It's different everywhere, but it kinda goes like this:
Marshal: What are the legal areas to hit? What is the emergency stop
word?
Who can call it? What do you say when you are "dead"?
Fight Round 1- defense
You fight, but don't throw shots. They're looking for any actions that will result in your injury.
(I had one guy reflexively tuck his knee up almost to his chin when people attacked. Yikes!)
Fight Round 2- offense
You throw all the shots. They want to see if you are excessive or if
you are consistently throwing knee/wrist or groin shots.
(legal, but
VERY rude)
Fight Round 3- Tourney fight
This is where the guy jumps you and you call everything, good/light/skippy/ whatever.
They want to see that you don't buckle under pressure and/or forget the rules in a full-on fight.
Then it gets fun. The guy you are fighting, and the two marshals go
into a huddle.
You get to stand at a distance and watch.
Marshal 1: She good?
Marshal 2: I didn't see anything bad.
Fight Guy: Yeah, she's fine.
Marshal 2: Hey, did you see what Duke So-n-So was wearing last weekend?
Marshal 1: *snarf* think his wife made him wear it?
Fight Guy: *Whippy noises*
All: Har har har!
So you see them laughing about something and start sweating bullets. then they come over and say "Yeah, you're fine. Go fill out the paperwork."
Or they may say:
Marshal 1: She good?
Marshal 2: I really didn't like the way she knocked a dent in Fight Guy's helmet.
Fight Guy: Yeah, I'm still seeing double.
Marshal 2: Do you think she'll be all right, though?
Marshal 1: Maybe we should talk to her about the calibration and see if she can tone it down some.
Fight Guy: (passes out)
Then they will come to you and tell you what happened and why it isn't safe. The you just work on the issue and return to the same marshal (sign of respect) for a re-fight. (usually just a few more fight practices down the road.)
