LOST, BUT NOT FORGOTTEN HOREHOUNDS SHIT:

RUNAROUNDS / HOREHOUNDS@ COGAN'S, NORFOLK APRIL 13TH, 2002

Cripes, why are all these shows going on right down the street from me? I appreciate the closeness but you know - a girl has gotta get out of her neighborhood every once in a awhile! Variety is the spice of life and I'm just not feelin' it right now! Down to Cogan's I go - feelin' pretty loose limbed from the beer I sucked down in a frenzy shortly before departing. Not too much goin on up at the bar which is pretty typical. Blah blah blah - shootin' the shit with folks-blah blah blah-the crowd starts filin' in-but wait-where are two thirds of the Horehounds? It's almost twelve when Josh and Ashley stumble on in to their own show. So the 'Hounds hop on stage and "Rock Out" the only way they know how! Most of their set I sat mesmerized by the drunken booty shakin' of Ashley's girlfriend (her name also happens to be Ashley! This freaky yet interesting!) who happened to be celebrating her birthday thus her sloppy state. I myself had no right to judge Ms. "Shake that Ass" on her BAC-I had sucked down more than my share of Beast (to quote an actual Horehounds lyric, "I drink the beast/ because it costs the least/ but it still gets me fucked up")and Ice House and it was only shortly past midnight. Then I had to deal with a very drunk Vic Demise-who kept referring to me as his "new editor" to anyone that sat down next to him long enough! After a short pause those hard workin', shotgun wieldin', pickin' and grinnin' Carolina folks the Runarounds stepped up to the battle lines. Seein' this show made me realize that I hadn't listened to their record in a very long time! Sam kept yellin for them to play some AC/DC-but to no avail! Instead we got Bowie, as Sam stated above. This ain't no backwoods inbred hick shit, either! I mean yeah, so they got LONG hair but is that really indicative of one's sound? Some people seem to think so and that's pretty damn lame.

APOSTLES / HOREHOUNDS / DIRTY FINGERS @ CRUZERS SAT. FEB 15TH, 2003

BY MZ. HOLLY

Alright, okay. So I've been waitin for this damn show for over a month because lets face it, locally there just aint nothin goin on that's wortha fart here in Norfuck. I was at work and Sambone calls me up and breaks the news: "The Dirty Fingers ain't gonna be there. They don't wanna drivein the snow." Apparently a large snow/sleet storm raged in parts west of our area - namely Richmond and Charlottesville which is where the Fingers call home - and regardless of this band's claim to be rock and rollers and general non law abiding citizens this weather wuss out on their behalf will be held against them. I think Thee Apostles were pissed that they got beat to the punch about bailing on the show! Usually they wuss out!

Any how - so me and Sammy git on up to thee shew and the only person there was Witt ("I'm playing with the Fingers," he claimed. Always thelast to know, aren't you?) who seemed a little more concerned with runningup the tab of the band that didn't show up and harassing me than getting a job like the rest of us but hey this is just the angry ex-girlfriend talkin here. Thus began my drinking for the evening. Close to eleven, who should come strolling in but Mr. Scotto Blotto of the Faggot Fingers! How can the guitarist for a band show, but not the other three members?! TELL ME!

The Junior Ess Ess took to the "stage" and rocked out a killa set, plowin thru original tunes like "RNR Reputation" and covas like "Little Willy" by the Sweet and "Caught with the Meat in Your Mouth" by tha Dead friggin Boys. By far the strongest tune of the night was the Stones-y blues of theSambone Lopez penned tune, "Gold Digger". A general tightening of the rhythm section really helped their sound - mad props to bassist J-dove anddrummer Richie Rich for keepin it on the real tip. Sam's stage banter for thenight (a veiled tribute to the Stooges "Metallic KO" LP) summed it up : "Hey you guys paid four bucks, and we're makin' eight!". To quote James Hetfield (He is proverbial hero among the filippino populace. This was ascertained by the number of times Metallica is played over the stereo system in the filippino owned Cruzers), this is "Sad, but true"!

So then it wuz time for Norfolk's most economically challenged band (Man, you guys can't even afford fuckin straps for your guitars! Never have I seen a band utilize duct tape so efficiently), thee Apostles! Oh yeah, you name it they played it : "Action", "One More Time","Youre Killing Me" and two Johnny T. covers, "Seven Day Weekend" and "Born to Lose"! I really wanted to hear em do "Suspicious Minds" by the King namely to hear drummer G-Wiz do the stellar back up vocals. I am outraged by its absence from their set list and the only way to get me to shut up about it is to ply me with liquor! Also worth mentioning is the fact that bassist Darbe got a hair cut, guitarist Eric grew a beard, and they had Billy post Strap Ons on 2nd geetar.

