Sweet Kisses: Chapter 10
"She what?!" Brian asked, not believing what I had just told him.
"Clarisse Ann came back, saw me and Lizzy sleeping together, bitched me out, bitched Lizzy out, then finally left after I exploded." I ran a hand through my hair. About five minutes after Lizzy left, I had called Brian over to my house. "She wouldn't even let me explain. She just packed up and left."
"Shit, Nick. You got problems." I glared at Brian. "Sorry, but it's the truth, man. The only thing I can tell you to do is try calling her."
"I don't know the number."
"Do you know where she's staying?"
"Sort of." I shrugged. "All I know is that she's staying with her sister for a while."
"Do you know if her sister's married or not?"
"I've never even heard of her sister before." I pulled the small slip of paper from my pocket. "All I have is this." I handed it to Brian. "It's her sister's car license plate number."
"What are you gonna do with it?"
"See if I can get the address and phone number of her sister from the internet. But when she left, she said if I followed her, it'd only make it worse." I had been pacing the living room, but now I collapsed in a chair. "Should I do it anyways?"
"You can't do it now. We have an awards show to go to." Brian checked his watch. "You've got three hours before we have to be there, not counting the hour it's gonna take to even get there, plus you have to add in makeup time, hair time, and clothes time. So in other words, you've got about forty-five minutes to shower and get on the internet and then hop in a car and get your butt to the awards." Brian got up. "I've gotta go man. Whatever you do, I hope you get back together." He gave me a quick hug before he left.
It didn't take me long to get logged onto the internet and look up the license plate number. I quickly jotted down the number and address and then logged off. I went to the phone and punched in the number. My stomach was twisted in knots while waiting for the phone to be answered.
"Hello?" A voice answered. I noted that it wasn't Lizzy's.
"Is Lizzy over there?"
"She doesn't want to talk right now. She's not accepting any phone calls."
"It's an emergency!" I had to talk to her! I pleaded with her sister. "Please, just let me talk to her for a second. I swear, I'll be off in less than five minutes." I heard her sister sigh.
"Fine, hang on." I couldn't help the smile that covered my face.
"Hello?" From the one word that she spoke, I could tell that she had been crying.
"Lizzy?"
"I don't want to talk to you."
"Wait! Don't hang up!" I waited for a minute and when I didn't hear anything, I asked, "Lizzy?"
"Hurry up. I'm hanging up in three minutes."
"Okay! Um, I was wondering, if, um, if maybe, um, if maybe it was alright to take you to the MTV Video Music Awards tonight. Please, Lizzy. Just give me one more chance."
I waited nervously for her answer.
"Nick, I
" I heard her breathe deeply. "I don't think that's a good idea."
"Oh, Lizzy please!" I begged, not caring that my voice was high pitched and whiny. I took a deep breath and tried to calm down. "Lizzy, you know that I love you."
"I'm not so sure anymore."
"I love you."
"I don't know, Nick
"
"Okay, well if you're not going to go, will you watch them?"
"I was planning to anyway."
"Okay. Well, bye." She hung up without saying good-bye.
I hung up the phone and hopped into the shower.
*That night at the MTV VMA's*
"And the award for Viewer's Choice goes to
" the envelope was opened. "The Backstreet Boys!" There was cheering as we all got up and exchanged hugs. Even though we had won a major award, I still wasn't cheered up.
I shook hands with the announcer and waited my turn to say my thank-you's. Before I stepped up to the microphone, I shot up a silent prayer that Lizzy was still watching.
"Hey guys!" I smiled into the audience. "I just wanna thank, first, the Lord. And I also wanna thank the fans, because without you guys, none of this would have happened. Thank you guys! Baby, I still love you!" I looked into the camera and blew a kiss, then backed up for one of the other guys to have his chance at the mic.
Brian elbowed me. "That was a good move." He flashed a smile. I just hoped that Lizzy was watching and that she thought the same thing that Brian did.

"Nick, I saw it. I get the picture. But please, don't push this. Just leave me alone for a bit. If you push me, you'll mess up everything. Please, no more calls. Bye." My heart went up in my throat when I heard the message that Lizzy had left on my answering machine. I listened to the next one.
"Oh, baby! I still love you too! I love you so much! It's okay that you slept with that hoe! It's okay! Call me! Love you! Kisses!" I deleted that one as soon as it was over. I shook my head. Clarisse Ann just didn't get it.
But I knew that I couldn't wait for Lizzy. I had to set things straight now. I slipped under the sheets of my bed and laid awake planning everything out in my mind. I rolled over and remembered how just 24 hours earlier, Lizzy had been in that big empty space in the bed. I closed my eyes tight and hoped that everything went well
tomorrow.
