Ann Eliza Skirrow was born in approximately 1830, the daughter of William Skirrow, who was a shoemaker, and Ellen Lea. She had at least one other sister, Agnes Skirrow, who was christened on 9 February 1834. By May of 1852 Ann was living in Lord Street, Preston and married James Ingram, who was a botanist or surgeon. On the marriage certificate she recorded her age as being twenty-two and marital status as 'spinster'. In 1860 James and Ann Eliza have their third son, William, in Sunderland. By the time of the 1861 census Ann Eliza was living with James's parents in Sunderland with their three sons. It does not appear that James is living at this address. The 1881 census records that Ann Eliza is re-married to Francis Birkett and lives in Ryhope, Sunderland. He is a coal miner from Scotland and is ten years her senior. Also present are four of her sons fathered by James, all described as stepsons of Francis. By the time of the 1901 census Ann is living in Hartlepool with her son Thomas Ingram and grandson Edward G. Ingram. She is 68 years old and is recorded as the head of the house. There are three other households of Ingrams in Hartlepool headed by Thomas (b.1846 in Ireland), James (b.1864 in Hartlepool) and Andrew (b.1878 in Hartlepool).
The birthplaces of her six known children and occassional census records suggest that she may have lived in the following places: I am not certain when Ann died but a death is recorded of a 79-year-old Ann Birkett in Mar 1910 in County Durham. As her last known address was in Hartlepool, County Durham in the 1901 census this has a good chance of being her. |
