General description:
Mashreq international roads have been introduced in 2001 but are not yet implemented. They form a network similar to European roads.
M: The M1 and M3 are motorways and the M5 has a motorway section but the M4 is an ordinary road. The M1 is the main north-south road between Halab (Aleppo) and the Jordanian border. The introduction of Mashreq roads may lead to changes in these numbers since they are also indicated with 'M'.
Single digit road numbers are used for main national roads. Route 1 is the coast road, roads 2, 3 and 4 are east-west routes increasing to the north and 5, 6 and 7 are north-south routes increasing to the east (but 7 is diagonal and crosses 2 and 5 at Dimashq (Damascus)). 5 is parallel to the M1 and some sections overlap.
N: Numbers beginning with the same digit are generally close together but there is no clear zone system. 2-d numbers are not more important than 3-d numbers.