So, in a nutshell, fun was had most of the night by all (except Witt who had to pay his own tab for a change)! Thanks goes out to Darbe for gettin a trim,Sammy for givin me a ride to the bar, and Ken for buying me some beer. No thanks to the Faggot Fingers (except Scott) for being wussies and bailing.

USED TO BE WOMEN (FORMERLY KNOWN AS THE TINGLERS) & THE HOREHOUNDS @ CHICHO'S, VA BEACH MON. JANUARY 7TH, 2002

Attended by Mz. Holly

Oh yeah, FREE ADMISSION Monday at Cho's! If I have to see the fuckin Horehounds one more time, I swear to god I'll kill them.....just kidding guys. Actually, this was the first time I'd seen them since the ousting of guitarist Witt about two months ago. Man, Sambone is pretty funny (or at least he thinks he is ) when he's drunk. And to think - he almost gave booze up! If you are hungry for 50's style rock and roll about chicks and beer then your appetite will most definitely be fulfilled by the Horehounds. This threesome rocked the house with a couple of original tunes "She's All Mine", "One Handed Love Affair", and "Slicked Back Hair". Some new tunes in the set like two originals sung by bassist Josh and a cover of a Sam the Sham song handled by drummer Ash. Can someone please write some between song banter for Sambone - his needs some help! Next up was the Tinglers from Michigan - well, they used to be the Tinglers but now they wanna be called Used to Be Women. The story is such : the Tinglers started out as a six piece but half the band quit before this show. You know what? It didn't matter because they were still awesome. I'm not familiar with their material (yet) but the sound was very rhythmic and angular - my friend Gunther likened the sound to a crossing of the Stooges and the Stones - bluesy yet primitive. The boys had three more tunes to finish up with but Larry May ( lead screamer for the Candysnatchers who also happens to help coordinate these Monday showcases) had other plans. "You got one more - a tribute to Detroit" Larry intones on his mic. The band looks perturbed about this statement. "No, we got three man", they say in return. "No, one more for Detroit", Larry argues. He is drunk and giving the band shit, and as my friend Kim will explain to the band later, he only does this to get a reaction when he likes people. The band is pacing in circles while they try to figure out if Larry is serious or being an asshole. "We got three more...." the band starts to say only to be cut off abruptly. "NO!", screamed Larry, " GOD DAMMIT YOU MOTHERFUCKERS LISTEN TO ME! YOU GOT ONE MORE AND IT'S GONNA BE A TRIBUTE TO DETROIT! FUCK YEAH! DEEEETROOOOOIT!" This kind of crap went on for about five minutes. Then the band yelled "Shut up"at Larry. I wish some one had taped it - classic. So they played one song and left the stage - only to go back and play two more! As if that wasn't shitty enough, while they were playing their car got towed by those money hungry bastards out at the oceanfront. Poor guys.

NANCY AND THE KNOCKERS, HOREHOUNDS @ CHICHO'S, VA. BEACH MON. JAN. 28TH, 2002
Attended by Mz. Kim

It's Monday night 11 PM : the Rock and the Undertaker are battling it out on WWF Raw (Stevie's favorite show). We have to cut it off and get our butts down to Chicho's fast - so the Horehounds will have a bass amp to play on (Josh -their bass player- hocked his down at the ol' pawn shop). At Chicho's Larry May is on the mic yelling "Wher's Steve Baise?!". Larry and the microphone can prove a volatile combination if left unattended for too long a time - like a child molester in a room full of babies! My friend Jimmy says Larry's mouth is what keeps him coming back every Monday night. The Horehounds get right down to business. They seem a bit looser than I remember. Maybe we left them hanging around the bar a little too long. All the girls are right up front and the whole gang is here - except Hardcore Holly who has an early court date for wreck less driving from the Hellbenders show. Sambone is kickin ass with his new albino Moserite. Ashley sings a Flamin Groovies song ("You Tore Me Down") while playing drums. Josh knows how to walk the bass dog. Larry gets up to sing "She's the Witch" and it's another automatic hit! When Nancy and the Knockers hit the stage, all the girls evacuate except for one bald headed chick. They play a straight set of eight songs - including "Party Asshole" and "I Don't Give a Fuck". These two songs I know because they recorded them earlier that day at Steveland (Steve Baise's studio) and I got to hear them on the way to the show. They remind me of the Red Aunts, but probably because I don't get to hear any "real" girl bands that can kick ass any day!

