Five Men, A Kid, And A Baby

~~*Chapter Three*~~

AJ rolled over in his bed and rubbed his eyes, taking a quick peek at the clock. It was only seven. He groaned and rolled over to go back to sleep, but something was telling him not to. He got up, completely oblivious to the empty pallet that he walked by. He grabbed a towel and headed for the bathroom. He turned on the water and then it hit him—Lexy and Ally were gone.

He ran back out and checked the bed. Not there. He looked everywhere—closets, under the bed, everywhere—and after searching the entire room, found nothing. He panicked, grabbed his keys and ran out of the room. He fought his way through the few fans that were mingling outside the hotel and ran to his car. He had already started the engine before his door was shut.

What the hell am I thinking, going after those two? He thought. I never wanted them in the first place! This is the perfect excuse to get rid of them! AJ drove madly out of the parking lot and frantically began searching the streets. I just can’t leave two little girls alone on the streets…

He turned the corner and pulled onto a major road. He drove slowly, looking closer at the shrubbery that lined the road. He shivered with horror when he saw Lexy, Ally in her arms, beginning to cross the major road without looking both ways. He sped to them, screeching to a halt just in front of them. He jumped out, running to them, ignoring the honking cars behind him.

“What the hell are you doing?” AJ yelled, grabbing Lexy’s arm.

“I’m finding Mommy!” She screamed back, tears streaming down her face.

“Your mother left you! She’s not coming back. You’re stuck with me whether you like it or not!” AJ pulled her along the road towards his car, but she dragged her feet against the asphalt and Ally began to cry with fear.

AJ knelt down in front of the small child and grabbed her by the shoulders roughly. His face was just inches from hers.

“Alexa, where else do you have to go but to me?” He shouted over the noise. Her face suddenly became solemn as the small child realized that she had no one. “Now, let’s take you and Ally back home.” His tone was gentler.

Lexy nodded and grabbed Ally’s hand. The three of them walked cautiously back to the car and hopped in silently. Lexy strapped herself and Ally into the front seat and pulled the seatbelt taught. She stared down at her hands and let the silent tears fall. AJ looked over at her. If I were in her position, I would have run away too. He reached over and patted the little girl’s leg. She looked at him and he smiled slightly, hoping she would realize that he was apologizing.

“Are you hungry?” He asked. She nodded feverishly. “How about we all go and eat breakfast at IHOP?”

Lexy’s face broke into a huge grin. She loved big breakfasts. It was the biggest whole-hearted smile that AJ had ever seen, especially from such a small child that has had to endure so much. He smiled back and turned back into the lane, driving towards the IHOP.
