Quin: (in a whisper) No, oh my God, no…
John: Hello, Quin. You’re looking lovelier than ever.
Quin: (struggling against her ropes) What do you want from me, John?
John: (calmly lighting a cigaratte) I said that I’ll be back for you, Quin. I always keep my promises. (smiling evilly)
Note from author: I’ll be making an addition to my characters. Yup, Quin’s kidnapper. And assuming the role will be one of my favorite, most-hated on-screen villians: Marco Ngai Chun Kit. Please note that he has NO CONNECTION to do with the character Alex in of the cases of DIF4. Confused? Just e-mail me! On with the story…
At a deserted area…
Quin blinked as the blindfold was removed from her face. Standing there looking at her was John Wang, the person she dreaded seeing most.
Canada, one and three quarter years ago…
Quin: Here, take back your ring, John.
John: Why? I thought we are to be married.
Quin: You’re a nice man, John. I’m sorry; I made a hasty decision agreeing to marry you. But I’ve thought over it clearly and rationally. I am not ready.
John: I can wait! (desperation lighted in his eyes) You know how much I love you, Quin.
Quin: I’m sorry. I cannot…
John: (his expression darkened) Is there another man?
Quin looked at him in shock. He was right on target. She knew that she couldn’t marry John when she hadn’t erased Fei from her mind.
Quin: (took a deep breath) Yes. In Hong Kong. My ex-fiance. We were in love, but under circumstances, we could never be together, but I couldn’t forget him…
John: You can start afresh with me! I don’t mind! I only wanted to be with you!
Quin: John, please don’t make this any harder on me. I’m sincerely sorry. One day, you’ll find a girl much nicer than me, I promised…
John: Who is he?
Quin: John…
John: WHO IS HE?!?!
Quin: It’s none of your business. Good-bye, John. I think it’ll be the best if we don’t see each other anymore.
*TWO MONTHS LATER*
Lawyer: John Wang Kei-Chung, by the order of the municipal court of Toronto, I hereby serve you with this order of protection. Effective immediately, you are ordered not to come within three hundred yards of Miss Quin Mo Chiu Kwan. It is illegal for you to telephone her. It is illegal for you to send correspondence to her, either through the Canadian postal service or other delivery systems, by telegram or via electronic mail. Should you violate the following court order, you will be subject to imprisonment or fines for contempt of court. That would mean at least six months in prison or a mandatory stay in an insane asylum until a board of psychiatrists deems you well enough to return to the rest of the society. Do you understand?
John: (struggling against two police officers) Quin, I can’t believe you. You got a court restraining order.
Quin: I’m sorry, John. But if this is the only way to stop you from stalking me, and…
(Quin swallowed nervously as she thought of the two months, constantly stalked and bothered by John. She hadn’t had a peace of mind.)
Quin: …and leaving me alone so be it. Don’t ever bother me again. I don’t ever want to see you again.
Lawyer: (leaning towards John and repeating menacingly) Do you, John Wang Kei-Chung, understand?
(John threw the lawyer a look of resentment.)
John: (shouting) You think you can get rid of me this easily? Think again, Quin. I’ll be back…this is a promise! I’ll be back…for you…
Quin shuddered with revulsion and walked again. She couldn’t believe she once considered that she could start over with this deranged man. She was so distracted and scared; she didn’t see her organizer dropped. When Quin was a distance away, the police officers released John.
Lawyer: Remember, Mr.Wang. Go against the court order, and you will only have yourself to blame.
Police officer: (smirking) Yeah, the loony bin isn't a nice place.
(The lawyer and police officers cracked up laughing.)
John glared at them as they walked away, still laughing. Then he slowly walked forward to pick up the tiny organizer. He flipped open the cover. He then smiled wickedly.
John: Well, well. What do you know.
(He extracted a picture of Quin and another man, hugging.)
John: Must be the famous ex-fiance, huh?
He turned over the picture and saw an inscription.
Dearest Kwan,
May our love last forever and may I will always be in your heart!
Love
Fei
There was another picture, the same man wearing a Hong Kong police officer’s uniform. The words scribbled at the back simply said:
Tsui Fei
Graduation 1995
John: (chuckling) So, Tsui Fei here is a policeman. This just makes everything much more interesting…This little picture here will help me to find out EVERYTHING I needed to know…
Quin: (terrified) What are you going to do?
John: Quin, Quin, curious as always. You will see for yourself.
Fei rushed up to the apartment like a mad man. He burst into Quin’s apartment. Uniformed police officers and members of his team were all over the place.
Fei: San Gor! What happened? My God, what happened to Kwan?
Chi San: She was gone from her room. The kidnapping was calculated to have taken place at abour 4.35. I…
Fei: (agitated) I don’t want to hear all this rubbish! Who did this?
