Beliefs and Values

Beliefs and values affects very much how we interact with each other. They are the most invisible characteristics of human society yet these differences cause conflicts and wars. Participating in a political party or belonging to a religious group can provide oneself with great rewards but outside of those circles, in other social surroundings or within family, a person can get ostracized. People that are passionate about their beliefs are often intolerant of others (generalization).

First a few definitions.

We can define BELIEF as a durable convictions. One dictionary definition is: conviction of the truth of some statement or the reality of some being or phenomenon. Webster's dictionary has an interesting note: BELIEF and FAITH are often used interchangeably but BELIEF may or may not imply certitude in the believer whereas FAITH always does even where there is no evidence or proof.

We can define Values as: durable convictions that influence our attitudes, gestures, choices and decisions. Values can be as different as individuals: Respect for Authority & Law, Honor, Honesty, Hard Work, Responsible Caring, Religious Values.

And every society holds some values in common.
