Wireless speeds differ depending on the type of network your on, and the device that is installed in the system. The Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) created the standards for wireless networks. The standards are called 802.11, and where later expanded into 802.11a, 802.11b, and 802.11g. The first standard, 802.11, could only support a bandwidth of 2 Mbps. This can be considered slow for that fact that applications can not run well with such a low bandwidth. The next one, 802.11b, could handle 11 Mbps, equivalent to Ethernet speeds. Considering that this standard contains the same frequency as cordless phones and other appliances, there can be several items that will interfere. Vendors prefer this standard because of its low cost with good range. When 802.11b was being developed, 802.11a was also being produced. This standard was developed as an extension to the original 802.11, but did not gain the same fame as 802.11b. The cost of 802.11a is more, yet at a 54 Mbps it has been more popular with the businesses than elsewhere. The recent standard is 802.11g. This takes the speed of 802.11a, with the frequency range of 802.11b. The 802.11g standard also is backwards compatible with 802.11b. Currently, 802.11g has what it takes to start a wireless network.
