The Chemistry Workshop Newsletter

April 13, 2009      Honors Chemistry        Mr. Polsinelli

Class Web Site www.geocities.com/LPolsi

Welcome to the THIRD week of the LAST marking period.

Last week we wrapped up our unit on gases.  Today & tomorrow, we will do a chapter review & have a two-day exam on Wednesday & Thursday.

Chapter 12 Test is Wednesday, 4/15 & Thursday, 4/16

Calculations & Fill-In/Explanations

Focus on the information presented in class and for homework

Be sure you can do all the calculations we have done in class!

Put on your thinking caps--This is a problem-solving exam!

On Friday, we begin Chapter 13 on the models of the atom.  We will learn about atomic structure, specifically, where electrons are in atoms.  This is a most important topic since, in chemical reactions, electrons are the objects traded back-and-forth between atoms and molecules.  In many ways, there is an opportunity to learn an awful lot of chemistry over the next few weeks.

I know we've been studying chemistry all year, so why do I say that?  Those students who keep their heads in the game over the next few weeks will begin to understand what it is that drives atoms or molecules to react with each other, why and how they react.  These principles carry through all aspects of inorganic, organic, and biological chemistry.  The progression through chapters 13-16 will open up a lot of eyes about how things work.  It's really an exciting journey!!!
