John: Not a chance, Captain America. I don’t plan to hang around here, anyway.
John: Come one more step closer and Quin dies faster than I’ve planned.
Suddenly, Korean and Hoi took a leap from behind John. They wrestled John as Quin scrambled away. She fled to safety, right in Fei’s arms. Chi San lept forward, and Gigi quickly radioed for back up. Gigi gently took Quin away, and Fei quickly went to help his team. Although it was Korean, Fei, Hoi and Chi San against John, they were fighting to hold him under control. John’s insanity and anger gave him extra strength. John lashed out here and there, and the four policemen suffered a lot of punches. But it was all over, when Korean and Hoi had him pinned to the ground.
Fei: You bastard.
Chi San: Hoi, handcuff him and take him back to the station.
Hoi: Yes, sir.
Hoi pulled out his handcuffs. John, a defeated man, watched as Fei walked away towards Quin. Anger shot through him, hot and boiling. He shoved Hoi aside with superhuman strength and grabbed his gun from the ground. Wildly, he swerved and aimed it at Fei.
John: (yelling) Tsui Fei! Kiss the world goodbye!
Hoi: San Gor!
Chi San: John Wang! Stop right there!
Korean overcame initial shock and sprang forward. But it was too late. BANG! The gun went off ominiously. Everyone stood still with shock.
Quin: Fei! No!
Quin sprang forward, shoving Fei aside. But she wasn’t quick enough to escape the bullet itself. Quin let out a cry of pain as the bullet found its target. Gasping, Quin fell to the ground in pain, her head hitting the ground with a dull thud.
Fei: (in horror) Kwan!
Gigi: Miss Mo!
Chi San: Quin!
Fei rushed to Quin’s side. She was bleeding badly from a bullet wound in her back. She was having trouble breathing as well.
Fei: Radio an ambulance! Quickly! Kwan, you’re going to be okay.
Quin: (in pain) Fei…I…
Fei: (hugged Quin to him, tears streaming down his cheeks) Shh…don’t talk. Save your strength. You’re going to be all right.
Quin: If…any…anything happened…to…me…don’t…don’t…blame…yourself…
Fei: Kwan…
Quin: I…never..wa…want…to see…you…hu..hurt…
Quin: I…also…want…to tell you…in…case…I don’t…ha…have the…chance…
Fei: Don’t talk like that. Please…
Quin: I…I…ne…never…stopped…love…loving you.
Fei: Kwan! No! Don’t leave me…don’t leave me…
A paramedic gently pushed Fei away as two other paramedics lifted Quin up and strapped her to a stretcher.
Fei: No! Don’t take her away from me!
Fei fell to ground, sobbing. He never felt so helpless in his life. Quin was in mortal danger, and he couldn’t do anything. Chi San kneeled down next to him, his hand on Fei’s shoulder. He, also, bent his head in sorrow. Quin was a true friend to him.
Meanwhile, Korean neared the paramedic.
Korean: (quietly) How does it look?
Paramedic: (looking at Korean briefly) Very bad. Severe bullet wound, excessive blood loss, head concussion…I think we are looking at a D.O.A. (calling to his co-workers) She’s loaded. Get her to the hospital, pronto!
D.O.A. Dead On Arrival. Korean felt all air left his lungs. Please, God. Don’t let Miss Mo die. She’s such a good person. She doesn’t deserve this. Suddenly, rain began to fell heavily. Korean looked behind him and saw Chi San trying to drag Fei out of the rain, but Fei was simply ignoring him. Korean sighed. What a perfect timing for the perfect weather, he thought sarcastically.
A rain-soaked Fei was sitting outside the emergency room, his head in his hands.
Korean: Fei Gor, what about if I get you a change of clothes? You’re soaked.
Hoi: Fei Gor, take my jacket. You’ll catch a cold if you don’t put on something dry.
Gigi: Here, Fei Gor. Have a sandwich. You haven’t eaten anything since this morning.
Chi San: Fei, at least have something hot to drink.
Man: (frantically) How’s Quin? Oh, God, don’t let anything happen to her…
Chi San: (swallowing hard) She’s still inside. The doctors said…she…might not make it.
