BIOGRAPHY:
James Tough was born in approximately 1837. He was christened in Aberdeen on 18 April 1837. His parents were Peter Tough and Anne Keith. He had two brothers John and Alexander.

Oral history passed down through his family suggest that two Tough brothers came to Sunderland from Aberdeen, had an argument and fell out. This is likely to be James and his brother, Alexander (b.1835). They were both born in Aberdeen and were the first generation to settle in Sunderland. This is likely to have been after 1861 as both brothers named their first-born sons after the other brother, Alexander's son James in 1860 and James's son Alexander in 1861.

James married Jane Hutchinson and they had at least ten children.

James died on 12 August 1895 in Sunderland. There was a probate on his will on 24 July 1896 in Durham. His widow, Jane Tough was confirmed as executrix of the will which was worth approximately £95 in effects.
