Sacajawea
The years 2003-2006 mark the Bicentennial of the Lewis & Clark Corps of Discovery Expedition. This doll pays tribute to Sacajawea, the 16-year-old Lemhi Shoshoni woman (born near what is now Salmon, Idaho)
who, with her two-month-old baby Jean Baptiste, was the only woman
to accompany this amazing expedition. She was an invaluable
help, especially as the group approached her familiar native territory
(she had been kidnapped by an enemy tribe several years prior and taken
a thousand miles from Idaho to Fort Mandan near present-day Bismarck,
North Dakota). She acted as an interpreter & also collected native roots
and berries when food supplies ran low. Both Lewis & Clark wrote admiringly about
her in their diaries, and Captain Clark eventually adopted her son Jean Baptiste,
nicknamed 'Pomp' by the men of the expedition.
