BIOGRAPHY:
James was born in approximately 1828, the son of James and Hannah Ingram. He had at least two brothers, Luke and Matthew Ingram, and may have had sisters.

In the 1851 census he is recorded as being twenty years old and living with his parents, his aunt (his father's sister, Sophia Miller), his brother Luke and his wife Jane, his brother Matthew and his wife Margaret and his nephews, Thomas, Henry and Luke Ingram. In this census James is recorded as being a 'botanist' as is his father and his two brothers.

By May of 1852 James was living in Water Street, Preston and was marrying Ann Eliza Skirrow. He records his age as being twenty-four and his occupation of him and his father as 'surgeon'. The marriage was witnessed by a John Ingram so it may have been possible he had moved to Preston to live with a relative.

In 1860 James and Ann Eliza have their third son, William, in Sheriff Hill, Gateshead. James's occupation is recorded as being a 'botanist' again. By the time of the 1861 census Ann Eliza was living with James's parents in Sunderland with their three sons. It does not appear that James is living at this address.

The birthplaces of James's six children suggest that James may have lived in the following places:
1828 - County Durham, where he was born
1852 - Preston, Lancashire, when he marries
1853 - Burnley, Lancashire, where his eldest son, John Henry Ingram, is born
1858 to 1861 - County Durham, where his second and third sons were born
1862 - Gateshead, County Durham, where her fourth son, Jas, is born
1865 - Merrington, County Durham, where her fifth son, Septimus, is born
1869 - Sunderland, County Durham ,where her sixth son, Aurthur, is born

Twenty-three years later in 1883 when James's youngest known son, William, marries he records his father's occupation as 'traveller'. I don't know when he dies. I cannot find reference to James in the 1881 census so I am uncertain whether he is alive at this time.
