George Washington Bowman 80 George Washington Bowman, 80, of Montross left his residence Tuesday, July 30, 2002, to go to a better place, his mansion in the sky. He will be missed, but his and our faith in the Lord will see us through. Born in Marion, N.C. on Sept. 22, 1921, he was a security guard at Stratford Hall Plantation and a member of Currioman Baptist Church at Zacata. He was the son of the late George Marshall Bowman and Pantha Freedman Bowman. Survivors include his wife, Virginia Woodring Bowman; six daughters, Mary DeAtley of Colonial Beach, Estelle Meyers of Wichita, Kan., Ann Church of Colonial Beach, Brenda Schools of Warsaw, Pauline Callis of Colonial Beach, and Linda Patterson of Orange; three brothers, Boyd Bowman of North Carolina, Cecil Bowman of Montross and Junior Bowman of North Carolina; six sisters, Jeanette Pipes of Buffalo Cove, N.C., Roxie Hamlet of Montross, Cedren Robbins of Georgia, Florence Balderson of Montross, Reba Alverson of Montross, Betty Sue Kerby of Patterson, N.C.; 16 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eugene Bowman. "Keep looking up." A funeral was held Friday, Aug. 2, at Currioman Baptist Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. The Rev. Curtis Hawks and the Rev. Gurney Robbins officiated. Pallbearers were Lawrence Schools, Frank DeAtley, Gene Church, Kenny Callis, Edward Meyer and Billy Patterson. Welch Funeral Home, Montross, handled arrangements.
