Confused by whether
the new growth
is a
flower spike or new vegetative growth?.

The following may assist in identifying this delima.

VEGETATIVE GROWTH

  • Oval in shape at its base
  • Sharply pointed tip
  • Almost triangular in shape from the side
  • When 75 to 100 mm long, tip separates showing the ends of the individual leaves
  • Growth rate is relatively slow

FLOWER SPIKE

  • Rounded in shape, with blunt tip
  • 'Gives' when pressed with fingers
  • FOUND
    • between the pseudobulb and new leaf growth
    • in the axil of an outer leaf which splits
    • on the opposite side of the newly developing pseudobulb to the differrently shaped leaf growth
  • Growth is comparatively rapid
  • They are often darker coloured than the vegetative growth
