Peter Tough was born between 1803 and 1805, probably in Aberdeen, Scotland. He married Ann Keith in Saint Nicholas Parish, Aberdeen on 21 December 1833. They had at least three sons; John, Alexander and James all christened in Skene Parish, Aberdeen between 1834 and 1837. The Parish of Skene christened over twenty Tough children between 1818 and 1870, many of whom were probably cousins and second cousins of John, Alexander and James. It is unclear who Peter's parents were. Peter's second son, Alexander, departed to the North East of England in or around 1856 and married. I always assumed Peter and Ann remained in Aberdeen but I have found reference to them in the 1881 census living at the Union Workhouse in Skipton, Yorkshire. The Master of the house was John Ogden. He was listed as a general labourer but I think it is fair to say they were quite poor. Peter died on 25 May 1883 at the workhouse. The death certificate records the death due to "natural decay, suppression of urine". Webster's 1913 dictionary describes "suppression of urine" as
After Peter's death his wife, Ann, then moved to Sunderland to live with her son, Alexander, and his family. When she died, she is recorded as the wife of Peter Tough, a Contractor. I don't know where else Peter lived or worked during his life. |
