Five
Men, A Kid, And A Baby
Story by Daisy
~~*Chapter Two*~~
Normally being alone with two young girls wouldn’t have scared AJ.
Normally he would have been having the time of his life. But this time it was
different. These two young girls were way younger than he usually liked and they
were…his. AJ shuddered at the
thought of having children. He’d never wanted them and he still didn’t now,
but he was thrown awkwardly into the situation and had no way to back out. At
least until tomorrow.
“So,” AJ said, clapping his hands loudly. The girl cowered in the
corner of the room and shook while she cried. AJ sighed heavily and approached
her. “My name is AJ. Your mom left you here with me. You’re name’s Alexa
right?”
She nodded. “Lexy.” She looked at her sister and pointed. “That’s
Ally.”
“What’s your mom’s name?”
“Alexandra.”
“Did she have a last name?”
“Mommy.” She said plainly, telling AJ that she had no last name.
“Do you have a picture of your mom?” She nodded, her eyes brightening
and dug around in her backpack. She pulled out a torn photo and handed it to AJ.
“She gave it to me so I could give it to you.” She pointed to the
torn edge. “That was where Mommy’s boyfriend used to be.”
AJ nodded, studying the picture. He recognized the face. Or rather, he
recognized the woman’s smile and eyes. He had met her at one of his many
concerts and they had a week fling together. A few years later when they played
her city again, they met up and had another fling. They
are my kids, AJ thought suddenly, his face growing pale. What
the heck am I going to do with two kids on the road? They’ll never make it
through all that we do!
He looked away from the photo and noticed that the two girls were gone.
He turned around, catching a glimpse of Lexy’s long hair just before it ducked
into the bathroom. He walked over, pushing the bathroom door open slowly. She
stared at him with wide eyes.
“Don’t follow me in here!” She pushed the door shut and AJ listened
to it lock. He walked over to the bed and sat down, rubbing his temples with his
palms. He moved his foot and kicked Lexy’s backpack. He picked it up and began
to rifle through it to see just what they had.
There were two changes of clothes for each girl, plus an extra pair of
shoes. There were only two diapers and no wipes. In the very back, contained in
a folder, were all of their legal documents, birth certificates included.
“Alexa Lynn Maverson.” AJ read, then pulled out the other. “Alexis
Gayle Maverson.” Such pretty names for pretty girls. It was only then that he
realized why Alexandra had named them that way. She loved his name and her name
together, both starting with “Alex”, so both of her children’s names also
began with “Alex”. She was obsessed, he thought.
Just as he heard the bathroom door open, AJ threw down the backpack and waited as Lexy pulled Ally from the small room. They stared at each other, both not knowing what to do.
“I guess you’re tired.” AJ started, getting up from the bed. “How
about you go to sleep?” Lexy nodded hesitantly and AJ pulled some extra sheets
from the closet. He made a messy pallet on the floor and placed two pillows
down, sacrificing his own. He stared down at the jumbled makeshift bed and
shrugged. It was the best he could do.
He watched silently as Lexy got underneath the covers and patted the spot
beside her for Ally. Ally crawled over to her and lay down on top of the sheets.
He watched the two of them, knowing that whatever they had been through before
must have been hard. They looked like they were used to these kinds of
conditions. He walked over and shut off the light, leaving only a lamp to light
his way. He walked quickly to the bathroom and changed into his pajamas. He’d
never gone to bed this early. It was barely eight o’clock. He walked silently
to the bed, noticing that Lexy and Ally were both asleep, and turned out the
light.