Fei: (fiercely) Don’t you dare say that, Kong Chi San! She’s going to be okay. She IS going to be okay. (his voice dropping into a whisper) She’s got to be okay.
Kit: How is big sister doing?
Chi San: Still inside.
Kit: Biu Yee and Dad cannot be contacted. They are camping in the mountains.
No one bothered to make any comments. Kit sighed and glanced towards the operating room. Please, big sister. You have to stay strong. Don’t give up. Never give up. You told me that, remember? The tension outside the operating room crackled. Everyone was scared and worried. Suddenly, the dreaded light went off. The doors opened. A doctor in operating garments stepped out. Everyone immediately accosted the doctor.
Fei: (shaking the doctor) How is she?
Chi San: Is she okay?
Man: Please…you have to save her…
Korean: Miss Mo is all right, isn’t she?
Kit: I…
Doctor: Who are the immediate family members of Mo Chiu Kwan?
Kit: I’m her brother.
Doctor: Your sister had severe artery damage, but we managed to repair the damage. However, excessive blood loss left her extremely weak. And she also suffered a head concussion. I’m sorry, but as of now, she’s in a coma.
Fei: Coma!?! What do you mean, coma?! What kind of doctor are you? How…
Chi San: Fei, calm down, please!
Kit: (urgently) When will she wake up?
Doctor: It all depends on the patient herself. It might be one day or it might be ten years. If her will to life is strong, she will wake up quicker. She will be, of course, stationed in the Intensive-Care Unit. One more question. Which one of you is Fei?
Fei: (swallowing his tears) I am.
Doctor: Miss Mo regained consciousness for two seconds and called your name. I just thought you might like to know that.
(Fei slumped down in despair. Quin was in a coma. If it weren’t because of him, she wouldn’t be lying there in a coma. She did everything she could for him. He only brought her pain and unhappiness. Why am I so useless?)
Chi San: Fei, the doctor has given his permission for you to visit Quin.
Fei jumped up and sprinted towards the ICU like a madman. Seconds later, he burst in through Quin’s hospital room door. Quin was lying on the bed, all sorts of tubes and machines hooked onto her. She looked pale and frail. Fei approached her slowly. Seeing her in this condition was like knifes stabbing at his heart. Sitting down on the chair by her bed, Fei took Quin’s hand in his.
Fei: Kwan, you said that you never stopped loving me. I never stopped loving you as well. Ever since we seperated, there is never a day I didn’t think of you. It has always been you all along in my heart. Please wake up. I cannot lose you.
Fei: (in a whisper) Please wake up. I need you. I need you so much.
Chi San: Wang Kei-Chung, I am giving you a last chance to surrender.
(Chi San took a step forward.)
(He punched John once in the face and walked away, over to Quin’s side. Chi San was about to reprimand him, but stopped. What the heck. He deserves that punch.)
(Quin choked. Fei shook his head, tears flowing.)
(Quin gasped, and blood streamed out from her nose.)
(Quin reached out to touch Fei’s face. Gripping her hand, Fei’s tears continue to flow.)
(Quin gasped again, and lost consciousness.)
(Fei ignored him.)
(Fei ignored him.)
(Fei looked up, and looked down again. Gigi was being ignored as well. Chi San handed Fei a cup of hot coffee from the vending machine.)
(Fei also ignored Chi San. He continued to stare at the operating room, his lips moving in a silent prayer. All four of them shook their heads and sighed. They continue to wait determinedly. Man came running in.)
(He repeated his sentence like a prayer. Man collapsed on the bench and stared at the hospital walls. She felt too numb even to cry. Kit and Yuk arrived later.)
(Chi San don’t have the strength for long sentences anymore. He just shook his head tiredly.)
(The doctor held up a hand, signaling them to quiet down.)
(Fei lifted Quin’s hand to his lips.)
(Quin remained motionless. Gripping Quin’s hand, Fei continue to sit by Quin’s bedside. Outside the window, the rain continued to pour relentlessly.)
When will Quin wake up? And if she does wake up, is everything going to be fine with Fei and her? Or is there another dark cloud ahead? And what about Ching Ching?
