Sweet Kisses: Chapter 9
I awoke to a loud banging sound. I would have jumped out of the bed, but I was too tired from the night before, so I rolled over, sliding my arm across Lizzy's bare stomach and wrapping it around her sides. I scooted closer to her and closed my eyes, determined to get more sleep.
"Hello? Nicky?" The voice that was now coming from inside the house sent chills up my spine. If it's who I think it is
"Nicky?" I kept my eyes shut, not wanting to have to deal with what was coming. I stole a look at Lizzy but she was still dead asleep. She rolled over in my arms, burying her face in my chest. I kept holding her tight.
I heard a slight knock on the bedroom door. My skin was immediately covered with goosebumps. I shut my eyes tight, listening to the opening of my bedroom door. The carpet must have covered the footsteps because before I knew it, the voice was yelling in my ear.
"Nickolas Gene Carter! I can't believe you! You're sleeping with another woman!" I was wide awake now and so was Lizzy.
"Clarisse Ann!" I faked my shock to see her. "Why are you here?"
"Duh! I only left a message on your answering machine telling you I was coming for a visit. I figured that since you never answered my calls you would at least open the door, then I remembered that you had made a spare key for me
get the hell out of that bed!"
"You get the hell out of my house! Out of my life!" I was mad now. Lizzy had moved to the other side of the bed and had the covers wrapped tightly around her. "Didn't you get it?! I was home when you called but I never answered any of your calls! I never returned your calls! Didn't you get the fucking picture?!"
She stood there with her mouth open, shocked that I had even thought to speak out against her. "You will do as I say," she said in a stern, quiet voice. "and you will get your ass out of that bed, get some clothes on that whore of yours and kick her ass out on the street! Then you will explain to me why you are sleeping with another woman while we are still dating! Got it?"
"Nick, she's your girlfriend?" Lizzy's hurt voice made my inside's do a flip-flop.
I turned towards her. "Baby, I can explain
"
"She," Clarisse Ann pointed an angry, shaking finger at Lizzy. "Is not your 'baby'! I am, and I will always be your baby! Now do as I said!"
I fished around the bed for my boxers and put them on, then stepped out of the bed to face Clarisse Ann. "You are a bitch who likes to boss people around. Get the hell out of my house before I call the cops on you. You drive away like a good girl and never talk to me, call me, or even think of me again, you got that?" Against my 6 foot 1 frame, Clarisse Ann looked tiny and she sensed it.
She stormed out of the room, but not before shouting at Lizzy, "Honey, don't think that you're the only one that he's slept with before! I was the first and by far the most pleasuring! You are just some dirty skank that he picked up off the street so that he could get his fill and then dump your fat ass! It'll happen!"
When I heard her car screech away, I turned slowly to face Lizzy. She was sitting on the other end of the bed, glaring at me through tear-filled eyes.
"Lizzy, I can explain
"
"I don't wanna hear it right now, Nick." She swiped at her eyes angrily. "I thought you were better than that. I loved you. I gave everything of me to you!" She looked away from me. "Will you please leave me? I'm going to get dressed. Then I'll be packing."
"But Lizzy, you just got here! You're supposed to stay here for the summer! Lizzy, please, let me explain!"
"You don't need to, Nick. I'm pretty sure I already understand." She pointed at the door and I slowly left the room.
I walked slowly to the living room, flopping down on the couch. I covered my face with my hands and let the tears come. I couldn't believe that this was happening! I couldn't just sit here and watch it happen either. But then again, I couldn't make Lizzy listen to me. I sat up quickly when I heard my bedroom door open. I jumped up and ran to her.
"Lizzy, please
" I reached out for her arm to stop her from going into the guest bedroom and packing. She jerked her arm away.
"Just stop, Nick." The anger in her voice had vanished as she choked out the words. She turned and silently went in the guestroom. I followed, sitting myself on the edge of the bed, not saying a word. She just moved around me, dressed in my boxers and my undershirt. I watched as she gathered all of her clothes from the dresser drawers, dumping them into her suitcase, not bothering to fold them. She made her way to the closet and took everything off of the closet rack.
"Why are you here?" The suitcase was sitting next to me, Lizzy was standing in front of it trying to stuff everything in there. She looked at me when she asked the question.
"I don't want you to go. I want you to listen to me and then stay with me." I didn't reach out for her, knowing that if I did so, she'd move away and the conversation would stop.
"Nick, listen to me. I have to go. I can't listen to you and I can't stay with you anymore," She slammed the suitcase lid shut, zipping it up. She picked up the suitcase and moved out of the room, making her way to the guest bathroom. I followed.
She gathered everything that belonged to her, stuffing it into a small travelbag. She shoved that into a duffel bag, along with all of her shoes. I was standing in the doorway to the bathroom, blocking her exit.
"Elizabeth, if you never do anything for me again please do this. Listen to me now. That's all I'm asking."
"No." She said simply. "Now please move out of the way." I didn't move. "Move, dammit!" I moved out of the way and watched as she made her way to the front door. She placed all of her bags next to the door.
"If you're really leaving, how are you going to get there? And where are you going?"
"I've already called my sister to come and pick me up. She's going to let me stay with her for a while." She opened the door and then picked up her bags, turning to face me. "Good-bye, Nick." Her voice held no expression, no emotion. She walked out the door, set her bags down, and then shut the door behind her. I leaned against the wall, not knowing what to do. I was surprised when the door opened again.
"Don't try to follow me, don't even come out here when I leave. You'll only make it worse." She shut the door again, leaving me alone in the silent, empty house. I slid down the wall and sat crouched down on the floor, my head in my hands.
It was about thirty minutes before I heard a car in the driveway and muffled voices from behind the door. I gave Lizzy the space that she needed, but I peeked through the window, quickly jotting down the license plate number before the car drove away.
I looked down at the paper. I wasn't sure if I would ever use it, but if I needed to, I
would.
