Make A Web Page
In Just Five Steps!

Step 1. Create a Folder for your web pages.

Some might think this is unnecessary, but when one thinks of the great convenience of knowing where one has saved a newly created web page, then it becomes important. Before publishing a web page, one must be able to test it in a browser and see whether it is "working." To FTP the page to a web site, one must also know where it is saved in a computer. Besides, one cannot have one's web pages just lying around scattered all over one's hard drive. Putting them together in just one folder makes them easier to retrieve and to edit. Before even composing a web page, create a folder that will hold it.

Creating a New Folder in Windows

  1. Click on "Start" and then "Windows Explorer"
  2. On the Explorer Menu, click on "File" -- "New" -- "Folder
  3. Right click on the Folder and give it a name (by choosing Rename). Make a name that is descriptive, e.g. "mywebpages."

Step 2. Type in the contents of your web pages.

The Internet was made for information. Web pages must have content. People often think of how their web page should look like first and get so tied up with the concern for decorations and aesthetics that they forget the basic reason for which web pages are composed anyway. The second step is creating a web page is to type in your content. If you are creating web pages for news items or reports, it would be a good idea to have them pre-typed in a simple texteditor like Notepad (if you are a Windows user) and copy and paste them into Front Page or open them in Front Page as HTML

Opening a Text file in Front Page

  1. In Front Page, click on "File" -- "Open"
  2. Click on "Browse" and choose the File Type "Text Files"
  3. Click on the file that you wish to retrieve and choose "Open AS HTML"

MS Word documents and RTF files when opened in Front Page as HTML will come out as so much textual garbage.

Step 3. Format, Layout, Link and Decorate your web pages.

Once you have typed the content of your web page, you can now look at how it will appear:

Layout your web page. How would you like to arrange the content of your web page? Would you like it to look like a magazine, a simple document, a tabloid. How will your contents be arranged on a page? Where will you put the links to your pages?

Format your web page. Add colors, change fonts, emphasize your text.

Decorate your web page. Add graphics as background or as links. More on Adding Graphics>>

Link your pages. Once your pages are done, you can link them to one another. More on Linking Pages >>>

Step 4. Test your web pages.

Before publishing your web pages, test them with your web browser.

Testing Your Pages with Internet Explorer

  1. Click on the Internet Explorer icon on your toolbar
  2. On the browser's menu, click "File" -- "Open"
  3. Click on "Browse" to locate your file (it should have the Explorer icon) and highlight it with the mouse
  4. Click "Open"

If after Step 4 you are contented with your page, you can now publish it. If not, you may go back to Front Page and work over it again.
