The Old Gringo in Old Mexico

My Name is Tom Parks, The Old Gringo, and I have had a lifelong love affair with Mexico. I explored Baja for many years which seemed to be the natural thing to do since I was born and raised in San Diego, California. Over the years I became very interested in the cacti of Baja. My mother was instrumental in promoting my interest in this particular species of plant life. She took much pride in her lath house full of the colorful flowering cacti known as epiphyllums.

In Later years when the San Diego Wild Animal Park was opened I was able to put my interest in cacti and Baja to use as a volunteer horticulturist and I was one of the founders of the Baja Plant Garden located inside the park. With the permission of the Mexican government, I made many trips into the outback of Baja with family and friends to collect specimens for the garden. Later I will tell you about some of the places I went to in Baja and show you some of the sights and introduce you to some of my good friends there. Now I live in Merida, the capital of the state of Yucatan, Mexico. We will talk a bit about the sights of Merida and Yucatan omitting all references to Cancun!

My Family and I have also spent many a day fishing the exceptional waters off of San Diego as well as Baja California.  It is here that I would like to begin my entry into the world wide web.  Just click on the photo links below to navigate to "The Fishin' Pages" and beyond.

Jim and Tom Parks

Family Fishin'  has brought generations of Parks boys together with their dads, and given Parks men pause to ponder the meaning of life. On these pages are found some images that reflect those threads woven into the tapestry of my heritage.

Old Gringo's Passport

Your Passport  to some of the places of interest in my world is found on the following page. Links to my sons and their web sites, other life long friendships, a sporting venue that the Old Gringo endorses, some great food and other O.G approved web pages!

Submarine Service Dolphins

The Submarines  of the United States Navy were a large part of my life between 1939 and 1963. I invite you now to enter into the realm of the Silent Service. Never has the phrase "It's not like it used to be" had so much meaning than when it is applied to the diesel electric boats of my era as compared to the modern nuclear fleet.

Baja California

Baja California  is like nowhere else on this planet.  I invite you to experience it now on these pages.  Found here are some photographs of the beautiful cacti of Baja, and you will meet some folks that are truely the salt of the earth!  My heart and soul are forever here in the Baja Peninsula.

The Cacti of Baja California

Baja in Bloom  is a tapestry of color and texture that will be remembered forever by anyone who takes the time to discover it. Come with me now and feast your eyes on this special place and learn about the cacti of Baja California, some of which are found no where else on earth.