THE HOREHOUNDS - "ROCK OUT WITH THE HOREHOUNDS" (NO CONTACT INFO)

Straight offa the Park Place street corner comes the sleazy ass/sexy/crazy/cool overdriven RNMFinR of Norfolks own, Sambone and the Borehounds - I mean Scorehounds - I mean Horehounds. You see, the key to the Hounds sound was that they NEVER (and when I say NEVER, I mean NEVER!) practiced! It wont PERFECT - but hey these guys werent trying to be QUEEN or anything - they were just in it for the free booze, corndogs, and five dollar cut from the door cover. So now I got a hold of this bootleg LP - bootleg only because no one will come through on distribution - that was recorded WAY back in November of 2 oh oh 1 and god damn, is it some great shit. The best tunes are "No Time For You" (a galloping number that cleverly re writes the time honored rock theme "if you dont wanna fuck me baby, then fuck off") and the spitfire schreeech of "Love It or Leave It". Special recognition goes out to Radio Birdman, Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs, and the Flamin Groovies with careful cova tune selections ("Death by the Gun", "Love Me Like Before" and "You Tore Me Down") along with other strong originals like "Slicked Back Hair" , "Shes All Mine", and "Rock Out!". This is some ballsy ass Devil Dogs style rock that puts 99.9% of the bands around here to shame. Will the Horehounds rise again? Perhaps, but only if that sponsorship from HUSTLER magazine comes thru

Why should we think that you are better than The Leg Hounds and The Horehounds, who are doing their own personnification of the Devil Dogs ? I've never heard the Horehounds, but I'm sure they're good. The Leg Hounds rule, even though I have gotten drunk and harrassed their singer in emails with crazy ramblings. I'm sure those guys hate the Devil Dogs comparisons, too. I know we do. The Devil Dogs are probably our favorite collective band, but Andy G. told me we don't sound like them that much. The thing is, people see our name and automatically assume Devil Dogs-clone, which is stupid. We love 'em and they're an influence, but anybody who listens to the record and doesn't memorize Big Neck's press release will get it.

By the way, there's a review of the Horehounds LP in the new Razorcake...a good one!:

RP AtAll 18: HOREHOUNDS

Wow! Alright!! Another great east coast power trio that knows it's DEVIL DOGS, and struts around like it's got Andy G's cock and Steve Baise's nuts swingin' from it! Great solid catchy blasts of pure rocknroll for tainted minds like ours. Just when you think you've heard a great rebound-sex song, "The Ex-Sex Thing (is the next best thing)" sets you straight and locks in at 'classic' status. Turn your ass right around and find this platter at undergroundmedicine.com! (rod)

Horizontal Action #10

Basic 4/4 rock in the time-tested and mother-approved NEW YORK DOLLS/HEARTBREAKERS vein-or even ELECTRIC FRANKENSTEIN, if you wanna get personal. Oh YeahEon the flip, is a little faster and grabbier than the a-side offerings, and more my kettle of fish. The HOREHOUNDS are here for you if you're needin' 'em.

MRR - (JH)

"No Time For You" starts off like a snotty DEAD BOYS tune, but quickly moves into a DEVIL DOGS inspired offerring (not surprising since Crazy Stevie stokes the keys on the tune). Actually, that whole Devil Dogs vibe runs throughout the disc, although they are a little tougher not nearly as suave. If The Devil Dogs weren't constantly getting laid (which they were...it's a fact), they probably would've sounded like this. Not too shabby. (MC)

Amp Magazine
Some of you Nawfuckians and other fuckfaces in general out there with muy bueno taste should be aware of Head Hound Sambone Rock 'N' Roll Motherfucker from his stint in Big Bobby And The Nightcaps. An excellent hybrid of The Pretty Things and The Real Kids, the 'Caps kept my pitcher pouring in at least five venues that are now defunct. Reassuming the role as a guitar great, Sam has added lead vocals to his repertoire in the 'Hounds. Along with bassist Josh and drummer Ash (who once was behind the kit for Buzz-Oven, if you can belee that), the band's three cuts here offer the controlled power of Radio Birdman, the sleaziness of The Devil Dogs (Steve Baise produced this slab), and the spare-change riffing of John E. Thunders. The Ex-Sex Thing (Is The Next Best Thing)Eis, in the words of Sambone, about fucking your ex-girlfriend.EOh YeahEcould be an invitation of sorts, but No Time For YouEis certainly RSVP for stay the hell away. Rod Stewart once sang his thoughts concerning mornings; The HoreHounds wake up to a similar alarm clock.

(No Wave Fanzine)

The Horehounds are a Johnny Thunders obsessed (or maybe a Mullens obsessed nowadays...) rock nEroll group with all the classic licks and chords that Johnny Thunders obsessed people dig on. If Chuck Berry had a nickel for every guitarist who ripped off his guitar playinEhe woulda been a fuckinEking! Too bad you cant copyright that shit... well... then punk rock would have never existed, right...? The Horehounds! KeepinEthe tradition alive! (blankgeneration.com)

blankgeneration.com <http://www.blankgeneration.com>

Three track blaster the ex-front man of Big Bobby and the Nightcaps. Produced by Steve Baise it has a great Devil Dogs feel, but it is no copycat band for sure. You definitely get a little mid-seventies rock ala New York Dolls as well. The shining track "The Ex-Sex Thing" is as catchy as all hell. Hook laden tracks with rather un-PC lyrics will appeal to all you real rockers.
