Judy, Maureen, Kathy and me...we've been friends now for going on 40 years. And it seems like just yesterday we were cruising the Dairy Queen looking for love. We were inseparable...we shared clothes and beauty tips, secrets and dreams. The only thing we never shared were our men. I remember Maybelline mascara (the kind you had to spit in to get it just right), the smell of Aqua net hairspray in the bathroom at Ludini's Skating Rink, and picking everyone up for school in my old peach and white 1958 chevy...we were always running late, and more times than not, we ran out of gas before we got to Fair Park, and would have to call Daddy to bring some. I remember twisting at the CYO dances, all the slumber parties, the times we went out to eat and everyone had to chip in for my share because I was always broke...Lake Bistineau in the summer scoping out the guys from Barksdale, dressing up in our suits, hats and gloves and riding downtown on the trolley. Maureen was the cynic, Kathy and I the emotional ones, and Judy was the free spirit. We have been together through the good and the bad times, through each other's marriages, kids, and divorces, through moves and career changes, and God willing, we'll be together until we leave this earth. The girls of the 60's are now sneaking up on the senior ladies of the millinium. One thing remains constant, though, and that is this fact: men may come and go in your life, but girlfriends last forever. |
