DNA Knack
Harvest time and the traditions surrounding it were very important
in farming communities of long ago. Weaving a corn dolly
(in England where this art reached a highly-developed state, all grain
is called 'corn') is one such harvest tradition. Some people thought
that the wheat had a living spirit, the Spirit of the Grain. A talisman
was woven from the last bundle of the harvest to provide a place for this
spirit to reside over the winter. In the spring, it was crumbled and the seeds
sewn with the new crop to let the Spirit live on.
Someone who saw this Knack (also known as 'neck' and pronounced that way).
told me it looks like a model of DNA, thus its name.
