Chapter 3...

At the police station, the team was discussing about the arrival of the new physcologist, but not knowing it was Quin.

Hoi: I hope it is a girl. Someone young and very pretty.

Korean: Don’t hold your breath. I heard that she, or her, is the assistant dean in the physcology department of Hong Kong Hospital. Bound to be someone old. Hey, Fei Gor, what’s your guess? Someone old or young?

Fei: (in a bad mood because physcologists reminded him of Quin) Leave me alone. Don’t you people have anything better to do than gossip?

Gigi: (Whacked Korean on the head) Shut up, stupid. Anyway, I heard San Gor talking to her. Her name is Dr.Mon or Dr.Ming. Well, something like that. Let’s get the details from San Gor afterwards.
(Chi San walks in)

Gigi: Hey, San Gor. Who’s the new physcologist?

Hoi: Yeah, San Gor. Is it a girl? Is she (raised his eyebrows suggestively) pretty?

Chi San: (Evasively) No one you people know.
(He walked into his office and shut his door.)

Korean: What’s with all the people today? Everyone seems to be in a lousy mood…first Fei Gor (Fei glared at him) and now San Gor…(got another whack from Gigi)

Lunchtime at Chez Maman…
Chi San: Quin, over here.

Quin: Hi, Chi San. Have you ordered lunch yet? I’m starving!

Chi San: (Laughing) You’re always hungry, just like Fei said! (Realized his slip) Whoops, I mean, I’m sorry…

Quin: (Looked down at her hands) It’s ok. This place hadn’t changed much, has it?

Chi San: Yeah. After all, this place’s original designer was Tong Sum.

Quin: When are you going to visit Tong Sum? I would want to go with you. I haven’t visited her in 2 years.

Chi San: You’re welcome to join me. I visit her every Saturday and Sunday.

Quin: I’ll join you next weekend.

From the corner of the restaurant, someone was looking for Chi San. Fei stopped and saw Chi San. With a woman. She looks familiar from the back. I wonder who she is? Fei thought idly. The woman turned around to retrieve a fallen object. Fei felt the ground dropped beneath him. His world started spinning. He couldn’t believe his eyes. Kwan!?!?! When did she come back? Why didn’t Chi San tell me? Oh my God. Shall I talk to her? No, I can’t. I need to recollect my thoughts. I need to think! Fei immediately dashed to his car. He left a message on Chi San’s cell phone, asking for half a day off. He drove to his secret hideaway. Bursting into the apartment, he dropped onto the sofa and buried his face in his hands. For every night in the past 2 years, he had dreamt of her. And now, she was back, in flesh. How much longer can I deny my love for her? It was already so hard when she wasn’t here. But now, she’s back. Ching Ching’s face flashed in his mind. Ching Ching. I don’t love her, not the way I love Kwan. But how can I abandon her? I owe her so much. But don’t I owe Kwan, too? Don’t I owe it to myself to pick the woman I wanted to be with? Fei was never as confused as he was now. Seeing Quin made everything came back. Make himself happy and confessed his love for Quin, or make Ching Ching happy by pretending nothing happened? Fei shut his eyes. He couldn’t think clearly. All he knew that Quin was back, and he still loves her. Fei stood up. He needed to see her.

After lunch…
Quin returned to her office. She stopped by Janie’s desk.
Quin: Any messages?

Janie: No, but you have a visitor, Dr.Mo. He’s waiting for you inside.

Quin: Thanks.
(She entered her office. And standing there was the last man she wanted to see. She felt the ground sway beneath her.)

Fei: Kwan.

Quin: Fei!?!? How did you know I was here?

Fei: (Smiling crookedly) I saw you with Chi San in Chez Maman. And since our station is getting a new physcologist, I just figured things out. Oh Kwan…I’ve missed you so much. Why didn’t you contact me?
(Fei reached out to hug her. Without thinking, Quin returned the hug. The feeling was so right. She felt so safe. She was with him, the man she loves, and nothing else mattered. Fei closed his eyes as his love for Quin swept over him. I love you so much. Don’t leave me again. Quin suddenly remembered Ching Ching. She pushed him away.)

Quin: Fei, don’t. Think of Ching Ching.

Fei: I’m sorry, Kwan. It’s just that, seeing you again…

Quin: Nothing has changed. Ching Ching is waiting for you. Please leave, Fei. I...I’m not prepared to talk to you, to face you. Please leave now.

Fei could only leave the office.

That night…
Fei entered his home tiredly. Ching Ching flung her arms around him.

Ching Ching: Fei! Where’ve you been? I tried to call you but I cannot get through.

Fei: Sorry, I was working.

Ching Ching: Are you all right?

Fei: I’m fine.

Ching Ching: Are you sure? You don’t look too good. What about if I…

Fei: Ching Ching, I’m FINE. Leave me alone, please.

Ching Ching: (getting mad) If that’s the way you want it…what is wrong with you, Fei? In these 2 years, you rarely hug me or kiss me. You don’t even talk to me much. Don’t you love me? Why are you behaving like this? It is as if my boyfriend’s heart wasn’t with me, just an empty physical body. Don’t you pretend with me anymore. It’s that woman, isn’t it?

Fei: (Looking up tiredly) Ching Ching, please. I’m not in the mood to fight with you.

Ching Ching: I’m not stopping until I resolve this. If you don’t love me, then why don’t you just leave and go back to that woman?

Fei: (Mechanically) Her name is Mo Chiu Kwan. And I do love you. She’s in the past. I am going to be responsible for you and take care of you. Don’t you contradict that.

Ching Ching: (Boiling mad) Tsui Fei, you must be mad to speak like this. You are acting like as if I’m just a piece of assignment you need to complete. Listen to yourself! You’re speaking like a robot! All I’ve done for you, isn’t it enough? What more do you want? What has that woman got that I don’t? Don’t I mean anything to you anymore? You think I don’t know what you’re thinking? (She bent down to retrieve a box of letters from under the table and threw the letters at him) Here! Every letter you wrote to her. 567 letters all together.

Fei: (stared at Ching Ching angrily) You went through my things?

Ching Ching: (suddenly realized what she has revealed) I was…looking for…aspirin. I had a…headache…
(Her words sounded totally lame, even to herself.)

Fei: Those are private letters! You have no business or whatsoever in going through MY things. I can’t believe you. How can you sink so low?

Ching Ching: I couldn’t believe myself either. Living with a man who loves another for 2 long years. But I couldn’t leave you. I love you too much. I need you. (Began crying) Please don’t leave me Fei. Please…try to forget that woman. I cannot lose you. I can’t. (Threw her arms around Fei) Quin is a bright and educated girl. I’m a cripple. You’re all I have left. Please don’t leave me.

Fei remembered what he promised Quin 2 years ago in the hospital. Deep in his heart, he knew that Quin would never come back to him. She would never do that. She would never hurt Ching Ching. Pain enveloped Fei’s heart. He hesitantly put his arms around Ching Ching.

Fei: I won’t leave you. I will always be with you.

Now that Fei and Quin had seen each other face to face, what will happen? Man continued her journey back to Hong Kong. Will her memories return to haunt her?