Chi San: (sharply) Fei! Calm yourself! If you continue to be in such a state, I will have no choice but order you to take a long holiday! You are a police officer! How can I expect you to do a good job if you’re so emotional?
(Fei sank down on the floor, his head in his hands. Chi San’s face softened.)
Chi San: Fei. I know you are worried. I am, too. But you have to be strong. Quin needs you more than ever now. You have to keep a clear head and save her.
(Chi San remembered the note in his pocket. He quickly drew it out from the evidence bag. He handed it to Fei.)
Chi San: This was found in Quin’s room. Read it, and I hope you can shed some light into this case.
(Fei made a grab for the note, but Chi San handed him a pair of rubber gloves. Fei donned on the gloves and snatched the note. It was a short one.)
Tsui Fei, if I can’t have her, neither will you.
Fei: I don’t understand. It makes no sense at all.
(He reread the note.)
Chi San: It sounds like what a love-rival might have sent. Could it be…
Fei: San Gor! You have contact with Kwan all the while she was in Canada. Can you shed some light on this mystery?
Chi San: Quin didn’t tell me her personal matters. I don’t know.
Fei: (suddenly) Man! Bring Man back! She must know! She and Kwan are very close friends.
Chi San: Good idea.
(He quickly punched a number into his cellphone.)
Chi San: Man, you better return home quickly. I’m afraid there’s bad news…
Later…
Chi San: Man, please stop crying.
Man: (in between sobs) It was all my fault. Why did I leave her alone? I shouldn’t have left her alone.
Fei: (grabbing Man by the shoulders) Cut it out with your crying! Do you know anything about this or not!?! Come on, think! What had Kwan told you over the past two years!?!
Chi San: (warningly) Fei, contain yourself!
Fei: (releasing Man) Sorry.
Chi San: (gently) Man, please. This is very, very important. Do you know anything, anything at all about Quin’s love life while she was in Canada?
Man: (sobs slowly subsiding) I…I…she…dated a few…I remembered!
(Man suddenly hopped up like a Jack in the Box. Fei looked up hopefully. Finally, a clue! )
Man: There was a man, a man that proposed to Quin, but Quin rejected him. He was stalking her, and terrorizing her. Quin had to get a court restraining order to keep him away from her. It happened not long ago. Only about 2 to 3 months ago. After that, Quin returned to Hong Kong.
Fei was shocked. He had no idea this happened. Why, oh why, did I let her go in the first place? He quickly banished all thoughts. He was on duty. He cannot fall apart…not now.
Fei: (urgently) Who was this man?
Man: (thinking hard) I couldn’t remember his name. I…wait! If I could find Quin’s old letters…
(Fei jumped up.)
Fei: What are you waiting for? Go get the letters now! (caught Chi San’s warning look) I mean, get the letters, P-L-E-A-S-E.
Man rumaged through a large box in her room. She finally pulled out a fistful of letters. She thumbed rapidly through the letters. She picked out 4 letters.
Man: Should be one of these.
(She removed the letters and began reading. Moments later…)
Man: I’ve got it! Listen…
“It was so scary, Man. He was violent, and possibly crazy. And to think I once thought he will help me get over Fei…” Man stopped reading. Everyone looked at Fei uncomfortably. His face remained emotionless, but his eyes glistened with moisture. Man looked at Chi San. Chi San nodded, indicating she can continue. Man continued reading. “…I was so wrong. He looked so violent when I told him I could not marry him. I got so scared at night. I couldn’t sleep. I kept having a sensation of being watched. He said he’d be back for me, Man! What shall I do then? Man extracted another letter. “…only a court restraining order will keep John away from me. Am I overeacting? I don’t know. But I do feel safer now. “
Man: (muttering) John…
(She looked through the letters again. She pulled out a random letter and read it.)
Man: (triumphly) I’ve got it! His name is John Wang Kei-Chung. 29 years old, and he’s a businessman in Canada. But that’s basically all I know about him.
Chi San: (immediately started giving out orders) Korean, contact Canada’s police force and see if John Wang has any criminal record besides having that court order against him. Gigi, contact Canada’s Business Bereau and track him down. Hoi, continue searching for any evidence he might have left behind in the aparment. . (His eyes landed on Fei) Fei, go back to the station, logged onto the Net, and find out everything, and I mean EVERYTHING you can about John Wang Kei-Chung.
Fei: (nodded) Got it.
Fei sprinted out of the apartment. Kwan, don’t worry. I’ll save you. I won’t let anything happen to you. I won’t.
What will happen to Quin now? What deadly plans has John in stored for her? What does he want from Quin?
