This dog is were it all began for me. My husband Denny had Pit Bull dogs all his life and noticed an add in the local paper for some reds. He had always fancied the red dogs, but never owned one. We went to look at this litter that Ronald Yeargain had produced. I found it somewhat interesting that Ronald's mother handled the actual showing and sale of these pups since Ronald was on the road traveling. In fact, according to Mrs. Yeargain, Ronald had only seen the pups a couple times.
As we approached the litter in the garage, they all came running our way. One little guy had a white snip, chest and toes and was in front. THAT was the one I wanted! $200.00 dollars later and we were on our way home with a cute little UKC pup.
At that time I had no idea about UKC or shows in general but knew a little about obedience training since my father had always taken his big dogs (the GSD and Dobs) to obedience class and I was always eager to the 'homework' with these dogs. We weren't looking for a show dog, just an obedient family companion. We did have his ears cropped and at about four months of age enrolled him in a 'behind the store' home obedience class. The instructor Joe DeBeck told me he thought Frazier was a little young and that he preferred them around 6 months of age, but we would see how he did. By the end of our 6 week course, Frazier graduated TOP of his class and was asked to come back as a demo dog for the next new class! I really enjoyed the training and my instructor felt this dog good enough to compete and encouraged us with some flyers of upcoming obedience matches.
We ended up at Legg Lake and felt completely lost in this park FULL of rings. We just watched this time, taking it all in. Someone suggested we subscribe to Bloodlines so that we could get information on upcoming shows.
In just a couple weeks the APBT club of Southern California was to host not only APBT's but eskies, obedience and a fun weight pull too! This was a big thing for us. Pregnant as I was, we loaded the truck and were on our way!! I managed to get Frazier entered in the puppy class and took a 3rd place!! Wow!! This was neat! I also liked the fact that I didn't have to lock my dogs up in those menacing looking boxes. I could just put him on a blanket and tell him down and he would stay. LOL! Yes, I was now on a quest to prove to others that this breed was not so bad, it was the owners who made them bad...blah blah blah...
It didn't take me long to discover those 'boxes' were to keep the dog's safe, not the people! Not to fear, I'd get one before our 'next' show ;-) On our way home we had to stop and show all our friends the little green 3rd place ribbon that our Frazier had won! We enjoyed watching the dogs pull that day too! It was exciting and competitive! The obedience ring seemed so confusing to me. Of course I didn't realize they did Utility first (what the heck is that?!?) and thought to myself "Boy, do I have a lot of work to do!" We were so proud of what our pup did earlier that day, but I still had the itch to try my hand at obedience, not just the beauty contest.
We watched the trial flyers closely and attended a couple matches for the sub novice division. I felt he was finally 'ready' (actually ME) and entered our first UKC obedience trial. Nancy Corbett was the judge that day. There were 7 dogs in my Novice 'A' class. When they announced a 'sudden death' run off, I had no idea what that meant. Much to my surprise, I was in the run off!! I had to go against the lady with the peach poodle (who also looked a LOT like her dog). To make a long story even longer, both dogs come into the ring together. The judge calls and the first dog to make a mistake is NOT the winner. WE BEAT THE PEACH POODLE!!! WOW, what a day! Not only did we earn a leg at our first trial, we won the a run off with the poodle, won first place in our class and more importantly met a VERY influential person who unknowingly helped shaped my ideas on training forever. Nancy Corbett was very encouraging of my goals with this dog and offered her assistance. Luckily she didn't live too far. I joined the same clubs she belonged to, CHAOS (California Handlers Obedience School) and PCOC (Pacific Coast Obedience Club)(Southern California's first UKC obedience club). I joined her beginning and advanced classes and learned so much. Nancy was a great training director for me because she pulled no punches. She wanted perfection, not only from the dogs performance, but also from the handlers. She was strict on her students to know and understand the rules and of course follow them according. Nancy was tough and I'm thankful for that ;-)
