About Faye

Moment of Exasperation

1996, came the year that seemed to act as a link to better things to come. In 1996, Faye released her last full album under Cinepoly. "Exasperation". The album Faye is most proud of. The concept of the album and directorship was all Faye's. She composed all tracks, sought her own musicians, recorded and produced the entire album in Beijing. This was indeed Faye's most personal and creative piece of work to date.

But, what is special about this album to her listeners is that 4 out of 10 tracks are without lyrics. Faye performed the songs with her blend of vocal sounds, beautifully, sometimes, it sounded as if she was singing in her own language, and listening to the album allowed you to intrude into her world. Credit in this album must also be given to Dou Wei and Zhang Ya Dong who made it all possible for Faye to present her music and for us to experience it.

In late 1996, it was confirmed that Faye had married Dou Wei and was expecting a child. Everyone was happy and excited. Media. Fans. Media and media. Everyone was exasperated. Media was exasperated because they can't get enough, the celebrity side was probably exasperated because of their efforts. The fans hardly knew Faye Wong who didn't like to speak much.
I am Faye Wong.

Winter, Friday morning January 3rd 1997. Dou Jing Tong was born in Beijing via Caesarian section. The proud parents of their little bundle of joy kept the baby away from the press. It was only when Jing Tong was 10 months old, that everyone caught a glimpse of her when Faye was in HK for a performance.

26th May 1997, Faye Wong signed a 55-songs contract with EMI. Faye seemed happier or rather, more out-spoken, and slowly relented when faced with questions that were previously deemed too personal. The media tension and miscommunication that were built up over the years seemed to ease a little after the birth of Baby Tong Tong.

Somehow, we got to see more of Faye. In print, on television, over the radio, live at music festivals and gigs. Much has changed. Faye was now more 'accessible'. We got to understand Faye from a distant. More smiles for a start, more warm than cool. More laughter, more silly moments and funny gestures. Just tickles. How is it possible, but has it been mentioned that Faye has also grown prettier? Her face is just a cheery radiance! Happiness showered upon everyone J

In 1997, Faye Wong also became the first female presented with the Billboard Award for "Most Popular Asian Singer".
Simplicity is Most Romantic

1998, Faye held her first album release conference in Japan for the album "Sing & Play". Japanese fans got to see Faye, bridging their distance and bringing the region closer together. With much anticipation, Faye kicked off her 2nd concert tour, "Song Tour" in Guangzhou, this series went on for 6 months.
Mid 1999, after the concert tour, Faye's and Dou Wei's marriage end. Still, all is well. In recent years, Faye speaks with more enthusiasm than ever, her prudence may be offensive to some, but quite easily forgotten. Her adorable nature and girlish appeal, are exposed, her seriousness when talking about her child and work, unreserved chattering about herself?aye has become quite an ease for interviewers.
Katie Chan, Faye's long-time manager had said that Faye's success is a miracle. Why? Obviously Faye has the talent, enthusiasm and looks. Yet, it is simply because Faye has always been introverted, less out-spoken person with Beijing-girl ideals and her simplicity was not seen to suit the expectations of the HK music industry. Faye succeeds because she sees her role in this game for the purest reason: her love for music, her love for singing. Also, innately blessed with good vocals and an interest to experiment, what else could hinder her to become the Faye Wong today?

As we listen to her music, her interviews and as time goes by, we begin to understand. Hopefully she will understand us as well. Other than as a career, Faye is simply doing all these for her love of music and has gone through so much to have control over her work. We rave and gush over little things, sometimes expressing constructive criticism about Faye, but?timately, we loVe and appreciate what Faye has to offer. What's Faye's appeal to us? Hmm?as with her music, that's very personal. J
