History of Services: 14 December 1934 Launched as passenger liner of German Norddeutscher Line as Scharnhorst. 1942 Planned by the Japanese Navy to use as troops transporter, but she was urgently converted into an aircraft carrier for the purpose of training new pilots. 1944 Underwent modification to increase anti-air battery. 17 November 1944 Hit by torpedoes from the submarine USS Spedefish in the Yellow Sea. |
