Tery Daly chats with trendsetter Eric Aspengren about the reptilian
transformation of the Post-Trendies.
Q: The Trendies just finished recording 2
songs for a split 7" with The WT, how did that go?
A:
So far, so good. We have yet to mix down. I like working with Pat. He's a
good engineer. The hard part is still left. I mean, mixing can be really
difficult. But, to be honest, I've been surprised at how easy the whole thing has gone so far. I'm never quite sure how much people are going
to agree or disagree about recording. Few groups have the same ideas or opinions. I guess that's why I'm still playing with these guys. It's
not the dream record I still have in my head, but that's a function of my head,
not anything to do with this record or the guy's involved.
Q: How was recording at the Dune-a-dome?
A: Recording at the dome was pretty cool. I can't say I spent enough
time there to really get a gauge of how it really sounds. Julee is a gracious host.
Q: There has been a slow change in The Trendies sound since
the departure of Matt Silcock, and from what I've heard there are more on the way.
What direction are you guys moving in, and what's the reason behind it?
A: I think the slow change actually started when Matt Joined the band.
Originally, I was pretty much the only songwriter for the band. When Matt
joined and Greg started writing for the band, the sound changed quite a bit.
I had an idea about a sound I wanted. Then I stopped writing songs. Dze joined the band and the sound changed even more. It's all been quite a
natural evolution.
I suppose if I had some stronger sense of will or
something, it wouldn't have changed as much. I can't say they would have
been good. Of course, now I'm writing songs again ( I got my distortion pedal to work the way I wanted, I think I might be the only one who
likes the sound, but fuck it) and Greg is sort of leaning into the same direction
I was already leaning. (He has always really been there anyway).
The songs we are recording with Pat and in our basement are probably going to be
retired when we have enough new material to replace it. At the rate I'm writing songs and the other guys are writing that should only take a
couple
months.
Q: It was reported in The Log that the songs are called 4
o'clock and Barry Melton what are the songs like?
A:
Well, that's hard to explain isn't it? Barry Melton is definitely a Dze Bayles tune. I guess quirky is good way of describing it. Dze's a much
more sophisticated songwriter than I have ever been. (probably always will
be) 4 o'clock is a pretty straight-ahead rock tune written by Greg. It rocks
pretty hard. I can't really say much else.
Q: What else in coming up for The Trendies. full length CD?
Touring?
A: Well, we might do some sort of full length. I think that's the plan. We have
been doing some recording in our basement. It sounds pretty good. We have
talked about touring. We'll see. I've never been particularly good at following up on any plans I make. So, it's as much up to the other
guys. I have always wanted to tour, get some sort of contract, blah blah blah.
I'm never sure just how much the other guys are interested in doing that
sort of thing. I personally think we deserve more than we've gotten. Not that
we don't appreciate the fans we have. We definitely have fans. We've been
either too busy or lazy ( I'm not sure which) to push this to some other
position. I've always been convinced we'd sell records outside of the
States. Who knows. The new stuff will kick people's asses, maybe that'll get us
over the hump.
