History of Services: June 1941 The JUNYO and HIYO were the passenger liners of Nippon Yusen Kaish. Both were converted into carriers after taken over by the Navy. July 1942 Commissioned and assigned to CarDiv 2, 3rd Fleet. October 1942 Battle of the Santa Cruz. HIYO's aircraft engaged US warship in the Guadacanal area, sank destroyer USS Meredith. But later on a fire broke out in the generator room. And she left the battle and returned to Turk for repairment. November 1942 Twice damaged by air raid at Turk. April 1943 Slightly damaged by air raid in Turk. ? Returned to Guadalcanal for escorting convoy and launched strikes against US shippings including the carrier USS Enterprise. June 1943 Hit by two torpedoes by submarine USS Trigger around Miyake Island. She went dead in water but was able to keep afloat. Towed by ISUZU in the next day and later repaired at Yokosuka. December 1943 Ferried aircrafts around Singapore, Saipan and Truk. 20 June 1944 Operation "A - GO" ~ Battle of the Marianas. Hit by two torpedoes from the aircrafts from USS Belleau Wood, which caused fire and went dead in water. Few hours later, explosions occurred and sank eventually. November 1944 Removed from the Navy List. |
