Chapter 13: Don't Want You Back

Brian

"Melanie?" I called. I quickly searched the room. She was nowhere inside the room. I even checked under the hospital bed and inside the hospital closet.
When I was satisfied that she wasn't there, I shut the door to AJ's room and turned the lock. I looked down the hall to see Melanie running into the elevator.
I went over to the heart-monitor and plugged it back in. To my relief, AJ's heart rate read normal. I sat down next to him. I reached for his hand.
"AJ?" I choked on the words. I couldn't help crying. "Oh, man, I feel so bad for what happened. It's my fault that Melanie tried to hurt you in the first place. I'm so sorry." I let go of his hand and it fell limp across the railing. I began to sob. It had been a long week.
"Brian!" I jumped out of the chair and looked over at the door. There stood my best friends, Kevin, Nick, and Howie. A rush of relief fell over me. I was about to walk over to them when I stopped dead in my tracks.
"What the fuck is she doing here?!" I shouted, pointing at Melanie.
"Well, we caught her in the parking lot, trying to escape. Nick got your call and understood what was happening." Kevin had Melanie's wrist in a grip that she would never get out of, no matter how sharp her teeth were.
I fell into the chair with fatigue. I started crying again. I was so thankful that they believed me now.
"Frick, man, I'm sorry for trying to point fingers at you." Nick looked just like I felt.
"It's alright." I smiled and wiped my eyes.
At that moment, Melanie started screaming.
"No! No! You can't just let me fail like this! Please! Please let me kill him! I beg of you!" We all stood looking at her, shocked.
"Mother! Mother! I'm a slut! Mother, don't touch me!" Kevin let go of her arm. She threw herself to the ground and curled in a ball, screaming the whole time.
"What's the matter with her?" Kevin asked, bewildered.
"I don't know!" I looked at her. She screaming about something about mother don't and I'm a slut.
"What's going on in here?" A nurse had walked in the room. She looked down at Melanie.
"Come on, child." The nurse reached for her arm. Melanie screamed louder and slashed out at the nurse.
"Don't touch me! You can't take me back there! Mother! Mother made me this way! She was crazy too! Don't take me back there!" She stopped screaming and began crying. Another nurse ran into the room with a needle in her hand.
We all stood around, watching in confusion as the second nurse injected Melanie's arm. She suddenly became very quiet. The nurse rolled her over. She was out, sleeping like a baby.
"Would any of you boys know what this girl's name is? Where she's originally from?" The nurse looked at us.
"Her name is Melanie Livingston and she's originally from here, but she moved when she was ten and then moved back here this year." I told the nurse, still as confused as ever.
The nurses exchanged glances.
"Um, will one of you boys help us carry her out?" I volunteered. I picked her up, first from under her arms and then placing her in my arms, where her legs were draped over one of my arms.
"What happened in there?" I asked the nurse.
"Well, I think she's suffering from a case of insanity." The nurse looked at me. "Would you happen to know if her mother's name was Marlene?"
"Yeah, that's her name. Melanie doesn't talk about her much because she can't stand her mom."
"Neither could I." I looked at the nurse. "Well, there's a family history of mental illness and her mother was one of our worst cases. I think that Melanie was also admitted into our mental illness ward when she was younger. Yes, I'm positive that she was because I remember her being very reserved. She had a problem with being overly attached and some other factors that we weren't quite sure about. She left the hospital when she was about ten. Oh, here we are." The nurse led me into a room with a sign on it that said, "Psychology Ward".
My arms were starting to hurt and I was thankful when the nurse told me to put Melanie down on a bed. I shook out my arms. I looked around the room. I was surprised to see that three walls were padded. The fourth wall was a huge mirror.
"What's that for?" I asked, pointing to the fourth wall.
"It's a one way window. We can watch the patient without their knowledge. It's unbreakable so the patient can't hurt themselves."
The nurse led me back out of the room.
"I think she'll be in there for a while, I'm afraid. Was she your girlfriend." The nurse looked at me.
"Something like that." I had a feeling that I didn't care whose baby it was anymore. All I cared about was how AJ was doing.
"Do you think that AJ McLean in room 220 is going to live?" I prayed that he would.
"Well, I can't say." The nurse bit her lip. "I'm sorry."
I walked back to AJ's room in a blur. I was fatigued and yet I knew that I wouldn't sleep until I knew that AJ was better. If he ever got better.
