George Stephenson is hailed my most as the founder of the railway system, due to his invention of steam-driven locamotives, firstly the "Blucher" and secondly the more renowned "Rocket". For a long time I have been interested in ascertaining whether there is a link between the Stephensons of Newcastle, from which I am descended, and the world-renowned George Stephenson who invented his steam-powered locamotives in Northumberland. It is first important to note that no-one can claim to be a direct descendant of George Stephenson. He had two children; an unknown daughter and a son called Robert. His daughter died in childhood and therefore had no offspring. Robert, though becoming a well-renowned figure in his own right, never married and therefore had no offspring either. Therefore, any discussion of a relationship to George Stephenson revolves around establishing a connection to his brothers, sisters, cousins, uncles and aunts.
