order of Police No. 232, a member of the Montross Landman Lodge No. 293 A.F.&A.M., and a veteran of the Merchant Marines. Survivors are his wife, Virginia Yeatman Thorne; a son, Jim Thorne of Montross; two grandchildren, Tracy Thorne and Troy Thorne, both of Tappahannock; two great-grandchildren, Reed Thomas Thorne and Daniel Lucas Thorne, both of Tappahannock; two brothers, Vernon Thorne of Philadelphia, Pa. and Edwin Lee Thorne of Aberdeen, Md.; and one sister, Mildred T. Davenport of Baltimore, Md.

Jerline Theresa Rich Walker, daughter of the late Harvey Stewart and the late Ora Irene Rich, went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, July 14, 2007, at Heritage Hall Health Care Center, King George. Affectionately known to all as Aunt Jeri or Aunt Leen, Jerline was born January 19, 1933, in Westmoreland County. It was there where she also received her education. In 1955, Aunt Leen was joined in Holy Matrimony to the late John (Johnny) Robertson Walker. Although Jerline and Johnny didn’t have any biological children, they had their kittens. They were their children, and they treated them as such. She accepted Christ at an early age, was baptized and joined the New Monrovia Baptist Church under the leadership of the late George E. Carter. She was a faithful member and she served on the Usher Board until her health would not permit. Aunt Leen worked various jobs throughout her life, including domestic work and as a cook. Her hobbies included doing crossword/puzzle books, watching game shows, and playing solitaire. She leaves to cherish her memory four of her dearest cousins, Maurice Johnson, Carasile McDowney (Harry), Bessie McDowney (Johnnie), all of Colonial Beach and Annette Brown (Robert) of Fort Washington, Md.; a sister-in-law, Peacola Walker Goodwyn of Clinton, Md.; three God-daughters, Michelle Newman of Colonial Beach, Stella Campbell of King George and Leslie Smith of Tallahassee, Fla; five nieces-in-law, Mabel Tucker of Red Bank, N.J., Lawrenza Hunter (Charles) of Forestville, Md., Mildred Laidler (Allen) of Somerset, N.J., Thelma Bradford (Harry) of Upper Marlboro, Md., and Eugenia Harding (Michael) of Richmond; four nephews-in-law, Ralph Goodwyn (Ophelia) of Macon, Ga., Torris Brooks (Linda), Randolph and Franklin Brooks, all of Richmond; Patricia Boone, her home care nurse and friend; Sandee Hayes, cousin and “acting” nurse’s aide; a special little cousin who she and Johnny called their own, Jareka Shepherd, all of Colonial Beach; a special cousin, Gwendolyn Johnson of Georgia, whom she enjoyed talking to hours and hours at a time on the phone; a cousin who was raised up with her as a brother, Clifford Johnson, Colonial Beach; a long time friend, Rosa L. Hayes, Silver Springs, Md., and a host of other cousins and friends whom she held near and dear. Funeral services were held on Thursday, July 19, 2007, at New Monrovia Baptist Church, Colonial Beach. Interment followed in the Johnson Family cemetery. Funeral services entrusted to the Weldon-Fisher Funeral Home.

Wise was a member of the Currioman Baptist Church, past officer of South Gate Lioness and Camp Springs Ladies of the Elks, #2332, Camp Springs, Md. Funeral services were held April 19.

Elizabeth Catherine Veney passed away on Monday, Dec. 25, 2006 after a short stay at Tappahannock Manor in Tappahannock. Her only child, Lottie Ann Sorrell, preceded her in death. On Sept. 8, 1909, the sun rose for Elizabeth Catherine Veney, affectionately known to many as Bessy, she was the daughter of the late Harrison Veney and Lottie Ann Newton. She was born and raised in Emmerton. Early in life, she accepted Christ. She was baptized and joined Mulberry Baptist Church in Warsaw. Funeral services were held on Sunday, Dec. 3.
