If
You Knew What I Knew:
Chapter 15
Brian
I sat on a park bench, dressed
in black. Yeah, it made me look
really suspicious, but I just didn’t want any fans to recognize me.
I saw AJ walking toward me with his cell phone in his hand. I shoved mine back into my pocket and got up to meet AJ.
I was going to do what I had come here to do no matter how hard it was.
I walked straight up to AJ, not saying a word.
He didn’t say anything either. I
walked back to the bench where I had just been sitting and sat down, AJ sitting
beside me.
“I need to talk to you about what happened.” I looked at
him, my eyes starting to water. I
looked away and forced the tears from my eyes.
I didn’t want to cry now. I
just wanted an explanation.
“Brian, I’m so sorry!
I wanted to talk to you too, but I didn’t know what to say, so I went
to a diner to try to think things over and...”
“Shut up, your rambling.” I made my tone even.
I didn’t want to show any emotion at all.
“Just tell me all that you know.”
“Okay, here goes. Howie
came up to me the other day, mad as hell, and told me that he had overheard you
and Nick talking about what had happened at the park with Nick and Polly.
I don’t remember exactly what happened between the two of them but I do
remember that Howie said that Nick ended up killing her in some sort of freak
accident.” He licked his lips nervously, took a deep breath, and went on.
“Then he told me of this plan that he had to get back at Nick. At first, you know, I didn’t think much of it until I saw
the look in his eyes when he told me he wanted to kill Nick.
He asked me if I would go along with it.
Brian, I’m so sorry! I
just thought that he would never actually do it, so I said yes.
Brian, I’m so sorry!”
“There’s one part of your story that doesn’t match up
with something that I heard. When
you turned on the light, you kept saying, ‘He didn’t wait’.” I guess he
knew it was a question because he then supplied the answer.
“Well, he didn’t wait.
I meant two things: he didn’t wait for Nick to get his own trouble
without our help, and he didn’t wait for me.
As bad as that sounds...Brian I am so sorry.” AJ’s voice was so
sincere and his eyes were mournful.
“Alright,” I said, feeling a little at peace.
“It’s alright between us. We’re
cool.” I stuck my hand out to shake AJ’s hand but he hugged me instead.
“Now what?” He asked.
“We meet with Kev. We
still have to deal with Nick’s burial. And
with his murderer.”
