If
You Knew What I Knew:
Chapter 5
Kevin
“Hey, you guys?” I knocked on the
open door of Nick’s dressing room. He
and Brian had set up a TV and were playing a game of Playstation Road Racing on
it.
“Wuz up, Kev?” Nick called back to me without turning
around.
“Hey, Kev!” Brian’s greeting was exactly like Nick’s-
I was acknowledged without actually being looked at.
“Hey you guys,” I started nervously.
“Can I talk to you guys real quick?”
“Hey, man,” Brian said, steering his car away from a
brick wall. “If it’s about us
getting ready for the show, we’ve got that taken care of.” He tossed his
head in the direction of a clock resting on top of chair.
“We’ve got the alarm set to an alternative station to sound at ten
minutes till the show.”
I laughed. Leave
it to Brian and Nick to play video games until just minutes before the big show.
“You guys know that this is going to be a big one,
right?”
“Yeah,” Brian answered.
“MTV’s gonna be here.” Nick flashed me a smile.
“I have to put all the charm on tonight!”
“Yeah, well I gotta make sure that I actually dance my
best.” Brian said. “You guys
know how much I hate dancing.”
“But for serious now,” I had a reason for coming into the
dressing room and I was going to get my point across.
“Can I talk to you guys?”
“Yeah, yeah, we know,” Nick’s voice mocked my own.
“We have to all get serious about our work and still be able to have
fun on stage. That’s the whole
point of this, right?” He and Brian exchanged glances and burst out laughing.
“So what!” I had often said that exact thing to the guys. “I like to be professional!”
The guys turned back to their game.
“Hey, that’s not what I wanted to say to you guys.”
I still hadn’t made my point.
“Well, sorry, but you’ve already interrupted our game
long enough.” Nick and Brian were still racing.
“You guys haven’t even paused that stupid thing!
What if I had something really important to say?
What if it involved life and death?” I was only a little peeved but I
said it to make them think that I was really p.o.ed.
“Nothing you say ever has to do with life and death!”
Brian laughed and turned his full attention to his game.
“Well, I said ‘what if’.”
Neither of them was paying any attention to me anymore.
“Fine,” I got up and walked to the door.
“I’m leaving.” I walked through the door and out into the hallway.
I turned around and poked my head back in the doorway.
“You guys better be ready for the show tonight!”
Neither of them even acknowledged my presence.
